Cynopsis: Classified Advantage
11.22.11
Good morning. It’s Tuesday, November 22, 2011, and this is your weekly issue of Cynopsis: Classified Advantage!
In last week’s edition, we had an HR professional describe his job and the candidates he sees on a daily basis. If what he says holds true for most of the candidates out there, what are we to infer from this information?
That most people are stupid? No.
That many are lazy and really don’t want a job? No.
That they are so set in their ways that they will not conform to the newer methods of personal marketing? Maybe at first, but when you are unemployed for a certain amount of time, most people are willing to embrace new ideas.
Perhaps they have given up. Unfortunately, that might be true for some, but certainly not the majority.
I think they’re mad. They are mad that they can walk into a job interview they are more than qualified for and never hear back from the company. This is unprecedented for most workers. Qualifications were once all you needed to get a good job. But now, you need more.
So listen to the gentleman who wrote last week’s column.
You’re not writing thank you notes?
You’re not ready for questions that put you in an uncomfortable position?
You haven’t researched the company or the industry?
You’re not asking about the hiring process?
You don’t know how to sell yourself with enthusiasm?
You haven’t looked into typical questions asked during an interview?
Your resumes aren’t in an easy to read format with three bullet points near the top that clearly demonstrates why you are THE PERSON for the job?
You have misspelled words on your resume or cover letter?
You don’t have a list of questions that will show your knowledge of the company and the industry?
Stop, before emailing me in anger, I know a lot of you are doing exactly what you are supposed to be doing and still are unemployed. But understand this, you are way ahead of a lot of other candidates out there, so hold on, your time is coming.
When I wrote a column about the 3 bullet point resume, I received over 75 resumes asking for my opinion. Less than ten had 3 bullet points, all the rest had more, one had 27.
I know it’s bad out there, and I don’t want to sound cruel, but if you don’t heed the advice from the Cynopsis writers, industry leaders and people who work in HR, then you’re not doing your job. And if you’re not doing your job, why should anyone hire you to do theirs?
Next Issue: The Death of a Document?
We are always on the look out for more Experts to advise our readers – if you’re a headhunter, job coach, career advisor, etc., and may be interested in contributing to this edition from time to time, please contact me at [email protected] .
You can’t be anymore inspired or motivated to change your job, rethink your career strategy or plot your next move as outlined in the new movie, “Horrible Bosses.” Okay so this may be an extreme way of dealing with a problem when it’s time to make a career change. But, hey desperate times, as they say, require desperate measures.
I’m not suggesting you hire a hit man (or wanna-be hit man) to take out your boss or any colleagues who might be getting in your way towards career advancement. However, when it comes time to really reflect on how miserable you might be, keep one thing in mind: any alternative starts to look good when you are stuck in the middle of working for a horrible boss.
And it might not be just your boss who is driving you insane. It might just be the quality or lack there of that makes you nuts, whether they pay you well for it or not. You might as well start planning your next move because unless you begin to talk yourself out of all the reasons why you should not be making a change, you will be stuck contemplating the very things these three characters did in the movie and find yourself in deeper trouble in the long run.
Getting out of your own way in times of trouble takes little more than a true act of God in some circumstances. Whether you are good at making up excuses as to why you should hang on, promise of a promotion, maybe you have college tuition to pay off, or a whole host of other reasons why you have to stay, sucking it up when you just want to shoot yourself (or your boss) instead.
It’s time to think again. You do have choices. But the first choice you have after you’re done fantasizing about all the ways you can maneuver your way out of your dead-end job and assume your boss’s position, would be to quit or find another job before it’s too late.
You can talk yourself in or out of most anything. “Oh, the economy is tight so I better stay put,” or, “I really like my job and wish my boss would leave instead,” to, “I can’t leave, I have no place to go!” Throwing yourself into a panic will not help you navigate your way out of your weird predicament any quicker or easier.
Make sure you have a few elements in place before contemplating whether you can live with or without your horrible boss before you make a move. This list of questions you should ask yourself can certainly start you thinking whether it’s worth the wait or not:
- Do you really hate walking in to the office in the morning?
- Was the last project you worked on way below your pay grade?
- Do you cringe when you are asked to a meeting with your peers/colleagues?
- Would you care if you were offered a job for more work and no increase in pay?
- Do you mind if you are asked to give up on personal commitments in order to stay late when you know it’s not going to get you any further ahead in the end?
- Do you believe you are being humiliated, harassed or compromised and are putting up with it just because you need the job?
- How do you describe your job to your friends and family? Do you sound happy?
- When was the last time anyone at work paid you a compliment about your work or you felt appreciated?
- Does your boss routinely berate you in front of your peers for no reason?
- And finally, when you look in the mirror do you like what you see and how you feel about the work you are doing?
If you can answer, “yes” to any or most of these questions then it’s time to seriously consider how your horrible boss and your horrible career are making you feel about yourself. There is no use in putting off the inevitable. If you are relating to most of these questions then it’s time to hit the road and look for another job with a more rewarding career before you wind up like the horrible boss you truly hate.
Lisa Kaye, Founder & CEO, www.greenlightjobs.com a media and entertainment recruitment job board and career center has over 20 years human resources experience in the industry having worked for E! Networks, ABC/Disney, Lifetime, Pixar, Live Nation and most recently consulting with The Oprah Winfrey Network.
Are there any new sites, other than Cynopsis Classified Advantage, that are reliable as far as having true postings that weren’t filled weeks ago? All the big sites seem to use this practice and it is very frustrating.
Yes, there are many, many niche job board/posting sites which cater to job seekers at all levels from entry to the seasoned professionals. For a comprehensive list of niche job sites you can do a Google search based on the industry or profession you are seeking to work in and see what comes up.
The misconception with outdated job postings that appear to be weeks or months old is that many search engines or job sites these days “scrape” postings across many companies on regular intervals. What this means is that not all job sites include companies that directly post and take down postings once they’ve expired (like the old days!).
With automation comes improvement in the way you can search and apply to jobs across many companies. However, unless an individual from the company takes down a posting on their company site, or includes a posting expiration date (standard is 30 days), then job sites that scrape cannot determine when a job is still considered active or filled as a result.
It’s not that job sites are deliberately out to deceive the job seeker. It’s just that technology is as good as the person on the other end who updates the information-remember, garbage in-garbage out. So the best thing to do when you come across a job you are interested in applying to that you found on a job board is to cross check the job with the company site to make sure the link from the job board is active and the job is still posted on the company’s career page.
I understand how frustrating it is to research jobs that appear to be weeks or months old but the good news is that there are many new jobs being posted everyday. Always make sure you post through the job board AND directly on the company job site as well to ensure your resume gets directly to the recruiter.
Some job sites may only include listings and are not directly linked to the company career site. And also, don’t pay for sites that require you to register and pay in order to apply-those are not reliable and or accurate and you can always apply to any job for free by going directly to the company site.
As an older person, on my resume, do I concentrate on my experience using dates or do I just try to gloss over it by leaving out some of my experience, even though relevant and don’t use any dates?
My personal belief as someone who has more than 20 years experience is that you don’t need to list all of the dates, jobs and companies you’ve worked for since 1980! It’s likely that most people who are reading your resume today weren’t even born then!
I believe if you’ve got more than 20 years experience in any one profession good for you. Most companies, when they are looking to hire senior level executives (and I don’t mean as in age), are looking for between 10-15 years work experience. If your experience exceeds this range, then there is no reason to “cap” it off at 20 years-because in reality they will understand that you have the experience and you don’t need to list every single thing you did from the time you started working even if it is relevant.
If you are applying for an VP job today for instance, do you really think the company is interested in knowing what you did as a manager 20 years ago? Stick to what is most relevant in experience and in the level of position you’ve held and the company’s that you’ve worked in and under-emphasize your laundry list of employment dates as a focal point on your resume.
I’m not suggesting you delete dates of employment. I just don’t believe it’s particularly relevant if you’ve got the requisite number of years to qualify you for the job you are applying for to list all your dates of employment from the time you graduated college or even high school (which sadly I’ve seen!).
Remember, it’s always good to know your audience and these days, the crowd is getting younger every day! Stick to emphasizing your qualifications based on the number of years they are looking as listed in the job posting and you can’t go wrong. Sometime too much is well, too much.
