Cynopsis: DIGITAL
05/31/11

Good morning, it’s Tuesday, May 31, 2011, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.  If you would like to read this or any other Cynopsis edition online, click here

In an encouraging sign for studios and content creators, the G8 economic block issued a lengthy statement on Friday recognizing the importance of intellectual property in democratic society and indicating a tougher stance on digital copyright infringement around the globe. While bullish about new developments such as cloud computing, social networking and citizen publications, the 93-item treatise warns against “challenges in promoting interoperability and convergence among our public policies on issues such as the protection of personal data, net neutrality, transborder data flow, ICT security, and intellectual property.” The statement also recognized the need to deal with cyber security issues and “attacks against the integrity of infrastructure, networks and services”.

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

As Apple inches closer to lining up content for its “iCloud” music locker service – the company has reportedly signed three of the four major music labels with Universal Music the only remaining holdout – some details about what the service will look like have emerged. A patent application explains that the service will have the ability to access any song you want to listen to on cloud-based servers, storing only a 30-second preview of the song on your device. iCloud will also have the ability to mirror your entire iTunes library in the cloud, per Businessweek, replacing lower-quality files with high fidelity ones and delivering tracks in a number of gadget-compatible formats. Less clear is what the service will cost; Apple has to recoup these new licensing fees somehow. One theory is that iCloud will be tied to the $99/year MobileMe storage service, which allows users to sync their mail, Safari bookmarks, documents, etc. between their Mac computers and iOS devices.

News spread about late rapper Tupac Shakur being alive and well and living in New Zealand after hackers planted the story on a PBS website on Saturday night claiming as much. PBS confirmed that the website had been hacked on its official Twitter account early Monday morning, by which time the story had been removed. (It had been posted on the “PBS NewsHour” site, produced by WETA-TV in Arlington, Va.) There was no mention of Jim Morrison.

Amazon sold about 440,000 99-cent downloads of the new Lady Gaga release “Born This Way” across the two days of the promotion, according to Billboard. The company will pay about $7.40 per sale or $3.18 million overall when wholesale costs are factored in – not bad for a story picked up by hundreds of news outlets.

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

Some more details have also emerged about Facebook‘s content sharing plans. The social networking giant has expanded its talks with Spotify to include video companies such as Netflix to allow users share the movies, TV shows, books, news and music they are consuming with the their friends, reported the NYTimes. Facebook wouldn’t license the actual content, but lists of what your friends are watching, reading or listening to would be displayed in a continuous feed and friends would gain access to the same content with a single click.

Metacafe has partnered with StrikeTV to ask viewers pick their favorite of the seven original web series (one for each day of the week) from well-known creators in Hollywood, including writers from The Simpsons, The Office and various major motion pictures. Each featured series will present four short-form episodes during the voting period ending June 13, with each individual episode to be premiere on the channel each day at 11:00 a.m. PT. The MetaVote audience-favorite pick will be picked up for a second season by the video sharing site, supported by a sponsoring brand advertiser.

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

Video ad network YuMe has integrated its ad platform with over-the-top streaming video platform Roku, creating a new software developer’s kid (SDK) to provide a further way for third-party content creators to monetize their work. DreamTV and Blastro Networks are among the first publishers to utilize the solution.

Cooliris
introduced a new 3D iPad ad technology in partnership with mobile ad network InMobi to promote a new Weather Channel series “From the Edge,” reports the BBC. The platform allows users to flip and turn products to see all sides and to see different perspectives of the product as the page scrolls up and down. The Weather Channel series follows photographer Peter Lik as he travels across the U.S. in search of the perfect photo.

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

That didn’t take long. Ebay’s PayPal has already filed a lawsuit against Google claiming its new Wallet program (which allows you take pay for things with a wave of your cell phone) has stolen pieces of its intellectual property from the online payment service. PayPal spent three years trying to work out a deal enabling the company to handle payments for Android smartphones, only to see Google scuttle the talks and hire away PayPal lead negotiator Osama Bedier to handle its own negotiations, according to court documents.

The FCC has asked AT&T to provide evidence that it doesn’t have enough spectrum to provide future services, the main justification for its merger with T-Mobile. The FCC also wants to know whether AT&T would keep the T-Mobile brand and its pricing plans. Meanwhile opposition against the merger is crested as today’s deadline for filing former petitions against it loomed. More than 25,000 filings had been submitted as of Friday, with more than 10,000 pouring in since Thursday alone.

The MPAA has requested an injunction against online movie rental service Zediva to stop it from the operating, the company that allows users to rent physical DVD and DVD players and operate them remotely over the internet. The motion is scheduled to be heard in a Central District California court on July 25.

California’s online privacy bill has stalled in the state senate after losing in a tie 16-16 vote, reports the LATimes. Sponsor Ellen Corbett (D-San Leandro) plans to reintroduce the often-amended measure this week.

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

A group of core apps are responsible for a lion’s share of the activity on the Google Android Market, according to the latest month report from Netherlands-based researcher Distimo. Some 96 applications have been downloaded more than 5 million times in the Google Android Market, with Google Maps being the only app with more than 50 million downloads. About 20% of all free apps and 80% of all paid apps have been downloaded less than 100 times in the Google Android Market worldwide to date. Distimo found that it is more challenging for Android app developers to monetize their apps using a one-off fee monetization model. Only two paid applications have been downloaded more than half a million times in the Google Android Market worldwide to date, while six paid apps in the Apple App Store for iPhone generated the same number of downloads within a two-month timeframe in the United States alone.

The number of online video viewers worldwide is expected to surpass 1.3 billion by 2016, growing from a current 2010 base of just over 780 million as more consumers look to their broadband connections for content, according to a new ABI Research report. The Over-the-Top (OTT) video industry will likewise grow with companies such as Netflix, Hulu and Apple’s iTunes benefiting from further TV integrations. iTunes and Hulu alone now represent about 15% of the OTT market.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Comcast executive Amy Banse has been named Managing Director of a new venture capital fund Comcast Ventures that combines former NBC parent General Electric Co.’s Peacock Equity Fund with Comcast Interactive Capital. Amy will look to fund early-to-late stage entertainment, communications and digital technology start-ups, relocating to San Francisco and
reporting to Comcast CFO Michael Angelakis.

Tremor Media has hired Paige Cone as Entertainment Marketing Manager. Paige will be based in New York and work with Tremor’s entertainment industry clients. She previously served as Interim Director, Digital Marketing, for Walt Disney Studios and as Ad Product Manager for MySpace.

~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

Twitter began as a brief text-based service but a number of third-party applications have emerged to emphasize the services’ visual capabilities. Photofon is a new free iPhone app from the Echofon family of Twitter apps that strips down your Twitter feed to focus solely on the pictures people are posting on the microblogging service. (The app is actually the latest incarnation of the Echofon iPhone app, formerly known as TwitterFon.) Echofon automatically keeps unread tweets in sync between your computer, your iPhone and your iPad and sifts through incoming news so that you only see pictures your friends are posting.
