Cynopsis: Kids!
5/29/07
Good morning. It’s Tuesday, May 29, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing.
Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End opened over the long holiday weekend and set a new Memorial Day weekend record with an estimated $142 million, knocking X-Men: The Last Stand (2006) and its $122.8 million out of the way. If you include the Thursday night preview receipts, the movie took in upwards of $156 million for the weekend. Other positive weekend news for Disney – the global earnings for At World’s End first six days set another record with $401 million, and it hasn’t even opened yet in China or India. That said, for those who anticipated At World’s End would tumble as many records as Spider-Man 3, that was not to be. As far as the three-day weekend take, At Worlds End earned $115.1 million, putting it as the fourth biggest weekend opening ever, behind Spider-Man 3 ($151.1m), Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest (2006/$135.6m) and last weekend’s Shrek the Third ($121.6m).
Exiting his position as President of Warner Bros. Animation is Sander Schwartz. He will remain at the studio where he served as Prexy for six years responsible for TV and direct-to-DVD animated properties, under a new production agreement. He plans to produce broadband and new media animated properties. Previously, Schwartz created animated programming content for Columbia TriStar and Sony Pictures, the latter where he founded and was President for Sony’s Family Entertainment division. No word yet on who will take Schwartz’s place as head of Warner Bros. Animation.
NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
Fox has picked up the rights to develop Electronic Arts’ oh-so popular video game franchise The Sims as a live-action feature film, per the Hollywood Reporter. John Davis will helm the picture that will feature a screenplay by Brian Lynch. According to the report, EA’s Sims Studio boss Rob Humble will oversee the project for EA.
Japan’s Madhouse Entertainment and France-based Denis Friedman Productions (DFP) have joined to produce a new CG-animated movie titled Yona Yona Penguin, according to Screen Daily. The movie, which is slated for a December 2008 release in Japan, is about a group of kids and their adventures in a fantasy world, including a young girl who believes they will be saved by a penguin. Yona Yona Penguin will be helmed by noted Japanese anime director Rintaro (aka Shigeyuki Hayashi), a co-founder of Madhouse Studios, and animated by a combination of Dynamo Pictures and DFP. The movie will be distributed in North America by Madhouse’s US division of with Shochiku. Additionally, Shochiku will distribute the picture in Japan, while Hong Kong’s Golden Network will handle distribution across other regions in Asia, and France’s Wild Bunch takes responsibility for the remaining international deals.
Recording artist Justin Timberlake has launched Tennman Records, a joint venture with Interscope Records. Timberlake will serve as Chairman and CEO of the new label, which will be based in LA and will be distributed by Interscope Geffen A&M. Ken Komisar, former VP/A&R, Sony BMG Music Entertainment, has been named as President of Tennman Records. The first deals for the label will be announced soon.
MORE KIDS STUFF
Family Guy Wars … after a fashion, well kinda. Seems that HRH George Lucas has bestowed his blessing on Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane and the series writers/producers who plan to create a spoof of his Star Wars saga, according to just about every fan site known in this and every other universe. The episode, which will be part of the upcoming fifth season of Fox’s Family Guy, will feature the Griffin clan acting out scenes from Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope. Stewie, possibly the funniest character on TV (though my kids would vote for Zack Braff) will take on the role of Darth Vader. Don’t know about the rest of the galaxy but I pretty much can’t wait.
Canada’s Family Channel will premiere the second season of Hannah Montana from Friday July 6 at 5:35p. The news season also lands a new Monday-Friday schedule on the network. Produced by It’s a Laugh Productions Inc. in association with Disney Channel, Hannah Montana is created by Michael Poryes, Rich Correll and Barry O’Brien.
AOL RED will broadcast the Spring Awakening & Degrassi Live Verbal Mash-Up. The special teen town hall discussion features the casts of Broadway musical Spring Awakening and The N hit series Degrassi: The Next Generation, also currently in syndication.
MARKETING/LICENSING
AMC Theaters will launch AMC Summer MovieCamp, its second summer offering free movies for kids and adults. Each Wednesday June 27-August 15, 2007 (except July 4) at 10a participating AMC movie theaters across 39 US markets will feature free G and PG-rated movies. Individual ticket purchases available up to a week in advance and group reservations (25+) available a week out at 120 locations. Movies that will be featured this summer include Happy Feet, Charlotte’s Web, Ice Age: The Meltdown and Open Season. During Summer MovieCamp, AMC will also offer KidsPack concession combos for $3.
