Good morning, it’s Tuesday, May 13, 2008, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
HBO dropped a bomb on the industry just a week before the Cable Show begins. The premium network is ready to announce a deal to bring its original programming to the iTunes platform per Portfolio.com with – get this NBC – flexible pricing built into the deal. Episodes of some HBO shows may retail for more than the standard $1.99/episode, speculates the article. (It’s not television, after all, it’s HBO.) The deal is important for a couple of reasons. Budging on the pricing issue should create an opening for other studios to renegotiate with Apple. Meanwhile HBO has been notoriously slow to offer its programming on digital platforms – the perception being parent company Time Warner wanted to make sure there was still a compelling reason to keep that cable subscription active. This time it was Time Warner pushing for HBO to extend its content, deciding there was too much profit being left on the table. That said, don’t be surprised if only past seasons will be available at first.

NBC Universal is forming a video-centric online wellness network called the NBC Digital Health Network comprised initially of Healthline Networks, RightHealth and iVillage’s YourTotalHealth. NBC also announced it is rolling out new original webisodes of The Office and Heroes in July and will “vastly increase” its mobile streaming offerings. NBC Mobile has created more than 30 Wap-based sites as well as a portal offering IPhone-formatted episodes of NBC shows (yes, despite the ongoing feud with Apple.)
In other NBCU upfront news, mun2 put a multiplatform spin on its presentation announcing year-to-year increases of holamun2.com including +138% in unique visitors and +95% in total usage, according to Omniture. The network hopes to spark more cross platform creativity such as the magazine show HolaMun2.com: El Show, which became the highest rated premiere in the channel’s history. A new quiz show called You Said What? will poll users online and on mobile devices and utilize their response on air.
Buoyed by early success with shows such as Lunchbox, IFC.com is pledging to launch at least one new original web series a month throughout the summer with a line up of commissioned and acquired fare. IFC.com’s “cyber season” includes the Australian cult hit series, Wilfred about a pot-smoking dog; a third season of Young American Bodies, a co-production of IFC and Nerve.com; as well as Good Morning Internet!, a morning parody show from the creators of Hipster Olympics.
ESPN‘s new agreement to broadcast the U.S. Open Tennis Championships from 2009-2014 includes rights for ESPN360.com to simulcast all ESPN2’s coverage totaling more than 300 hours. ESPN.com and ESPN Mobile will also provide daily video news, highlights and commentary.


Google followed suit with MySpace and Facebook with a data portability initiative of its own. Friend Connect allows users to add social elements to their site and securely send personal profile data along to third party applications including friend lists, presence/status info etc. Google roasted marshmallows with developers at its third Campfire One event last night to brief them on the details. began offering news content available to the developer community via a non-commercial API offering called Reuters Spotlight. Last.fm launched a new video channel spotlighting interviews and concert footage of artists such as Moby, Santogold and Spoon. The CBS-owned music community site also announced a partnership with Lollapalooza, the granddaddy of indie music festivals. Last.fm will power Lolla Radio, the official online radio station of the festival featuring music from the entire line up of bands. They’re also offering an embeddable widget allowing fans to share the tracks.

Research in Motion is out to prove you can have just as much fun with a Blackberry as you can with an iPhone. The company took the wraps off of the Blackberry Bold due out this summer, featuring a brighter, higher res (480×320 pixel) screen, a faster web browser and more processing power to handle music, video and all the other good stuff the mobile web can offer. The Bold includes Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and GPS capabilities, enabling “geotagging” of photos.  It even syncs with users’ iTunes collections. RIM’s latest smart phone may not sport the elegant touch screen interface of the iPhone, but it should satisfy lots of corporate customers who have been begging their bosses to make the switch.

Cablevision officially swooped in an acquired 97% of Newsday from Tribune in a deal valued at $650 million, including prepaid rent for leases of certain properties. Cablevision is excited about the opportunity of bundling TV, print and online advertising together and offering its 2.3 million Optimum Online customers Newsday-related content.


Nielsen‘s Live Plus 3 ratings, which factor in time shifted viewings within 3 days of a show’s premiere, are increasingly reliant on the DVR segment of the equation, according to The New York Times. Many top rated broadcast shows post 20-25% ratings gain when DVR viewing is factored in and even more in urban areas where people work longer hours and have more to do at night. In LA, half the 18-49-year-old audience of shows like The Office and 30 Rock watch on a time shifted basis. With shows available online as free downloads, expect networks to follow in MTV’s footsteps and try to combine viewers across platforms for the benefit of advertisers. During its upfront presentation, MTV noted its top show The Hills is watched by 1 million viewers using a DVR and, all told, 32 million episodes and clips of the show have been viewed online.
Google extended its video market share lead to 38% thanks to the more than 4.3 billion videos viewed on YouTube during March, according to comScore’s Video Metrix. U.S. Internet users viewed 11.5 billion online videos during the month, representing a 13% gain versus February and a 64% gain versus March 2007.
