Other NBC Upfront News:

  • Heroes: Origins – spin-off of Heroes which will begin airing in its Monday night time slot when that series goes on hiatus. This new series will focus on fresh, never-before-seen characters. NBC will also include an interactive element via NBC.com where viewers will select one Heroes: Origins character to appear on Heroes the following season. The network has ordered 30 combined episodes of both series.
  • The Apprentice – on the bench for now but without a time slot. NBC will reassess where to place the series after all schedules are announced.
  • Law & Order – NBC has opted to launch the 18th season of this series in January after Sunday Night Football completes its run. Also, as a potential US Presidential Candidate, expect Fred Thompson to leave the show.
  • Jerry Seinfeld will return to the Peacock as he is working with DreamWorks to produce 20 live-action comedy “minisodes” that will air as interstitials on NBC recounting his experience voicing the animated film Bee Movie. The minisodes will also air on NBC.com on specific days before and after the film launches in theaters on November 2.
  • Law & Order: CI is not on the fall primetime schedule because it will move to USA Network for its seventh season with first-run episodes airing on USA and encores airing on NBC.
  • Other comedy updates – NBC has ordered 30 half-hours of The Office and five one-hour episodes, and has increased the order of My Name Is Earl to 25 episodes. So far, the network has ordered only 18 episodes of Scrubs.
  • What’s not on the fall schedule? The Black Donnellys, Studio 60, Crossing Jordan, Raines; Thank God You’re Here, The Real Wedding Crashers, and Identity.

NBC New Series Descriptions:

  • Journeyman – San Francisco newspaper reporter and husband/father suddenly travels through time, changing people’s lives and reuniting with his former fiance. From Twentieth Century Fox Television.
  • Chuck – a computer geek opens a government email and downloads a server-full of confidential data into his brain, which makes him an unlikely secret agent fighting international terrorists. Produced by College Hill Pictures and Wonderland Sound and Vision in association with Warner Bros. Television.
  • Bionic Woman – Jamie Sommers is back in this updated version of the woman who is given extraordinary powers and tries to use them for good. From NBC Universal Television Studio.
  • Life  a detective is given a second chance, returning to the police force after spending years in prison for a crime he didn’t commit. Produced by NBC Universal Television Studio.
  • Lipstick Jungle – dramedy based on the novel by Candance Bushnell about three high-powered friends who are successful and stand by each other during life struggles. From NBC Universal Television Studio.
  • The IT Crowd – comedy based on a British comedy about the overlooked techies who work for a large, impersonal corporation. From NBC Universal Television Studio.
  • The Singing Bee – variety-competition show where contestants must sing the lyrics correctly to popular songs. Produced by the Gurin Company and Juma Entertainment, LLC.
  • World Moves – a talent competition series from executive producer and American Idol judge Randy Jackson featuring dance teams from around the world hoping to win an international touring contract.

The syndicated game show Let’s Play Crosswords from Program Partners and Merv Griffin Entertainment has now cleared 85% of the U.S. for the 2007-2008 season. The half-hour show has recently added 55 new affiliates and now boasts clearances in 28 of the Top 30 markets and 45 of the Top 50 markets. Both MTV and MTV2 will air season two of Rob & Big starting May 22 at 1030p. This new season will introduce their new pet – a miniature horse and more adventures. The series will also be seen on MTV.com and the first episode will be available to download on iTunes as early as today.

TV Guide Network will premiere the third season of Look-A-Like on May 29 at 8p. The makeover series that gives ordinary people a chance to portray their favorite star in front of a camera, is produced by Kaleidoscope Entertainment, Inc.

On June 4 at 9p FOX will debut the next season of Hell’s Kitchen with Chef Gordon Ramsay. Twelve aspiring restaurateurs will battle for the title of Head Chef at a new restaurant in the Green Valley Ranch Resort, Spa and Casino in Las Vegas.

Cox Communications, Inc. and Discovery Communications have completed the exchange of Cox’s 25% stake in Discovery for Travel Media, Inc., the entity that owns Travel Channel and TravelChannel.com. Travel Media retains approximately $1.3 billion in cash.

Kalil Holding Group, LLC, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Kalil & Co., Inc. has inked two separate contracts to purchase several radio stations from Fort Bend Media Broadcasting Company and LaGrange Broadcasting Corporation. The stations involved in these transactions include: WBNZ-FM/Frankfort, MI; KMBV-FM/Navasota, TX; KEZB-FM/Edna, TX; KTXM-FM and KHLT-AM of Halletsville, TX; and KYKM-FM of Yoakum, TX. The deals are subject to FCC approval.

Correction :  The new MyNetwork TV program is called Paradise Hotel (not Hotel Paradise) and it’s a Fox Reality Original co-production with MyNetwork TV.  Mentorn USA, who produced the original Fox series, is also producing this one.
 

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

IFC is working on a new original scripted comedy Bollywood Hero starring Chris Kattan as himself in this mostly fictional series. The eight-part half-hour series follows Chris as he heads to India to become Bollywood’s newest leading man. Produced by Snackaholic and 3 Arts Entertainment.

Casting Call: TVWeekly.com is looking for interior designers in the Los Angeles area with camera experience to host projects on various craft channels. Auditions will be this Thursday in Burbank and each participant must bring a completed scrapbook, papercrafting or jewelry project with directions. ~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Mediaedge:cia, a division of WPP’s GroupM, has officially launched in Romania. Operating there since 2000, Mediaedge:cia will be led by Bogdan Prajisteanu, Managing Director who will supervise a team of 20 executives.

Greenville, SC-based Erwin-Penland has added Karen Walker as Copywriter and Jason Smith as Art Director.

BNC (Bragman Nyman Cafarelli) has formed a new Media Relations division and in so doing has made several executive appointments: Lewis Kay, SVP, will head the new unit in the areas of business development and administration, reporting to Michael Nyman, CEO and Chris Robichaud, President. Brad Cafarelli will continue as Vice Chairman and Rick Jennings, VP, will continue to work with Lewis. To keep up with the company’s slew of new clients Joanna Chichocki has been promoted to Senior Account Executive; Ayn Allen has joined as Senior Account Executive; Allegra Haddigan has been named Account Executive; and Leslie Juarez will become Junior Account Executive.

NBC Universal Television Stations has named Linda Sullivan as President/GM of KNBC/Los Angeles. In addition, Rich Cerussi will move into the position vacated by Linda Sullivan at KNTV/San Francisco as he becomes President/GM of that station. Both appointments begin immediately.

Gwen Kinsey has been appointed as President/GM of WKRN/Nashville, owned by Young Broadcasting, Inc. Gwen will also continue in her duties as President/GM of WATE-TV.

MGM has recruited Gary Marenzi as Co-President/Worldwide Television, sharing the management of the division with Jim Packer. Both executives will oversee the studio’s television sales operations with Gary focusing on the international marketplace and Jim on television distribution, channels and digital media for North America. Both Co-Presidents will report to Rick Sands, COO.

Twenty-year industry veteran, Sue Danaher will lead Reactrix Systems, Inc. as President. Sue joins the company from MTV Networks where she was EVP/GM, Advertising Sales.

World Wrestling Entertainment, Inc. (WWE) has made a few key staffing moves: Stephanie McMahon Levesque has been advanced to EVP/Talent and Creative Writing to manage all creative writing for the TV and PPV programming as well as handling the talent relations department; Geof Rochester has been made EVP/Marketing to spearhead global marketing, integrated brand efforts, talent branding, live events, PPV and other areas, reporting to Vince McMahon, Chairman; and John Laurinaitis has been upped to SVP/Talent Relations, reporting to Stephanie McMahon Levesque.

David Di Lorenzo has been tapped as VP/Retail Marketing at Taffy Entertainment. Based in Los Angeles, David is charged with developing and implementing merchandising and promotional programs.

Chad Woodrick has been elevated to the position of VP/Syndication and Sales Planning Research at Sony Pictures Television (SPT). Based in Culver City, Chad will manage the sales planning area for the research department in addition to his current duties of supervising all research support for the company’s U.S. sales team. He will report to Douglas Roth, SVP/Television Research.

SUNDAY – A18-49 AnalysisABC hung on and won Sunday night with a 4.0/12 A18-49, according to fast affiliate ratings from Nielsen Media Research. In second place was CBS with 3.7/11, and then FOX 2.6/8, NBC 1.7/5, UNIV 1.4/4, CW 0.7/2 and TELE 0.3/1. ABC was the early winner at 7p with America’s Funniest Home Videos at 2.2/9. The two-hour Survivor: Fiji finale on CBS started at 8p and won this hour with 4.0/13. Then at 9p, ABC swooped into first place with Desperate Housewives at 6.0/15, ahead of the second finale hour of CBS’ Survivor at 4.9/13. More of a battle ensued at 10p, as ABC’s Brothers & Sisters won by a smidge with 4.3/12 while CBS’ Survivor: Fiji Reunion came in at 4.3/11.
