Good morning, it’s Tuesday, May 1, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing.

Tony Snow is back at work in the White House Press Room, just weeks after learning his cancer was back.  Snow said he will begin chemotherapy on Friday and he’s feeling very optimistic of how this will turn out – hoping to turn his cancer into a management chronic disease.  “If cancer is merely a nuisance for a long period of time, that’s fine with me,” said Snow.

Cablevision Systems Corp. will sell its shares in two regional sports networks that are part of Cablevision’s Rainbow Media Holdings: 60% in FSN Bay Area and 50% in FSN New England, to Comcast Corp. for $570 million in cash. This transaction expands Comcast’s sports holdings as it already owns four Comcast SportsNets. Cablevision still operates Madison Square Garden and Radio City Music Hall, as well as MSG network and Fox Sports New York, in addition to the cable networks AMC, IFC and WE tv.

AMC will introduce a new monthly movie franchise called AMC Gold in October which will highlight one great film that the network deems is essential movie-watching. The first film to be featured is Sergeant York, followed by other classics including On the Waterfront and From Here to Eternity.

Starz Entertainment will launch three new hi-def channels: East Coast feeds of Starz Comedy, Starz Edge, and Starz Kids & Family.  They will complement the existing Starz HD channel, which is available in East and West Coast feeds, (as well as the Starz On Demand HD and Encore On Demand HD services).  The new channels are expected to launch by the end of this summer.

Starting this week, Twentieth Television will make its daily The Morning Show with Mike and Juliet available to American service men and women stationed overseas via AFN American Forces Network. The show, which is broadcast live from the FOX studios in New York, will air on AFN Monday-Friday from 8-9a.

Gemstar-TV Guide International, Inc. announced its TV Guide Channel will be re-branded as of June 4 under a new name to TV Guide Network. The change reflects the network’s move into more of a television guidance and entertainment network from a primarily utility service. TV Guide is currently distributed to more than 80 million homes in the U.S. via cable and satellite.

ExerciseTV will launch on Bresnan Communications this July making its free on-demand fitness programming available to Bresnan’s digital subscribers in Colorado, Montana and Wyoming. This addition takes ExerciseTV’s subscription base to more than 20 million homes nationwide.

Hallmark Channel is now available in more than 82 million homes nationwide, which represents an increase of 9 million new subscribers since May 2006 and 7.45 million subscribers year-to-date based on Nielsen’s May 2007 Universe Estimate. This jump in subscribers is due to the network’s recent distribution renewal agreement with EchoStar’s DISH Network and its repositioning to DISH’s AT200 package. And earlier this year, Hallmark Channel also reupped its distribution pack with Mediacom.

Veteran television syndication salesman, Harvey Reinstein, died April 6 on his 78th birthday, at his home in Lake Worth, FL. Respected, admired and loved by many in the industry, Harvey worked for such companies as Four Star, Metromedia, MGM and Lorimar. He is survived by his two children and three grandchildren. Memorials honoring Harvey’s life can be made to the American Cancer Society.

Through its online component, History.com, The History Channel is introducing a group of digital short-form originals this year:

  • Band of Bloggers – debuts third quarter; will cull soldier’s videos about their war experiences from the battlefield.
  • Young Indiana Jones Documentary Collection – premieres fourth quarter; George Lucas supervised production of 94 half-hour documentaries that are historically accurate and complement the fictional television movies.
  • Hero Ships – starts fourth quarter; short-form broadband series that researches accounts of famous ships such as the USS Missouri or USS Omaha.
  • History Uncut – begins second quarter; specific moments in history are presented unedited and unfiltered.
  • The Naked Underground – debuts second quarter; this broadband series is a spin-off of the weekly series Cities of the Underworld. Each 4-5-minute short-form segment examines an urban myth about a city.
  • Greatest Stores Ever Told – premieres fourth quarter; based on the books by Rick Beyer and each segment relates an unknown, peculiar story from history.

In addition, The History Channel is developing several major specials for the linear channel:

  • A Global Warning – premieres fourth quarter; special that explores the questions concerning global warming issues.
  • Stalking Jihad – debuts fourth quarter; special that is based on the book by Mark Bowden and reveals how U.S. intelligence tracks terrorists.
  • Lost Book of Nostradamus – airs fourth quarter; a new investigation regarding how a manuscript, believed to have been written by Nostradamus, ended up in Italy’s National Library in Rome.
  • Manhunt – premieres fourth quarter; in-depth report on the twelve-day manhunt for John Wilkes Booth, the man who assassinated Abraham Lincoln.
  • Egypt Project (wt) – debuts first quarter 2008; this special looks at the greatest find in Ancient Egypt since King Tut’s tomb was opened in 1923.
  • China’s First Emperor – airs third quarter 2008; CHINA Central Television works in tandem with The History Channel to take viewers into ancient China to tell the story of Chin Shihuang, The First Emperor of China.

Wilmer Valderrama, who most fans know as Fez from That ’70s Show, has signed a development deal with FremantleMedia N.A. to create both scripted and alternative programming. While it’s not definite he will star in any of these projects, the possibility has not been ruled out either.

Warren Littlefield has renewed his development deal with ABC Television Studio, for an additional two years.  Littlefield will continue to develop new projects for the studio via his Littlefield Co. shingle.  With the upcoming upfront season, Littlefield has no pilots up for potential pickup.

According to Variety, HBO‘s newest project in the mix is a 30m comedy about a thirtysomething woman, set in Africa.  Written by Jane Bussman, the story is about a teacher who leaves her husband behind in the states to go work with an organization in war-torn Africa.  There she will come upon others who are trying to do something good, as well as the opportunists using the venue for their own gain.  The project is still in the early stages and at this point does not have a producer or a title.
