Good morning, it’s Tuesday, November 13, 2007 and this is your first early morning digital briefing. 

Lifetime relaunched its female-focused web portal pulling content from a number of partners including Hearst Digital, About.com, RealArcade, RevolutionHealth.com and Glam Media – regarded the hottest vertical network of sites in the women’s category. MyLifetime.com will offer continually refreshed content across a number of categories taking the form of casual games, community features and broadband programming. In addition to streaming Lifetime originals such as American Psychic Challenge, the site is planning seven new made-for-the web series this year and at least 16 series next year such as Gift Intervention from The Daily Show co-creator Lizz Winstead. Freeing up the rights to stream top hit Army Wives is also in the works, according to Dan Suratt, EVP/Digital Media for Lifetime.
 

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

 
MTV Networks will launch a new password-protected affiliate relations site on Wednesday optimized for today’s rich media needs. MTVN.com will incorporate feedback from the company’s more than 10,000 affiliates and feature new user-friendly functionalities including targeted promotions and spots sections, an enhanced programming section and a planned area for wireless clients offering mobile-based programming, content and applications.
 
A&E Television
teamed with Ascent Media to build a new centrally-managed repository for its digital media assets. The file-based system will enable AETN networks to digitize, catalogue and archive all content scheduled to air on the company’s standard def and high-def networks, retrievable for post-production work, creation of on-air promos and distribution to alternative platforms.
 
National Geographic Global Media announced the creation of a new Digital Studio consolidating several existing consumer media content and distribution operations. Digital Studio will produce the PBS show Wild Chronicles, house the Nat Geo Short-Form Video Group – which produces content for NationalGeographic.com and other platform – as well as produce programming for Nat Geo Music. Mark Bauman, named SVP, will head the unit, reporting to Michael Rosenfeld, President of Nat Geo Television.
 
IFC.com began streaming daily sketches from the first season of The Whitest Kids U’ Know, leading up to the premiere of the comedy’s second season early next year.
 
TVGuide signed syndication agreements with Variety, the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, the Minneapolis Star-Tribune and Voxtant, licensing its online program listings grid and additional editorial and video content.
 
The NHL is launching a series of interactive widgets powered by Gydgets built to pull live content from NHL.com to social networking sites or blogs. The widgets can provide breaking news, schedule info and links to purchase tickets.
 

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~
 

Google is in talks with American Idol creator Simon Fuller to form a new joint venture that “could change the way TV is watched over the internet,” according to UK paper The Guardian. There are few details in the piece, though, and reality/internet projects such as AOL’s Gold Rush venture with Mark Burnett have met with mixed success at best thus far. Mr. Fuller will also receive the Producers Guild of America’s 2008 Visionary Award for his efforts in the reality space, the PGA announced.
 

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

 
Intel unveiled a new line of microprocessor chips optimized to deliver HD video over the internet. Built utilizing a new formula that harnesses more of the chips’ electrical power, the processors will first be used in servers and high-end desktops to compress online video. But it should only be a matter of time before they trickle down to consumer-grade PCs.
 
Seattle-based Medio Systems and Shanghai-based mInfo Inc. are partnering on both technical and business levels to jointly develop a new mobile search, ad and content delivery platform for the Chinese market.
 
Another women’s online destination SheKnows.com acquired Soaps.com. The AtomicOnline division will add the popular soap opera site to its stable of vertical brands, which includes families.com, pregnancyandbaby.com and fabulousfoods.com.
 

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

 
New York-based Mammoth Advertising launched an online ad campaign to promote CBS/Paramount’s Oct. 30 release of the Twin Peaks Gold Box DVD. Fans are invited to create their own coffee-themed video mash-up using clips from the show or their own original scenes. First prize is a year’s supply of David Lynch’s organically grown coffee. ~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~
 

Internet advertising exceeded $5.2 billion for the 3rd quarter in the U.S., according to new figures released yesterday from the IAB and PricewaterhouseCoopers, a $1.1 billion or 25.3% increase over Q2 2006. Revenues for the first nine months of 2007 totaled $15.2 billion, up nearly 26 percent over the $12.1 billion recorded for the same period in 2006. Search continues to make up about 40% of all internet ad revenue.
 

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

 
TV Guide Network promoted Kristin Peace to VP/Development, Acquisitions and Broadband Development. She will continue to report to Matt Singerman, Senior Vice President, Programming, TV Guide Network.
 
Meredith Corporation upped Kieran G. Clarke to EVP & GM of Meredith Video Solutions, the company’s in-house production unit that creates broadcast quality video based on Meredith’s magazine brands for multi-platform outlets such as Better.tv and Parents.tv. Kieran will continue to serve as VP and GM of KPTV FOX-12, KPDX MYN-49 and LivePDX.com in Portland, OR.
 
Longtime Rainbow Media communications executive Matthew Frankel will join The Weinstein Company as SVP/Corporate Affairs effective Nov. 26, 2007. He will be based in New York, reporting to the company’s co-chairmen Harvey and Bob Weinstein.
 


~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

 
A group of WGA East writers launched their own strikenotes blog to get their two cents in about the strike. A posting made yesterday applauds an EW Online editorial for calling attention to the point that the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers allegedly wants to offer writers zero percentage of online ad revenue obtained from video streaming. (It also notes that this week’s print edition of EW tells a different story.) Meanwhile Buffy The Vampire creator Joss Whedon can be seen on the WGA’s YouTube channel arguing the point that writers are simply asking for a percentage of residual sales – meaning studios will only have to pay out after they clear a profit.
 
Clarification : Apparently EW Online wasn’t so accurate in its report regarding the Lost Missing Pieces up now on ABC.com. Verizon Wireless VCast subscribers are getting to see them exclusively for a week before they’re made available online.
