Michael Eisner’s Vuguru will debut its next big original web series, indie rock-themed mockumentary The All-For-Nots, next week simultaneously online, on mobile devices and on HDNet, reports The New York Times. Vuguru will make the series, sponsored by Chrysler and Expedia, available on outlets such as YouTube in the U.S., but it will restrict access to it in foreign markets to protect its syndication value.
 

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

 
AOL announced plans to launch 12 new websites in the next 6 months to bolster traffic and ad revenue. AOL-owned sites attracted 109.4 million unique visitors in Jan., placing it 4th behind portals Yahoo, Google and Microsoft according to comScore.
 
NBCU’s iVillage.com, NBC Olympics and sponsor Johnson & Johnson will produce a series of webisodes showcasing the family lives of 8 Beijing Summer Olympic hopefuls. The Family Room series also contains social networking components including a “share your shout out” graffiti wall where users can type words of encouragement.
 
Nielsen Business Media’s The Hollywood Reporter launched THR-Asia.com, an English-language website covering the entertainment industries of China, Hong Kong, India, Japan, Korea, Singapore, Thailand and other regions. 
 
A trailer for Paramount‘s long-awaited new Indian Jones movie racked up more than 200 million views worldwide during the first week of its release, the company told the AP. The studio built hype for the trailer by premiering it on Good Morning America and streaming it exclusively online at IndianaJones.com and Yahoo! Movies before showcasing it in theaters.
 
Soap Opera Digest is launching a suite of casual games today on its website today, powered by game developer Arkadium.
 
TVN Entertainment signed multi-year deals to offer VOD programming from the Gospel Music Channel, Expo TV and The Sportsman Channel.
 
Overbuilder RCN agreed to add ION Media Network’s kids-themed qubo network to its Chicago line-up of digital channels.
 
Hearst Magazines Digital Media and Si TV announced a new partnership to co-produce a trio of quinceanera-themed videos for Hearst’s MisQuinceMag.com.
 

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

 
William Morris Agency and VC firms Accel Partners and Venrock are teaming with AT&T to provide seed money for digital media start-ups. The Joint Fund will be managed by Los Angeles-area angel investor Richard Wolpert, former President of Disney Online and Chief Strategy Officer of RealNetworks.
 
Nine Inch Nails followed in Radiohead’s footsteps and launched their latest album, the 36-track instrumental “Ghosts I-IV,” as a free download (the first 9 tracks anyway.) The band also offers several pay options. For $5 you get all 36 digital tracks and a 40 page PDF; the $10 set comes with a two CDs and booklet; $75 buys you a data and Blu-ray DVD and the $300 “ultra-deluxe limited edition package” includes two numbered prints signed by Trent Renzor himself. Excessive traffic had crashed the site as of yesterday, but Amazon’s DRM free MP3 store has the $5 version.
 
Independent production studio Judge-Belshaw Entertainment, Inc. formed Sticky Traffic Studios, specializing in short form comedy videos for online distribution. The company has been producing video jokes for It Tastes Funny.com.
 
Attention Span Media signed a deal to distribute its Dorm Life web series through mobile phones by using camera phone photo/video sharing service Radar.net. Radar users can sign up for the Dorm Life channel to receive clips and photos from the series thrice weekly.
 
Digital entertainment company ZVUE Corporation has added the SomaGirls.TV channel to the ZVUE Network.   Aimed at females 15-25, SomaGirls.TV features commercial and user-generated pop culture, celebrity, fashion videos and other entertainment related content.
 

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

 
Amazon launched a video widget program allowing Amazon Associates affiliates to earn referral fees for video views they accumulate on their websites. The site welcomes comedic, topical and how-to videos and provides 19 different templates to chose from, including a widget for its Unbox video service.
 
Male-skewing Break Media acquired business news and financial humor website Wall Street Fighter.com.
 

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

 
DoubleClick, still awaiting EU approval in its merger with Google, is forming a vertical ad network called the DoubleClick Revenue Center to offer advertisers a more unified structure for their online ad buys. The move will place it in direct competition with companies such as Adify, which provides a technology platform enabling publishers such as NBC Universal and The Washington Post to build their own ad networks around specific categories.
 

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

 
NBC Universal announced a major shakeup of its digital, sales and research ranks:

  • Salil Mehta, President/Business Operations, Strategy and Development, will take the reigns of NBC’s Digital Media team, replacing Beth Comstock who will return to head up marketing for GE. George Kliavkoff, NBCU’s Chief Digital Officer, will report to Salil.
  • Mike Pliot, President/Sales & Marketing, will add oversight of the Research Department. President of Research Alan Wurtzel will report to Mike.
  • Jeff Gaspin, President & COO/ Universal Television Group will take over the reigns of women’s portal iVillage on an interm basis. iVillage will now be part of a “virtual women’s network” which includes Bravo Media and Oxygen Media. All 3 Presidents will report to Jeff Zucker, President & CEO of NBC Universal.
  • Deborah Fine, President/iVillage Properties, will report to Jeff on an interim basis.

 
Gorilla Nation hired former Shopzilla manager Alex Godelman to serve as VP/Technology. He will report to Christophe Louvion, CTO of Gorilla Nation.
 


~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

 
As the Democratic candidates head into crunch time today, both hope to get a viral boost from web video. NBC.com‘s Saturday Night Live minisite has last weekend’s SNL mock debate and Senator Clinton’s surprise response in front of her hometown crowd. (Now that NBC’s clips, also available on Hulu.com, are embeddable elsewhere – she should get even more laughs.) Meanwhile hip hop musician Will.i.am released another celebrity-driven Obama tribute, We are the Ones on grassroots advocacy site dipdive.com and YouTube. Sen. Obama has also been spending heavily on embeddable video ads on sites such as the Akron Beacon Journal’s Ohio.com and the Houston Chronicle’s Chron.com on a scale not yet seen by political candidates on the web.
 
Correction: GE’s New Media focused Peacock Equity Fund is not an investor in Popsugar and WorldWideBiggies as mentioned yesterday. The fund’s current investments do include Adify, Firebrand, Healthline, IGA Worldwide and Trion World Network.
