Japan’s earthquake and tsunami have hit Sony harder than expected as the company warned Monday the tragedies would contribute to a ¥260 billion ($3.2 billion) loss for the just-ended fiscal year. Sony, which has also been the victim of a series of hacker attacks on its PlayStation and Qriocity networks, expects to incur restoration, removal and cleaning costs of some 11 billion yen while its entertainment division undergoes an off year and some of its core product lines are under siege. The losses would be second only to 1995 when the company reported losses of ¥293 billion.

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

Just how powerful have Facebook and Twitter become to the television viewing landscape? Social networking platforms have been prized so far for their ability to drum up buzz and drive tune-in to shows but a new report from British researcher Futurescape suggests ad sales is the real target. Recent Facebook recruitments suggest that Facebook is hiring sales executives to compete directly for the global $180 billion TV ad budget. And as connected TV, smartphone and tablet platforms continue to grow in popularity and sophistication, social networks will only increase their influence over TV ratings, according to Futurescape.

A new survey from MasterCard indicates that younger consumers at least are ready now to begin swiping their phones at retail outlets and vending machines to pay for things. Some 63% percent of 18-34 year olds said they would be at ease using mobile phones to make purchases versus those age 35 or older (37%). Another 65% of consumers aged 18-34 said they feel more naked without their phones than their wallets, compared to 34% of those in the 35 and older group. Among the sexes more men than women (51% vs. 40%) would be at ease using mobile phones to make purchases, and more men than women (49% vs. 45%) would be impressed by someone who paid a bill with a mobile application than with a credit card.

Hulu Plus completed another big integration, this time with the latest Tivo Premiere set-top box. To promote the subscription service with Tivo customers, Hulu is offering the $7.99/mo. service for free for the first 6 months. (The deal expires Aug. 30.) Functionality includes menu navigation, fast-forward, rewind and thirty-second skip. There’s also a cool picture-in-picture feature that allows you to watch a video while you’re searching for something else to watch. Unfortunately, the integration replicates the user interface of other Hulu Plus adaptations and is not customized for the Tivo Premiere. When it launched last year, the Premiere made a show of integrating third party viewing experiences into a unified user interface – apparently the rush to complete the integration was deemed more important than the elegance of the interface itself.
