Good morning. It’s Tuesday, March 6, 2012, and this is your weekly issue of Cynopsis: Classified Advantage!
There is no way around it, being unemployed, or even under employed STINKS!
The problems that are associated with both are staggering, serious, they are real and without a lot of work, they simply will not disappear.
However, there are things you can do to relieve some of the pressure of being unemployed.
Most important, work to get a job, like it’s your job. Work everyday to change your situation. Create new resumes tailored for a particular company or industry. Scour company websites and this publication for career opportunities. Update all your materials, but this is the obvious stuff.
What about the less obvious…
LEARN SOMETHING NEW! Take the time to learn new software, a language, a writing class, public speaking, accounting, management, administration, anything – but learn.
If you live near a college, ask about auditing classes, not for credit, too much money, but to keep up with the latest technology and nearly as important, terminology. Both will be invaluable at your next interview. And having a second or third language is a tremendous selling point in any interview. One HR professional told me that anyone fluent in a second language, automatically got an interview. This skill cannot be over emphasized.
Keep a schedule, do your work, clean your house, walk the dog, read a book and perhaps most importantly, get outside for some exercise and fun. Being unemployed, your house can become a cell of sorts, and your prison garb is a tee shirt and pajama bottoms. It’s easy to fall into a vortex of self pity, spending your days watching soaps instead of using them. It’s easy at this time to think the world is unfair, and you are one of its victims.
It’s at these times, the toughest times, that you need to be your strongest, you need to be your best.
With each positive action you take, the unemployment blues, lighten just a little bit. Work hard at getting a new job, work hard at keeping your home and yourself in good shape. And during these times, it is so important to take time to have fun. Never feel guilty about having some fun, it is an absolute necessity. Fun doesn’t have to be expensive, smiles and laughs are free.
Being unemployed stinks, but how much, is up to you.

Conducting a job search, especially over an extended period of time, can be a lonely and frustrating experience. And it is little consolation that there are millions of others out there in the same boat as you are.
But you don’t need to go it alone.
There are dozens of resources out there that can help you enhance your job search efforts while providing the emotional support you need to get through this difficult time.
Here are just a few:
Tap into Networking and Support Groups.
You’ll find dozens of networking and support groups online. Logon to job-hunt.org for list for each state. Then click on the name of the group to visit their website.
Take Advantage of Government Services.
Logon to servicelocator.com to find links to local government services that provide job search training and support to those who have lost their jobs.
Join an Online Chat Group.
You’ll also find numerous chat groups online where you can share stories and get support from others going through the job search process.
Join the Social Networking Crowd.
You can find and network with people with common interests via social networking, such as Linkedin and Facebook.
Form Your Own Support Group.
You can do this online or in person. Tap into your personal network to find others who are in the market for a job. Agree to meet regularly to share stories, pass along possible job leads, use each other as a sounding board, etc.
Find a Mentor.
Seek out an experienced and trusted friend or former associate and ask them to be a mentor to you during this period. Someone who works in HR, for example, would be an excellent resource who knows the ins and outs of the hiring process, what makes for an effective resume, etc.
Consider an Executive Coach.
Although this can be a more costly option, this investment could pay off in finding a better paying and more personally satisfying job in less time compared to “fending for yourself.”
Whichever approach you choose, it’s important to stay positive during your job search period. So when you associate with other job-seekers, stay away from those who are negative or are always complaining.
A study conducted earlier this year of MBA graduates found that those who were optimistic got job offers more quickly and once they were hired were more likely to be promoted than their less optimistic peers.
Bottom line: stay positive and good things are more likely to happen to you!

I feel that my job search is somewhat haphazard, is there a formula or a method that you would suggest?
Each job search is unique; however, there are a few basic components everyone needs, to ensure their job search process is as efficient and effective as possible.
Treat your job search like a job. If you’re unemployed, your job search IS your job. By 8 a.m. each day, you should be at your desk performing this job. Let others in your home know you are not available, unless it’s an emergency, during ‘business hours.’
Track everything. Create a spreadsheet with information regarding each job you apply for, when you submitted your resume, who the resume was submitted to, and a follow-up date. Include columns for interviews and notes. Be sure to include how you learned about the position.
Set up automatic searches. Many of the larger job search engines offer the ability to set up automatic searches for new positions that fit your needs.
Use a daily calendar to keep on track. At the end of each day, look at your spreadsheet notes and write down any follow-up calls you need to make the next day. Include a to-do list for the job search researches to check on a daily basis as well, to make sure you’re hitting each resource every day.
With persistence and organization, you’ll find your job search efforts will be far more effective and less haphazard.
Outside of a resume and cover letter, is there something else I should be doing to get an interview. Is an unsolicited call ever a good idea?
Your resume and cover letter have one job to get you an interview. If your cover letter and resume aren’t getting you the interviews you feel you should be getting, then I would strongly suggest revisiting these two critical pieces of the job search process.
Your cover letter should be customized for each and every position. It should mention all of the hot buttons the company listed in their job posting that you have. When a hiring manager reads your cover letter, they should be salivating, thinking you are exactly the candidate they’ve been looking for. Your resume is your “cleanup hitter,” bringing that interview home by expanding on how perfect you are for the position, by emphasizing the skills you have that the company wants.
In some instances, even a well-crafted resume and cover letter aren’t enough. If you’re certain your cover letter and resume are well-written, then a follow-up call a week after you’ve sent in a resume would be alright, to express that you’re still very interested in the position and would love to discuss it further. Unless you’re instructed to call a second time, however, limit your calls to one.

Effective immediately, the US and UK-based independent television production and distribution group, DCD Media plc named Sammy Nourmand as CEO and also promoted David Green to Executive Chairman. Crown Media Family Networks, consisting of Hallmark Channel and Hallmark Movie Channel, named Cheryl Grimley as VP/Advertising Sales, Western Region and Shelly Bayne to the role as Director/Ad Sales Marketing. Cheryl will manage all facets of advertising sales in the Western territory for both networks while reporting to Chris Ward, SVP/Ad Sales, Midwest Region and Cindy Kelly, SVP/National Ad Sales and Sponsorships. Cheryl is based in Studio City. Shelly will create and implement marketing communication and advertising campaigns with the goal to spur ad sales revenue. Shine USA bolstered its creative ranks with the hire of Paul Franklin to the newly-created position of EVP/Programming, Shine USA. Franklin will relocate from Shine Australia to Shine USA’s headquarters in Los Angeles, CA, to assume responsibility for the creative oversight of Shine USA’s unscripted slate of series that include The Biggest Loser, MasterChef and Tabatha Takes Over. Franklin will report to Company President Eden Gaha.
David Polinchock takes on the new role as Director of the AT&T AdWorks Lab in New York. David will supervise the daily operations of the Lab while reporting to Maria Mandel Dunsche, VP/Marketing and Media Innovation at AdWorks.
JWT tapped Michael Byrne as CFO of JWT New York to head all financial operations for the agency’s lead office. Michael will report to Nick Read, CFO, JWT North America. Michael joins JWT from McCann Erickson New York where he served at CFO.
Valerie Watts Meraz was hired by Turner Entertainment Networks (TEN) to become VP/Program Acquisitions for TEN and the Young Adults & Kids Media group (AYAKM). NBCUniveral’s Integrated Media group added four to its senior leadership team by offering expanded promotions to each executive: Hilary Smith becomes SVP/Communications and Integrated Media Marketing, reporting to John Shea, CMO/EVP of Integrated Media, Nick Lehman, President/Digital, NBCUniversal E&DN/IM and Cameron Blanchard, EVP/Communications, NBCUniversal E&DN/IM; Bari Komitee promoted to VP/Marketing and Events, Integrated Media, reporting to Hilary Smith; Lenore Moritz upped to VP/Communications, Integrated Media and iVillage, reporting to Hilary Smith and to Jodi Kahn, President, iVillage; and Craig Coleman boosted to VP/Partnership Marketing, Integrated Media, reporting to John Shea.
Current host of CBS Sports’ The NFL Today, James Brown was named Special Correspondent for CBS News. James will contribute original reporting on stories and will appear on various CBS News broadcasts. He begins this Saturday on CBS This Morning: Saturday.
ABC News promoted James Goldston to SVP/Content and Development to oversee ABC News’ programs and executive producers. James will further develop new shows for broadcast, cable and other distribution avenues. Most recently, James was Executive Producer of Nightline and for the last year was Senior Executive Producer of Good Morning America. Additionally, ABC News advances Tom Cibrowski to Senior Executive Producer of GMA. Tom has been with GMA since 2002 and a producer for ABC News’ bureaus in Los Angeles, Atlanta and Seattle.
Mandi Dyner was hired by Spotlight Cinema Networks as VP/Advertising Sales Western Region based at company headquarters in Santa Monica. Mandi joins from Outcast Media where she was VP/Sales.
Chris Walters was tapped by The Weather Channel Companies (TWCC) in the newly-minted position as COO. Chris joins TWCC from Bloomberg L.P. where he served as COO of the Bloomberg Industry Verticals Group. At TWCC, Chris will supervise the company’s technology, finance, legal and human resources teams. He,, w, ill report to David Kenny, TWCC Chairman/CEO.
Relocating to Los Angeles, Otto Padron will oversee KWHY-TV as President/COO of Meruelo Media Holdings Inc. Otto previously was VP/Programming and Promotions for Univision. In his new role, Otto will also be the Executive In Charge of the daily operations and administration at KWHY-TV.
Spanish-language news network CNN en Espanol named Willie Lora as News Director. Willie will move to Atlanta to take on his new position where he becomes the network’s primary news content executive. Prior to this appointment, Willie was with the network as Washington, D.C. Bureau Chief.
