Cynopsis: Classified
Advantage
03.30.10
Good morning – it’s Tuesday, March 30, 2010, and this is your weekly issue of Cyn opsis: Classified Advantage! This edition includes the top job listings in the Television, Media and Ad Agency markets, professional development advice from national experts, your Q & A’s with our experts, and a summary of executive moves among top companies.
So you’ve heard all about social networking, your children are busy on their phones tweeting or on the computer posting their thoughts or having video chats on Facebook. And you don’t have a clue what it’s all about. While being no expert on the ever changing social networking landscape, I can at least get you started in the right direction. This week we start with…
Creating a Facebook page is extremely easy and intuitive. All you need is a valid email address and at least one good photograph (not absolutely necessary but you really should have one) that shows you’re a professional.
Inviting friends to your page can be a double edged sword. While they can help spread the word about your employment needs, they can also comment on anything they want. Anything.
“Hey John, remember the time you drank all those tequila shooters and started to dirty dance on the bar with that stuffed Kangaroo? That was awesome dude! I’ll be posting the photos soon.”
Thankfully, in the profile information under privacy settings, you can click a box that doesn’t allow anybody to post on your page. Depending on your friends, this may be the prudent thing to do.
A word of caution — read through the privacy settings carefully. Unless you make the proper changes to your privacy settings, everything you post on Facebook (including Profile changes, adding photos, etc.) will show up on your Wall and on your friends’ FB newsfeed home pages. That may not be your intent, so read thru these settings carefully.
After you have invited your friends, join Facebook Groups related to your industry and actively participate. Offer valuable content, respond to questions, ask to become friends with some of the people in the group. Start conversations, add photos and post links relevant to the group.
You can also create your own group related to your profession or your job hunting journeys. Starting a group on Facebook is ridiculously easy. “I Love Modern Family” is a group I started – about 30 seconds ago. I was prompted to customize the group’s setting and was able to invite all my friends with a click of one button. Even without inviting anyone, the post of my new group is seen on the newsfeed of all my connections. Within the group I, or anyone else who joins, can post thoughts, videos, photos, start discussions and create events for the group.
A Facebook Event is as easy to set up as a group is, but generally used for a specific happening at a specific time and place. Events are not confined to this description, an event can be a pursuit such as training for a marathon much like a Facebook group, but groups offer more flexibility and feedback compared to an event.
Facebook offers an invaluable service that can take the place of a personal website, offer a variety of networking methods, and gives you the tools for some serious marketing.
And it’s free.
State of the Economy
The Commerce Department reported yesterday that consumer spending increased by .03 percent in February. While the increase was modest, perhaps due to all the bad weather in the East, it is still seen as a positive step towards recovery.
Incomes were flat for February, which may suggest consumer spending will slow in upcoming months.
Consumer spending has also been tampered by high unemployment, stagnate wages and unusually demanding credit terms. While consumer spending has been the catalyst in most economic recoveries, this recovery depends more on businesses spending money and hiring new employees.
Analyst predict the economy will expand by a mere 2.5-3.0 percent first quarter, as compared to the more robust 5.6% last quarter 2009.

Have your stories ready
by Michael Pollock
A lot of people are out of work right now. And many of them are looking for the same jobs you are looking for.
So this is a competition. This is not just about: “look at all my wonderful qualifications and experience obviously I should get this position.” Sadly that is not enough. The truth is that many of the people who are after that job have wonderful qualifications and experience too.
So a litany of how you are a team player and innovative and a good manager and raised revenue blah blah – will not separate you from the crowd.
I spent the morning reading resumes to fill a position. Frankly it is exhausting. Many of them made it so very hard for me to figure out what they did. Many of them were just too long. Though I find I forgive the second page if the opening summary is powerful. Because then, since my attention has been grabbed, I do want to see their career trajectory and I am interested to learn what supports the claims that impressed me from the outset.
I am a busy reviewer and I know what I am looking for. If the summary does not give me a clear understanding of why the candidate might be the one then I will barely skim the rest of the pages. I make three sorts: “No “, “Maybe ” and “Probably Should Meet”. In the current environment, if you get on the No pile and the cover letter alone could get you there then it’s all over. I will review the Maybes after I’ve been all through, and sometimes one or two get transferred to the Should Meet group. But there are so many submissions that usually there are four or five that make it to the top group and I don’t need any more.
Okay, I know this sounds pretty callous. But really, what do you want from me? It’s your job to sell yourself; and to do it simply, briefly and powerfully. Don’t clutter the resume and don’t pad it with fluff, because the reviewer has too much else to do, and his head is swimming from all the similar verbiage. So it is not just about saying that you are good for this job it is about differentiating yourself from all the others and being in some way particularly distinguished or interesting.
It is very competitive. There will be many well-qualified candidates, but only one will win.

A CYNOPSIS MESSAGE FROM NAB SHOW
Questions from our Readers
Answered by Michael Pollock
I read your article with interest. I have a hybrid background of another sort: journalism/writing, law, and more recently radio and television expert. Due to the overwhelming downturn in publishing and journalism, I’m trying to shift from journalism to broadcast media. Can Michael suggest a way for me to frame my skill set so as to open more job opportunities? Ideally I’d like to write for, host, or otherwise be part of a team working on a show in either radio or television. Any advice would be most welcome.
You will find it easier if you don’t think of broadcast media as one sector. There are a million subject silos and sectors within broadcast, so you should frame yourself in terms of your expertise first and then see where that fits into broadcast channels. Given your rich background, you must have very specific subject knowledge, and also access to people who would make you valuable to the appropriate channel. You should find your own value and emphasize it so that your goal is refined. It could be framed as “… part of a team working on a legal show…” or “…an investigative journalism show…” You should then target the producers and companies who focus on your chosen sector and where your knowledge is going to mean something. So you will be using your strengths to get your foot in the door. Do also consider online channels in your search set. There are many outlets for news and information videos on the Internet many of them sponsored by brands pharmaceuticals and such.
The current philosophy in applying for jobs is to tailor your resume to the specific job. This make total sense, however, leaving off positions that don’t directly relate can cause large gaps in dates and omit some of your most recent experience. How should this be handled?
First a presentation trick: if you list your jobs by year and are not specific as to months then for instance a gap from February 2008 to November 2009 could well disappear.
But maybe you don’t have to leave things off. First you should try and identify an aspect of what you did or experienced at the apparently irrelevant job that can be presented to actually strengthen your case. For an extreme example: if you took a year out to work in your father’s shoe store you probably gained invaluable experience in selling or in fashion changes or something that might make you that much more valuable to the job you are going after. So don’t throw anything out until you are sure it will hurt you. You should present everything you have done in a way that demonstrates that you are unique and special. The apparently unrelated job may look at first sight like a lemon but do try and find the lemonade inside it!
But yes, you should avoid gaps – or plug them with something. Were you working on a personal project or volunteering at a nonprofit or traveling? These could all be completely laudable explanations for not having a formal job for a period of time and may even strengthen your case.
