Should I be doing other things while job seeking and, if so, what?

Definitely. This is the time to get out of your comfort zone and start expanding your world of activities and, with it, your social circle. Many people have been offered new jobs as a result of skills learned while volunteering and/or the new friendships made. Here is a video about a woman who developed public speaking skills through her volunteer efforts, leading her to a new job and career. 
Meetups are a great way to connect locally with other professionals. These affinity groups offer education and socializing to further individual career goals. 

Volunteering can also be a rewarding way to spend time if you’re not fully employed. It gives you a sense of contribution and it connects you with others. In the process, volunteering may lead you to reconsider your professional goals and has also been known to lead to a full-time job. For example, the parent who volunteers at school and shows interest in substitute teaching is more likely to be considered (assuming qualified) than the person who is not involved with school activities. Two fantastic places to start hunting for volunteer opportunities in your area are through Idealist and VolunteerMatch. Both services provide connections based on geographic location and your particular interest/qualifications.

Chamber of Commerce meetings, groups that bring hobbyists together like cycling organizations and ski clubs, and athletic coaching are also great ways to reconnect with your local community.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Bruce Rosenblum will exit his post as President, Warner Bros. Television Group after over 20 years with the studio. Taking over will be Peter Roth, president of Warner Bros. Television. The news has yet to be confirmed by Warner Bros.

Deborah Turness, editor of U.K.’s ITV News, will be named NBC News President, says The Hollywood Reporter. She will replace Steve Capus, who left the position in February. No official announcement has been made by the network.

Ric Harris has been promoted to President and General Manager of NBC Connecticut/WVIT, effective immediately. Harris previously served as Vice President of Sales for NBC Connecticut. He joined the station from Accenture, where he was Manager of Communications, Media and Technology.

Carlos Marquez-Sterling has been named Vice President of Development and Production at Zodiak Latino. Marquez-Sterling, formerly Senior Director at MundoFOX affiliate WGEN, will develop new unscripted series and adapt Zodiak entertainment formats for both the US Hispanic and Latin American markets.

Glenn Hendricks has been appointed Vice President of Licensing of Firefly Brand Management. He previously served as Creative Director for IMG Licensing.

Nadine Young has joined Vizeum communications agency as Chief Strategy Officer. In this newly created position, Young will be responsible for developing insight-based strategies and communications plans. Young last served as Managing Partner and Group Communications Director at Mindshare.

Scott Sassa has been named Vice Chairman at El Rey Network, the new English-language cable network geared toward young adult Latinos. The network, which will have nation-wide carriage via Comcast, is set to launch in December.

Granite Broadcasting Corporation has announced that broadcast veteran Bill Ransom will retire from his current role as President and General Manager of its WKBW-TV, the ABC affiliate serving Buffalo, New York. Ransom, who has been with Granite since 1989, will officially depart on June 30, 2013.

CMT has tapped Emmy Award-winning television veteran Quinn Brown for the newly-created position of Executive Producer. Brown is charged with overseeing all of the channel’s hosted news/entertainment shows from pre-production through post-production, including the recently launched CMT Hot 20 Countdown, CMT #1 Music and a Movie and various network specials. Brown previously helped launch Fuse News for Madison Square Garden’s Fuse TV.
George P. Johnson, a Project: WorldWide agency, has announced the appointment of marketing industry veteran Jude Braunstein as Executive Director, Client Services. Braunstein will be responsible for creating new brand communities and galvanizing those communities to action in ways that drive client business performance.

Global distributor Banijay International has appointed Jimmy Humphrey as Sales and Acquisitions Manager. Humphrey spent seven years at FremantleMedia Enterprises as Acquisitions and Development Executive before moving to an acquisitions role at Shine International. In his new post he will take responsibility for sales to UK, Australia, New Zealand, Scandinavia, Italy and Portugal, and acquisition of formats and finished tape for international exploitation in the UK, Scandinavia, Australia and New Zealand.

Echo Bridge Entertainment has named Camilo Bernal as Vice President, New Media, US Hispanic and International, effective immediately. Bernal, formerly Senior Vice President of Global Distribution at Cedal Entertainment Production, will be responsible for all New Media business development functions and the planning, deployment, and management in the multi-platform expansion of Echo Bridge Digital Media initiatives in the US Hispanic market and worldwide.
Island Def Jam Music Group has promoted Shawn “Pecas” Costner to Executive Vice President, Def Jam Recordings. In his new post, Pecas will help lock in and coordinate all frontline activities for the Def Jam label and help connect artists with their plans of release, nurture new signings and direct the label forward into new platforms.

Lindsay Hadley has joined Indianapolis-based advertising agency Young & Laramore as Art Director, effective immediately. Hadley will work on the agency’s Scotts LawnService, DL Couch and Building Tomorrow accounts.

Warner Bros. has realigned its television and home entertainment operations. Peter Roth will now serve as President and Chief Content Officer, Warner Bros. Television Group, while retaining his title and responsibilities as President, Warner Bros. Television, Warner Horizon Television and Animation. He will add creative oversight of Telepictures Productions and Warner Bros. International Television Production to his responsibilities. Craig Hunegs will now serve as President, Business and Strategy, Warner Bros. Television Group, with responsibility for the business operations of the Group. Jeffrey Schlesinger will now serve as President, Warner Bros. Worldwide Television Distribution and be responsible for distribution of the Studio’s content to all television platforms worldwide. Thomas Gewecke, previously President, Warner Bros. Digital Distribution, has been named Chief Digital Officer and Executive Vice President, Strategy and Business Development, Warner Bros. Entertainment, and is responsible for driving the Studio’s worldwide digital growth and managing its global business strategy. Cablevision Systems Corporation has named Clifford S. Harris as Senior Vice President – law, programming. Harris, who joined Cablevision in 2005 as senior counsel, will advise Cablevision’s Programming Department with respect to creating and negotiating programming agreements and provide counsel on all programming-related legal and regulatory matters as well as copyright issues.

Eli Lehrer has been named Senior Vice President & Head of Non-Fiction Development, Lifetime networks. Lehrer, who last served as Vice President of Development at Bravo Media, will be responsible for overseeing all non-scripted development and will formally join the company on July 8.

REELZ has made three appointments to its ad sales team. Tim Shaw, formerly of Turner Entertainment Sales, has been named Vice President, National Sales Manager. He will responsible for growing revenue through media and marketing partnerships.

Elizabeth Tumulty has been named Executive Vice President, Affiliate Relations for the CBS Television Network, effective June 1. She will work closely with Diana Wilkin, President, Affiliate Relations, on multiple fronts including negotiating new affiliation contracts, coordinating with the CBS Affiliate Board and working on all affiliate-related initiatives. Tumulty last served as Executive Vice President, Network Distribution for The CW Network.

James Nuzzo has been promoted to Senior Executive Vice President, Operations and Business Planning of Cablevision Systems Corporation. Nuzzo, who last served as Executive Vice President, Business Planning, will provide operational oversight in the cable division and lead business planning efforts to ensure that the organization functions seamlessly as it executes plans designed to achieve Cablevision’s customer-focused goals.

Kurt Davis has been appointed Vice President, News Services for CBS News. He last served as Executive News Director at CBS affiliate KENS-TV in San Antonio, Texas. In his new role, Davis will lead CBS News’ satellite news gathering organization, which provides news and information to 200 CBS affiliates as well as to broadcasters around the world.
