Cynopsis
05/09/06
Good Morning. It’s Tuesday, May 9, 2006, and this is your first early morning briefing.
Yesterday’s top item was that Warner Bros. Domestic TV Syndication would offer the syndicated rights to Two and A Half Men for both broadcaster’s air and as a broadband vehicle on the station’s website. Today’s top item is again Warner Bros. who will be the first major studio distributing its films and TV shows over the internet via BitTorrent peer-to-peer technology, for both VOD and/or purchase. The first offerings from Warner Bros. are expected this summer with titles including Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Tim Burton’s Corpse Bride and TV shows including The Dukes of Hazzard and Babylon 5. The whole idea here is to move those who tend to download pirated films and shows, to purchasing. And using BitTorrent as the vehicle is also an interesting move as BitTorrent was once one of the favorite sites for links to popular pirated movies.
Tonight’s Finale:
WB: Gilmore Girls at 8p
UPN: Veronica Mars at 9p
Nick at Nite: Search for the Funniest Mom in America at 930p
Bravo: Real Housewives of Orange County – The Reunion at 10p
* MORE GOOD STUFF *
Joining the group over at 60 Minutes come fall will be Anderson Cooper as a contributing reporter. This won’t take away from his gig at CNN where he heads up Anderson Cooper 360.
iN DEMAND Networks will launch a block of original prime-time series developed for the hi-definition viewing audience called MOJO. A slate of new series is in production now and will be ready to premiere June 18 on INHD. - Decades – 90-minute concerts where music legends play their hits accompanied by some of today’s biggest artists, such as Bonnie Raitt with Norah Jones and Elvis Costello with Fiona Apple. 10 episodes.

- Doctor Danger (working title) – Dr. Bob Arnot shares his love for exotic locales and intoxicating adventures with a touch of luxury, all with an element of danger. 8 episodes.
- Fueled – An inside look at the Pontiac GTO’s debut at “the Rolex” 24 Hours of Daytona, the oldest endurance race in America. 6 episodes.
- Technical Difficulties – Four people divided into two teams, battle in a scavenger hunt involving the mastery of today’s best tech toys. 8 episodes.
- Wall Street Warriors – A documentary series exploring the lives and attitude of those who make their livelihood on Wall Street. 8 episodes.
Comedy Central is in production with three new pilots: Mark and Mike stars Mark Borshardt and Mike Schank from American Movie, on their quest to make a new film in Milwaukee with no resources, but filled with many colorful characters; American Body Shop is an improvised narrative similar to the network’s series Reno 911, but set in the world of local auto body repair shops and the eccentric people who often work there; and an untitled DeRay Davis pilot will weave his urban point of view, his comedy stand-up comedy and his life experiences into this new half-hour variety show.
Kids TV real estate is growing again with the announcement of a new kids network that will feature bilingual programming content, from the combined efforts of Ion Media Networks (f/k/a Paxson Communications), Scholastic, NBC Universal, Telemundo, Corus Entertainment, and Classic Media/Big Idea. The as yet unnamed network, which is being referred to by the consortium as Smart Place for Kids, will launch Saturday, September 2, 2006, and will air across multiple distribution platforms including programming blocks on Ion’s 60 broadcast stations, on NBC and Telemundo on Saturday mornings, the latter from October with plans to air the block on Sunday mornings come January 2007, and on a new 24/7 digital kids broadcast channel, as well as through video-on-demand services and a branded website. The programming line-up and the name of the network are expected to be announced soon.
Heads up to you Knight Rider fans: The old Glen A. Larson series from the ’80s is being made into a film, according to Hollywood Reporter. Weinstein Co. has brought in Larson to write and exec produce the film. This isn’t the first time the K.I.T.T. car had its tires kicked for a feature film – the project had been at Revolution Studios before. Production with Weinstein Co. is expected to start next year.
MTV Overdrive, the music channel’s broadband network, will offer an interactive dual screen experience to coincide with the airing of this year’s live Video Music Awards on August 31 and later this fall with the series Total Request Live. MTV Overdrive will air live programs designed exclusively for the broadband channel to support the on-air experiences of TRL and the VMAs and vice versa. This dual screen experience is just one of the various platforms deployed by MTV to enhance the VMAs.
GSN and Fun Technologies Inc. are partnering to televise the first annual million dollar Worldwide Web Games championship, potentially bringing millions of casual game players together in an interactive platform. GSN will begin promotions for the event this month, directing viewers to GSN.com to compete in qualifying Worldwide Web Games tournaments. Hosted by SkillJam and WorldWinner, both subsidiaries of Fun Technologies, qualifying competitions are underway with players from around the world competing in three of the most popular skill-based games: Bejeweled 2, Solitaire or Zuma. The finals will take place September 9 at the Renaissance Hotel in Hollywood and the winner will be crowned World’s Best Casual Gamer and awarded the $1 million grand prize.
