Sundance Channel premiered the first episode of its second season of Girls Who Like Boys Who Like Boys on Twitter yesterday, marking one of the first times a network has leveraged Twitter to showcase a full episode of a TV show. The episode streamed on Twitvid. Sundance also plans to offer the new episode on Facebook this week, potentially reaching the show’s 237,000 Facebook fans, as well as on Hulu and PerezHilton.com. The episode debuts on air on Friday Nov. 18. Sundance said it premiered the episode on Twitter because of the increasing role social media plays in how TV viewers find out about shows. What’s more, Sundance struck a deal with Netflix for the online streaming service to offer season one starting Nov. 15 for any fans who may want to catch up.
Nickelodeon is expanding its reach with moms with the launch of NickMom.com, a blog featuring humorous stories, photos and polls that’s slated to expand soon to include video, social media and editorial content next year. Nickelodeon said it will then launch Nickmom in the fourth quarter of 2012 as a prime-time, ad-supported TV block on Nick Jr. from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. ET.
Barry Diller’s Internet conglomerate IAC has jumped into the location-based business with its new service Crowded Room, designed to connect users who have similar tastes and frequent similar establishments. The service is designed to make “socializing, networking and dating easier by digitally identifying common bonds,” the company said. Crowded Room is aiming to compete in the location-based services business by tapping into the potential of deeper connections between people, rather than simple check-ins into establishments or stores. The service was developed inside of IAC and is available for Android and Apple phones.
Social media platform service Vitrue launched a new Twitter moderation product, which integrates Klout into the service to let marketers respond to influencers in their Twitter stream based on their Klout score and profile.
~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~
Global marketing agency LBi International N.V. acquired social media and marketing agency Mr. Youth, in a deal valued at between $40 million to $50 million. Mr Youth focuses on branding through social media, experiences and word-of-mouth marketing to reach younger consumers.
The 45th Annual CMA Awards topped the social charts last week, generating the most social buzz in terms of comments and uniques for the week ending Nov. 13, according to social tracking service Social Guide. It was followed by The Bad Girls Club and the X Factor.
Logitech has jettisoned the Google TV set-top box from its product lineup, saying consumers aren’t yet ready for the product, according to several reports. Sales of the Logitech’s Revue set-top box featuring Google TV have been sluggish for the last year, and Logitech dropped the price from $300 to $99.
Entertainment discovery service Rovi inked a multi-year licensing deal for DivX technology with Shenzhen Jiuzhou Electric to integrate the DivX HD technology into its set-top boxes for sale in 2012, starting in Europe.
Sam’s Club is gearing up to launch a tablet app for iPads, the company announced at the recent ad:tech digital marketing show in New York. The app will roll out in a few weeks and will enable Sam’s Club shopping online, effectively bringing the Sam’s Club experience to tablets, the company said. Also at ad:tech, an Ogilvy executive noted that about 50% of tablet users are turning to the device for commerce. That’s impacting how marketers and agencies are developing tablet strategies for brands.

TV technology firm ActiveVideo Networks named Brian Sereda Chief Financial Officer. Most recently, he served as President of Finance and CFO of Virage Logic and has a background in software, semiconductors, networking equipment and CE devices.
Hearst Digital Media hired Orchid Burnside as Director of Digital Operations. She’s already begun in her new role, and she leads and coordinates sales operations and client services across all of HDM’s online properties. She joins from BET Networks.
