Cynopsis: DIGITAL

03/08/11

Good morning, it’s Tuesday, March 8, 2011, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.  If you would like to read this or any other Cynopsis edition online, click here

YouTube confirmed its purchase of Next New Networks and said the online studio, which has racked up over 2 billion views and 6 million subscribers to date, will play an important role in expanding its partner developers program. As part of the “YouTube Next” program, NNN will act as an incubation studio, working with independent producers to help hone their craft and gather bigger audiences, according to YouTube Director of Global Content Operations Tom Pickett, who is heading the program. The number of partners making over $1,000 a month is up 300% since the beginning of 2010 and there are now “hundreds” of partners making six figures a year, he wrote in a blog post.

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

MSNBC’s TODAY show website featured a one-time-only, live web show yesterday hosted by Kathie Lee Gifford and Hoda Kotb that aired during the traditional TV broadcast. The webcast, which viewers were directed to by TODAY hosts Matt Lauer and Meredith Vieira, provided behind-the-scenes stories and background info complementing the telecast. Viewers were also encouraged to post questions and feedback on today’s Facebook page and via the #TODAY hashtag on Twitter.

ESPN3.com announced it will stream 18.5 hours of live coverage of the Winter X Games Europe running March 16-18 from Tignes, France. The event will also be televised live for the first time this year on ESPN and ESPN 2 in the U.S.

G4’s pop internet comedy series Web Soup is gearing up for a third season starting March 30, with more “best of worst” features and a new investigative segment exploring stories outside the studio. Chris Hardwick will continue to host.

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

Universal
became the first major film studio to license feature films to the online clip service AnyClip. The company tags and indexes movies into searchable clips so that they come up on the search engines of sites such as IMDB.com or Hulu it plans to sign as partners, per THR. AnyClip’s propriety tagging capabilities enables consumers to search by specific quotes, actors, objects, locations and scenes from full-length motion pictures. The company makes money by directing viewers who click on “Get the movie” to iTunes, Amazon or Netflix to purchase or view discovered titles.

The latest company-sponsored web series starring Hollywood talent premiered yesterday on IAC’s comedy site CollegeHumor. Always Open with Dave Koechner, sponsored by Denny’s, will feature one-on-one tete-a-tetes between David and celebrity guests in the booth of a Denny’s restaurant. Jason Bateman, whose digital studio DumbDumb is producing the show with Ben Silverman’s Electus studio, stars in the first episode. Upcoming guests include Sarah Silverman, Amy Poehler, Will Forte and Kristin Bell.

EW.com is offering a series of rewards through a partnership with entertainment-themed social network GetGlue.com. Readers who check in to items featured on EW’s ‘Must List’ via GetGlue can unlock virtual and physical stickers, which can then be redeemed for exclusive curated content from the editors of Entertainment Weekly.

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

Cablevision announced an agreement with GroupM to deploy addressable 30 sec. ads from 5 different brand advertisers across the MSO’s entire 3 million household footprint – the industry’s first commercial iTV campaign. Set-top data enabled marketers to deliver different ads to specific groups of homes targeted by general demographic info during Q4 2010. Targeted TV technology firm Visible World helped advertisers reach relevant households by matching age groups and ethnic make-up with the appropriate ad, promising that personal subscriber info remained anonymous. The campaign sub-divided the 30 second spots across more than 25 cable networks.

Internet telephony giant Skype will begin introducing advertising to its user base this week as it moves toward an expected IPO. Ad sales partnerships with Meebo in the U.S., Ad2One in the UK and Ströer Interactive in Germany will help find takers for large format interactive ads such as an expandable “home” unit with “Click & Call” functionality or social networking sharing capability. Skype says it will not barrage users with pop up ads during their conversations and that users will be able to close the banners.

Advocate Answers is a new social commerce app from word of mouth marketing company Zuberance that enables a company’s Brand Advocates to answer prospects’ questions at pivotal times in the purchase cycle.

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

Google acquired U.K.-based comparison shopping site BeatThatQuote.com for 37.7 million pounds or $61 million. The site enables users to compare prices across multiple online outlets for insurance, financial services, legal services and utilities including TV and internet.

HarperCollins
‘ 26 checkout limit imposed on library eBook lending took affect yesterday, under protest from a growing number of libraries. A consortium of libraries in Massachusetts has already voted to suspend purchases of any new HarperCollins books for its digital catalog, per Library Journal. A task force appointed by the American Library Association is convening this week in Washington to address the question of equitable access to electronic content.

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

Google’s Android platform continues to take market share away from RIM’s BlackBerry in the U.S., according to ComScore, pulling ahead of the platform for the first time with a leading 31.2% share of all smartphone subscribers as of the end of Jan. 2011. 65.8 million people in the U.S. owned smartphones during the three months ending in January 2011, up 8% from the preceding three-month period. Microsoft’s Windows 7 platform continues to sputter, dropping to 8% of the smartphone market.

An ease in pricing and a range of new models will help 3DTV’s penetrate some 15 million homes in the U.S. by the end of next year, according to a new report from Futuresource Consulting. A lack of 3D content, however, will continue to prevent the feature from becoming a must have for the time being.

~ GADGETS & APPS ~

Popular podcast distribution app AudioPress released an update to its iPhone app, adding the ability to share shows and stations via text message, email, Facebook and Twitter.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

AOL, which completed its $315 million purchase of The Huffington Post yesterday, announced the addition of six new hires to its reporting team, including

  • Yahoo’s Michael Calderone, named Senior Media Reporter
  • the NYTimes’ Trymaine Lee, coming aboard as Senior Reporter
  • the NY Daily News’ Michael McAuliffe, named Senior Congressional Reporter and
  • The Daily’s Jon Ward, tapped as Senior Political Reporter

Broadcast Interactive Media named TAP Media’s Mike Schuch Jr. hired as VP/Local Sales. The company also promoted Herb Skoog to SVP/Operations and Mick Rinehart to SVP/Products and Data Services.

~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

A new independent site developed by a University professor and his students in Singapore called Mobilewalla launched yesterday as a multiplatform search, discovery and analytics engine for smartphone apps. Supporting Apple, Android, BlackBerry and Windows 7, the site is the process of building a database of available free and paid apps that can be sorted by category, developer, “hotness” factor and keyword. Its secret sauce is a set of proprietary scoring algorithms that computes user-rated scores for individual apps. The Developer Reputation Score (DRS) will crunch user ratings by developer. Similar math awards a “Mobilewalla Score” (MWS) to each app to determine how fast it is rising on various marketplaces; the MWS rating determines how high each app appears in each category. Navigate over to the Arcade Game section under iPhone and you’ll find the iconic Angry Birds the top choice, followed by a couple of free games – Pac-Man Lite from Namco and Touch Hockey from FlipSide5.
