Cynopsis: Classified

Advantage

03/08/11

Good morning – it’s Tuesday, March 8, 2011, and this is your weekly issue of Cyn opsis: Classified Advantage!

What am I Doing Wrong?

Still unemployed?  Doing everything you can think of and nothing is working?  Let’s take another look.

The number one reason people don’t get jobs is because of their resume and/or cover letter.  If you’re not getting interviews, either you are unqualified for the job, or your resume/cover letter are eliminating you, almost before the process begins.  The silver lining is this problem can be fixed easier than any of the other possible roadblocks that lay ahead.  As I’ve mentioned before, go to a professional.  Instead of the company rejecting you because of your resume/cover letter, you eliminate the problem of having a resume/cover letter that eliminates you.

You get interviews but you don’t get the job.

This is a tougher fix but it can be dealt with.  First, tape yourself doing mock interviews, and again, with the meanest friend you have, go over the tape and look for anything off putting in mannerisms or body language.  Keep taping.  Keep looking.  If you’re still not getting the jobs, it’s time for a professional.  Life Coach, Career Coach, or Headhunter, you’ve done all you can do, it’s now time for some professional help.

You have a professionally written resume and cover letter, you’ve hired a Life Coach and still no results?  Are you aiming too high in your job search?  It’s time to look at lower paying jobs or perhaps even a change in industry.  There are many university classes on line for free that you can audit to determine interest in other areas.  While unemployed, it’s always a good idea to add to your education and skills, and is the best answer to the question, “What have you been doing since last employed?”

It’s tough to take a hard, honest look at yourself, but it’s better you do it before a hiring manager does.

Economic News

Private employers hired 220,000 new employees in February, the most since last April.  Unemployment rate fell to 8.9%, the lowest it has been in nearly two years.  However, the news wasn’t all good, retailers cut jobs last month, and state and local governments dealing with severe budget issues, cut 30,000 jobs.

~ ACTIONABLE EXPERT ADVICE ~

Destructive Criticism or Positive Feedback?

by Mary Kay Wedel and Diane Allen

Criticism, otherwise known as “Constructive Feedback”, is an essential component of managing and leading others.  While most people dread the thought of giving criticism, without it, the staff will not always meet expectations, and they will not learn and grow.  To overcome the stigma attached to giving criticism, a good culture to adopt is one where “learning is the name we give to our mistakes.”

It is important not to mix praise and criticism in the same conversation.  We have all experienced “lukewarm praise”, only to have it followed by the real purpose  a criticism.  Everything prior to the proverbial “but” is forgotten instantly.  As a result, both the praise and criticism are diminished.

The first challenge most people have when being criticized is to become defensive.  Consequently, they learn very little. So what tactics are best to turn destructive criticism into constructive feedback?

  • Always criticize the action, not the person. If it is personal, it is nearly always taken as a personal attack.
  • Give specifics and avoid the sweeping generalizations.  Make suggestions on what the person can do to improve.  The solutions are the building blocks of constructive feedback.
  • Invite the other person to join you in identifying ideas to improve.  Don’t make it a monologue where you make all the suggestions or tell the person exactly how to do the job.
  • Be assertive in your criticism in an honest, straightforward manner.  Avoid half-truths, gossip, and bringing in others’ names.   Be respectful, and uphold the person’s dignity.
  • Always criticize in a private place – never in front of others.  Public criticism will humiliate the person, and bystanders will often take sides.  Chances are, it won’t be your side!

When you turn giving criticism into learning experiences for you and the individual to whom you are giving feedback, it demonstrates great leadership.  You will gain respect and find that people actually listen and change.

Questions from our Readers
by
Mary Kay Wedel and Diane Allen

Are my educational credentials summarily keeping me locked out? Job descriptions often call for specific college degrees (communications, journalism, PR, etc.). It so happens that my degrees are in music and humanities. Even with more than 20 years of “comparable experience” in the work force, I fear I’m being disqualified by digital keyword search tools. I also suspect age discrimination, but that’s a whole other aggravating issue.

Companies requiring specific degrees are not looking for candidates with 20 years of experience and so you may just be over qualified.  It is understandable you may still be interested in positions that you are over qualified for because it’s been a tough job market. Whenever you can, send a hard copy of your resume with a strong cover letter, which can help you get around the issue of your resume being overlooked because of digital keyword searches. Use your cover letter to highlight the advantages of your experience and the opportunity for the company to acquire your experience because you are at a different place in your career. The reality is that age discrimination may be taking place and even though it is against the law, it can be very difficult to prove that age is the reason you are not being hired.

To what extent does “nonprofit” pigeonhole a candidate? I’ve been pursuing opportunities at a variety of industries, not just media companies and nonprofits but also in the corporate and private sectors. I firmly believe that my experiences and skills are easily carried over into those worlds. I network like crazy and use LinkedIn in all the right ways. But I have yet to land an interview outside media and nonprofit, even when the jobs seem perfectly compatible with what I know I can deliver.

When an applicant has extensive experience in any one industry, it can be difficult to break into another one. The best way to do so is to emphasize your past accomplishments with quantifiable information. Put the focus on what you did and how you solved problems, as opposed to listing duties, responsibilities and your current industry experience.  Whenever you can, demonstrate your knowledge of the industry in which you are trying to get an interview.  Research the industry to understand the current trends and issues. Write a compelling cover letter demonstrating your knowledge of the industry and how you can help solve their problems. Also keep in mind that networking within the new industry is a very good way of getting introductions which may very well lead to an interview and job offer.
