Cynopsis: Sports
11.19.13

Good morning. It’s Tuesday, November 19, 2013, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.

Next year’s broadcasts of the 2014 NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship Final Four will get a shakeup. Officials at Turner Sports say that, for the first time in the event’s 75-year history, the national semifinals will be carried live by three networks – TBS, TNT and truTV  simultaneously with each offering a distinct POV. In addition to traditional game coverage on TBS, which represents the first time in history the national semifinal games will be televised by a cable network, two complementary presentations will also air on TNT and truTV, with each offering coverage tailored specifically to one of the teams competing in each game with separate commentary and additional camera angles. CBS will then offer the championship game exclusively on April 7.

On the Air

NBC continues to run up the score with Sunday Night Football, with coverage of the Denver victory over the Chiefs earning a 16.6 overnight rating/27 share, according to Nielsen. Those numbers would mark the best primetime overnight for a November game in 17 years as well as a 36% spike over last season’s Week 11 SNF matchup. The game’s rating also ties for second this season behind the 17.3 for Manning’s return to Indianapolis on October 20. On the local front, the game’s 52.0/75 rating in Denver was the highest for a primetime game in 27 years, while the 51.5/72 rating in Kansas City marked the best in a decade.

A quartet of the NHL, NHLPA, NBCSN and CBC are aligning to produce upcoming series NHL Revealed: A Season Like No Other. The seven-part series will showcase more than two dozen of the League’s top stars as they prepare for and participate in regular-season games, including the four 2014 Coors Light NHL Stadium Series games, the Tim Hortons NHL Heritage Classic as well as Sochi. The series debuts on NBCSN on Jan. 22 and on CBC on Jan. 23 and is produced by Toronto-based Bristow Global Media Inc. and its principal, Julie Bristow with Ross Greenburg as an executive producer on behalf of the NHL. The series will feature players from the New York Rangers, New Jersey Devils, New York Islanders, Chicago Blackhawks, Pittsburgh Penguins, Anaheim Ducks and Los Angeles Kings.

Six-time NASCAR Champion Jimmie Johnson is once again set to make history, this time as the first athlete to guest host SportsCenter. Johnson’s new “gig” will take place today at 6p where he will join regular anchors John Anderson and Lindsay Czarniak. He joins actors Billy Crystal and Ken Jeong as the only other celebrity guest hosts in the show’s 34-year history. Johnson will also appear on LIVE with Kelly and Michael tomorrow morning to discuss winning his sixth NASCAR Sprint Cup Series title over the weekend.

CBS Sports has announced that its selection for the SEC on CBS broadcast on Saturday, Nov. 30 will feature Alabama and Auburn in the Iron Bowl. The action begins at 3:30p with the winner set to represent the SEC West in the SEC Championship game on Saturday, December 7 on CBS. Verne Lundquist, Gary Danielson and reporter Tracy Wolfson call the contest from Jordan-Hare Stadium in Auburn, Ala.

FOX Sports announced its selections for games on Saturday, Nov. 23, on FOX and FOX Sports 1, which will be anchored by Arizona State/UCLA at 7p on FOX. FOX Sports’ lead college football broadcast team of Gus Johnson, Charles Davis and Kristina Pink will call live from the Rose Bowl. Game action on FOX Sports 1 starts at noon with Oklahoma/Kansas State, followed by Cal/Stanford at 4p. Coverage wraps up with Kansas/Iowa State at 8p.

Speaking of FOX, the network announced plans for the NFL on FOX to give thanks this Thanksgiving by showing appreciation to the military with a visit to Fort Irwin National Training Center in Fort Irwin, Calif. Jay Glazer, Eddie George, the FOX Sports Girls from the Arizona, San Diego and West regions and FOX Sports robot Cleatus will be on hand for live segments during the FOX NFL SUNDAY special edition pregame show and game broadcast on Thursday, Nov. 28 at 11:30a.

In a move to recognize the 50th Anniversary of John F. Kennedy’s assassination, NFL Network, NFL.com, and NFL Films are collaborating to produce a multi-part series titled The Untold NFL History of That Day in Dallas. Starting Wednesday on NFL.com/JFK and continuing through Sunday on NFL Network, NFL Media will deliver five features centered around the events of November 22-24, 1963 and their connection with the NFL. Subjects will include: NFL Commissioner Pete Rozelle’s Decision to Play; The Kennedys: The First Family of Football; and Roger Staubach’s Lost Life Magazine Cover.

NBC10 Philadelphia and Comcast SportsNet Philadelphia announced a new and expansive news programming alliance designed to deliver more sports coverage within more than 700 NBC10 newscasts throughout the year. Beginning in January, Comcast SportsNet Philadelphia’s sports, news and information will power NBC10’s sports reports every day. The partnership will include daily sports coverage, Olympics coverage, online and digital collaborations as well as sports special programming.
