Cynopsis: Classified

Advantage

05/03/11

Good morning – it’s Tuesday, May 3, 2011, and this is your weekly issue of Cyn opsis: Classified Advantage!

Bad Advice

Use a functional resume rather than a chronological to cover employment gaps.

There may be a time where this is sound advice, but not now.  Hiring managers understand there may be gaps within the last three years due to the economy, there is no need to try to hide the fact you were laid off.

The paper resume and cover letter are dead.

Not true.  Many people send both, email and snail mail.  There are problems with emails, ever try to read a resume on a Blackberry?  Goodbye to all that great formatting you spent hours creating.  Did your documents end up in the spam filter?  In our “paperless society,” it’s still prudent to send your resume and cover letter by both methods.

Always include your references.

How about never include your references.  Hiring managers take it for granted that you have references and if they want to see them, they will ask.  There is no need to provide them on your resume, or to even write that they are available upon request.  Your resume has little real estate, use it more wisely.

Forgo the objective and profile on your resume.

Perhaps the objective has given way to the profile, but the profile is still very important.  It is your chance, in two to three sentences, to make your case as to why this specific company should hire you.  A well worded, strong statement here can make all the difference.

Fill your resume with industry jargon.

The only jargon you really want to use in your resume or cover letter is the same jargon used in the classified explaining the position.  Many companies use scanners looking for key words, those words are usually the ones used in their classified ad.  Outside of that, too much industry lingo will make your documents less reader friendly.

Hand deliver your resume and cover letter unannounced.

The idea behind this is that it shows initiative and spunk.  But while it can work, most of the time is demonstrates a lack of respect for the companies time and resources by stopping someone from doing their job to handle your documents.  Which most of the time, will end up right in the trash, unopened.  Not everyone appreciates spunk. Ask Mr. Grant.

You can never be too early to an interview.

Yes you can.  Anything over 15 minutes early can lead to awkward situations.

Stand out by bringing the receptionist flowers or a cup of coffee.

Really awkward and borderline creepy.

Answering questions based solely on what you think the interviewer wants to hear.

While this may sound like a good idea, in the end it’s really not.  First, interviewers are prepared for such tactics, secondly and more importantly, you won’t come off as genuine or innovative.  You want to stand out in the crowd? Be yourself, you’re the only one who can.

Holidays area – bad time to look for a job.

Sometimes the opposite is true, companies need to hire people and do so quickly.  There is no bad time to apply for a job, don’t use the holidays as an excuse.

If you’re older, dress young for your interview.

Not even sure what this means except that you’ll probably look silly.  Let your experience and resume convey your industry youthfulness.  If you are current with the companies software and processes, your gray hair shouldn’t deter any hiring manager.

Don’t follow up with a phone call.

A couple of days after sending in your documents, call to make sure they were received by the proper department.  Any further information you may gather during the phone call, all the better.

Don’t send a thank you note to the interviewer, they never read them.

Dumb, dumb, dumb.  Most do read them and are appreciative of the common courtesy of the Thank you note.   Not only does this demonstrate your manners, but also you remind the hiring manager of your name.  Always good.

~ ACTIONABLE EXPERT ADVICE ~
The Ghost Whisperer: Do You Have a Ghost Haunting Your Career?
by Jessica Sitomer

Melinda Gordon communicates with ghosts who can’t move on because of unfinished business from their past. The obvious message for those of us who don’t get the opportunity to communicate with spirits, is: If you don’t learn from the mistakes of your past, your future will give you more of what you don’t like in your present, only the more you get, the worse your future will be!

Being a coach for 15 years, I’ve seen the mistakes people have made that were the differences between their success and in some cases, devastation (loss of home, divorce, illness due to stress, and the worst, suicide).

Allow me to be a “ghost whisperer” and share the top 10 mistakes people make that stop them from achieving their entertainment industry career dreams:

Getting stuck in old business habits that don’t work: Let’s face it, if you’ve been doing the same things over and over to generate work and you’re not happy with the results, you’ve got to try something new. Imagine a Ghost revealed himself to you to show you the same 3-5 things you’ve been doing to generate work. Can you envision what they are? Now imagine that the Ghost shows you 2012 and you’re doing the same things. How will you feel at the end of the year when your results are the same as they were this year, only you have more debt and more feelings of resentment? What about in 5 years, 10 years? What will your retirement look like if you don’t do something different?

Not treating the business like a full time job: This is 90% of not only my clients but also the hundreds of thousands of people pursuing entertainment careers. So do you want to stay in the 90% or be in the top 10%? To be in the top, you must be spending 40 hours a week on your business when you’re not working at your craft, and 10 hours a week when you do have a job in your craft.

Lack of consistency: This is the classic “New Years Resolution” example that is easiest to explain with a gym membership. At the beginning of the year, people join a gym making a resolution that “this year they will get fit.” Again, only 10-15% of the people stay consistent. The gym counts on that or they would be overcrowded. They just keep taking your money while you let your membership go to waste. Your competition is like those gym sales people, just counting on you to start strong in January and peter out as 2011 continues on, so that they stay on top and you never break-out!

Unable to “get back on the horse”: Many clients have made a big push, and then something gets in the way, or they get sidetracked, or they run out of steam and can’t “get back on the horse,” until the next year. Do you want to be having this conversation with me in 12 months from now? I hope not!

Fear of rejection: Fear is a career crusher, and the entertainment industry is like any other sales industry in that you have to get a lot of ‘nos’ to get to the important ‘yeses.’ I know you get that intellectually, but do you get it emotionally?

Not taking risks: Again it comes down to the 90%/10% rule in that 10% of the people in our industry take risks. Guess which group gets the top results? Every mentor I’ve interviewed had risks to share. They are necessary to move forward in your career.

Coming from a place of lack and desperation: So many people get themselves into a place where it’s too late. They are in financial crisis, which causes them to be in a state of desperation, which equals a continued cycle of lack of work. If you’re in this cycle, you must find a way out or it will only worsen.

Seeing why something won’t work instead of seeing the possibility: I call these people the ‘Naysayers’ always having a reason why something new won’t work, or why they can’t afford something they know is going to help them, or knocking something before they’ve tried it. Other versions are people who have “heard that doesn’t work” or people who have “tried it once and give up because it didn’t work.”

Lack of family support: This has always been a challenging one for me because, it usually occurs when the family doesn’t see you getting anywhere because of the reasons above. It’s hard to support someone who is causing financial strain on your life, or who is angry, bitter, and frustrated all of the time because he/she is not working. Your family wants you to be happy, and when you’re not working, you’re usually not.

Lack of self worth: This is where it all stems from. Whether you grew up with low self-esteem, or the lack of work has chipped away at your self worth, or you’ve had a great career and then lost it. These are just some of the few reasons why people’s lack of self worth, which disguises itself in many ways, sabotages their success in the industry.

Figure out what mistakes you’ve made in the past and solutions to those mistakes so you won’t make them in the future.

If Melinda can help the g hosts cross over, surely you can have a career cross-over too.

Questions from our Readers
Answered by Jessica Sitomer

In a group interview, how important is it to be the Alpha candidate and are there strategies on how to walk that fine line between being the Alpha and being the jerk?

In a group interview, it is best to show yourself in the best light. For example: don’t negate others, instead, say, “Yes, and…” to make your point without making someone else wrong. Don’t talk over others, just to get your point in. Listening skills can be evaluated just as much as speaking skills, so when others are speaking, show an interest, and really listen as opposed to thinking about what your next point to squeeze in will be. Trust that when it’s your turn to speak, you’ll know what to say. Do create rapport with the person conducting the interview (use subtle body language matching and mirroring). Do keep your head up and make eye contact with the person to whom you’re speaking. If you find yourself in a room full of “Alphas” (think the Trump Board Room on The Apprentice), it’s important to get yourself into the mix. Try interjecting with something like, “Excuse me, I know we’re all eager to get our points across, and as someone who hasn’t made my point yet, I’m going to interject here.” It shows, that you are respectful of others, and still assertive enough to get your point made.

Just how important are my shoes, belt and briefcase on a job interview. My shoes and belt are somewhat worn but not a disaster, my briefcase was my father’s and has a lot of age to it. But I love it. Can these items really hurt my cause?

Yes, they can absolutely hurt your cause! With discount stores galore, it is possible to get good looking shoes for under $20, a belt for $10 and a new briefcase for interviews. Once you get the job, you can pull out father’s briefcase, as it will be a good conversation starter. However, for the interview, you don’t want the subject matter to be an explanation of a meaningful yet worn briefcase. It’s about first impressions. If you were to interview with me in worn shoes, belt and beat up briefcase, I would assume details don’t matter to you, that if this is how you look for your interview (your best) how are you going to show up for work, and that you don’t care enough about making a first impression on me, so you most likely won’t care about representing my company to others. I just made all of those assumptions from a 4 sentence question, which I could read. If you were in front of me in your worn wardrobe, I’d be so busy ‘thinking’ these assumptions in my head, I’d probably miss half of the great stuff you’re saying. People may say they don’t care about these little details, but when someone comes in after you and looks fantastic, it gives them an advantage. To play with ZZ Top’s song a little “Everyone’s crazy ’bout a sharp dressed man.”
