Cynopsis: Classified Advantage
10.13.09
Good morning – it’s Tuesday, October 13 2009, and this is your weekly issue of Cyn opsis: Classified Advantage! This edition includes the top job listings in the Television, Media and Ad Agency markets, professional development advice from national experts, your Q & A’s with our experts, and a summary of executive moves among top companies.
What to do when unemployed
- Being unemployed should be treated like a job, meaning you should dedicate 8 hours a day, 5 days a week, addressing the situation.
- Check your unemployment benefits.
- Perfect your resumes. Have several resumes ready, each emphasizing different highlights of your career.
- Contact friends, neighbors, relatives, and people within your social and business networks. Get the word out, you need a job. Keep at this.
- Have cards made up with your name, profession and all contact information. Not exactly business cards, but “reminder cards” what you want people to know about you. That’s a different approach, and will help them remember you.
- Make a list of the most successful people you know who could be most helpful. Make appointments to meet with them and tell them about your situation. Do Not Ask Them For A Job. Ask them to suggest people they know who might be helpful in your search, and if they might contact them to help you get an appointment. If they’re too busy for that, might you use their name as a reference? If the guy has an opening, he’ll probably consider whether you’d be his solution.
- When you run into any of your business colleagues, ask them how work is going. When they ask you, tell them you are looking for a job and if they show any interest, give them a couple of reminder cards, in case they run into someone who could use a bright fellow like you.
- When you meet people you don’t know, ask them what business they’re in. Be attentive. When they ask you, tell them your profession and that you are looking for work. If they show any interest at all, give them your reminder card. And if they don’t show any interest, give them a couple of cards anyway. You never know.
- Practice and videotape mock interviews. Watch them, make notes, practice.
- Spend some time each day reading about your industry, keeping ahead of the curve. Read about your particular niche as well as the industry in general. Broaden your horizons to increase your chances of getting a job.
- Keep a list of companies that you would like to work for and check their sites each morning for new postings, and of course check industry job boards twice a day.
- Exercise daily, it will help with the stress and being in shape is always good.
If there’s any time left after all of the above, you might consider –
- Volunteering, it helps the organization; it’s good for the soul and not bad for the resume;
- Starting a blog, if you are a competent writer, about your industry, or an analysis about the struggle of being unemployed. If you don’t write well, forget this one;
- Learn a foreign language, since most Americans are monolingual it looks great on a resume and who knows, you might enjoy working in Paris or Rome;
- Learn a new skill that can be applied to a job outside your industry.

In the old days employers and headhunters looking for candidates made phone calls or sent emails. Now they are actively using LinkedIn and other social media sites to find candidates. This is a main source for professional resumes. Friends mention to their social media friends in tweets and updates they are looking for someone. Employers like referrals as “social proof” for a candidate.
So says Social Media Content Strategist Catherine Ventura who told me “in the back of every job seeker’s mind should be the idea that nothing you do online is purely social.” “If you are looking for work in the TV industry, look at the updates and tweets of people who work in the field. See what topics they are interested in. Just like you do at a cocktail party, don’t barge in, spend time listening and then use language that’s appropriate to the conversations you are joining.”
“Google yourself and see which social media sites come up,” says Ventura. “Look at your last 20 tweets and your last 20 Facebook and LinkedIn updates and whatever else comes up (your Amazon reviews for example).
See what you’re saying and how you’re saying it; what does your social media voice convey to people who don’t know you? Do you want to sound like a seasoned pro? A thought leader? A pragmatist? An innovator? An enthusiast? A team player? If you don’t sound the way you want, approach it like a screenwriter and start projecting the personality and level of professionalism you DO want to project.”
Ventura tells me that she sees the different sites as different sections of a resume. LinkedIn is the most important with professional history and recommendations. She suggests joining groups on LinkedIn, not so much for the postings as for the collage of badges that gives a picture of your interests at a glance.
“Facebook,” she says, “is used to best effect as indicating your outside interests, special skills, hobbies and who you are as a person.” You know that people do like to peek, especially if they are looking to hire you. So be sure that you have not said anything disrespectful about your employer!
Because social media is public, you should be conscious that people are meeting you this way, and the voice you use – even down to the adjectives – is the first impression you make. Just like a cocktail party.

Questions from our Readers
Answered by Michael Pollock
How do you know if your resume is good enough / presented right? I thought it looked good with a few friends & co workers to review. Yet when I submitted to those review boards, I got different responses, along with an offer for $ to re write. The job search has been slow so now I am re considering but not sure if I can trust those re write companies. I have heard good & bad.
The resume‘s job is to get you the interview. So all the reader knows is what she sees on the page. Your friends and co-workers already know you and anyway they won’t want to tell you if your resume is no good. I suggest you get a friend to pass it to someone smart who doesn’t know you and get their, more objective, opinion.
A senior manager told me just last month “I ‘m sorting through the 750 applications I got for one position. I’ve managed to find reasons to reject 744 applicants and narrowed it down to 6!” Put yourself in her place. Your resume has to tell her immediately right at the top how you are the one person who will solve her exact problem. Here’s a little exercise: delete all but the first four lines of your resume. Will this make a hirer feel “This person sounds amazing – I have to learn more”?
As to rewrite companies, my opinion is that the more of your resume you can write yourself in your own voice, to let your own specialness shine through, the more you will stand out in the crowded field. But before you decide, ask the rewrite guys to send you some samples. Then imagine they are in a pile of 750 resumes and decide whether or not you would put these candidates on your “Must meet” pile or not.
