Cynopsis: Classified Advantage
05.07.13
Good morning. It’s Tuesday, May 7, 2013, and this is your weekly issue of Cynopsis: Classified Advantage!
Welcome to Leadership Lessons, a new, regular column that focuses on conversations with senior managers and leaders in the TV world, speaking candidly about their professional journeys and how that informs what they look for when hiring new employees. Today, meet Jennifer Caserta, President and General Manager, IFC.
When was the first time you were in a leadership role?
When I began to run a larger department at Court TV as the Vice President of Ad Sales Marketing. I was responsible for setting the tone and goals of the six people who reported to me. It was meaningful because it was an emerging department that I had built and there was a real growth opportunity. I felt the responsibility for the first time. There’s a big weight to be carried. It was a balance between building a business and a team that needed direction.
What were early leadership lessons for you?
That one should never underestimate how much an organization craves leadership. It’s important to have a presence and affect a culture, that you put your method and vision out there. People feel a comfort when they have a consistent vision and goal. Sometimes there’s an inclination to pull back – but you should do the opposite.
What else was important to learn?
The difference between managing and leading. Management is more operational… a work chart and people who report into you. With leadership, it’s about reminding people what’s expected of them. You’re an ambassador for your business. You have to a lot more projecting of what you want people to do.
Are you a better manager now than you were say, ten years ago?
Yes. I knew that I had to step it up as a leader, so I went to see an executive coach. Often times people who work for you hold back. But this coach brings best practices into perspective and it’s nice to have someone tell you if you’re on the right track. It worked out very well for me. It’s good to have someone tell you like it is. I did some soul-searching and thought about who I admired… that was a sub-motivation. It gave me a different presence and helped make me more outward-facing.
What kind of culture do you like to foster?
One of transparency and clarity. When IFC went ad-supported and we refocused the brand on alternative comedy, it was important to let the team know where we were headed and why. I thought that coming together as an organization twice a year was the best way to communicate. While it was effective, what I found out is that people preferred an informal setting once a month. So we have been doing that for two years. We buy everybody pizza and at the start of that meeting we reiterate in two sentences why we’re there and what our goals are. There’s no doubt that anyone outside my door doesn’t know what my goals are.
What are some of the qualities you look for when interviewing candidates?
An interview is almost like a date. You’re going to spend more time with a new employee than your spouse. So it’s important to know what drives the person. I don’t like to rush interviews. I prepare for them: I’d never read their resume 5 minutes before they walk in the door. During the interview, I try to make people comfortable. It shouldn’t be a one-sided conversation. I want to learn what motivates them; what their taste and style are. I ask questions like, “What are you watching on TV right now? What do you read? What’s interesting about social media today? Why did you get into cable TV?” Then it’s easier to morph the conversation into talking about IFC. Nothing bothers me more than people who don’t do their homework before an interview. Know what’s going on and understand why.

Online Video: How the Heck Do I Measure This Stuff?

Robin Wilson: VP, Operations [Blip]
Should I be trying to market myself as a “personal brand” in my job search?
Yes! When I ran the Ivory Snow business for P&G, I always thought in terms of the four Ps: product, packaging, pricing and promotion. The same applies to you and your job search.
The product is you. What skills do you have to offer that are different from everyone else? Consumers buy Ivory Snow because it makes the baby clothes smell nice and emotionally it makes Mom feel good about what she is doing for her newborn. What’s your hook?
Packaging is the impression people have before they get to know you. Is your photo on LinkedIn of good quality, warm and professional looking? When people meet you at an event, do they find you engaging, likeable, articulate? Who are you following on Twitter? Are they extremists of any kind and are you following hundreds of them? That might not play well unless you’re interviewing with an organization in that space.
Pricing is all about your value. First, don’t lie about past salaries. That’s grounds to rescind an offer and employers routinely check this information as part of the hiring process. Don’t undersell yourself, but don’t miss out on an opportunity by being inflexible on price. Employers know it’s a very competitive market and negotiate on that basis. Maybe you can negotiate a trial salary as part of getting the job and proving yourself, with a bonus at the end of it.
Last is promotion. This is where your social media efforts trumpet you to the world. Thinking out of the box is your best strategy because there’s a lot of “noise” out there and you need to cut through the clutter. Most everyone can tell you about eTrade because of their talking baby commercials. How are you going to get noticed? Are you going to craft a cover letter that reads like an ad that is filled with insights about the hiring manager? Can you create a resume that looks like an eye because you want to work at CBS television? How about buying a domain name that ties to the company/job opening and filling it with a highly customized presentation about why you are the only person who should get this social media position?
These are all highly effective ways to brand yourself in the eyes of the employer and nail the job.
