This is What I Want by Snarky McHeadhunter

Why do you want me?  Because I can get you a job, I can make you more money, I know of jobs that will never be advertised, anywhere.  And I don’t charge you a thing.    So when I tell you what I want, listen.

I want a chronological resume, anything else is tossed.  Why? Because I don’t have the time to figure out the dates and order of employment.  Plus, if I take you on as a client, I will need all the dates for our data base.  Functional resume equals an unread, trashed resume.  That doesn’t mean we won’t present companies with a functional resume, but when you send them to me, make it chronological.

A resume longer than two pages gets less than two seconds of my attention.  I know you are a big shot but so am I, and my time is my money.  I’ll hear all about your great accomplishments later in an interview.  Just give my the highlights Sparky.

I want to read about quantifiable achievements, items I can bullet point to my clients.  Their time is money too.  I will toss your resume before I spend time dressing it up.

Use keywords that resonate with the potential employers.  How can you determine these?  They’re in the employment notices.  They write them in their ads.  They tell you.

Here is another problem you may encounter.  Emails can sometimes change the format of attachments.  Here is a hint, place your resume in the body of the email as well as an attachment.  That way I can get to it as quickly as possible.  Don’t think those seconds matter, I get 200 emails a day with resumes.  Everything matters.

Why should I devote my time to make you more money?  You better answer that question quickly.

Hey Mac lovers, I get it, you love your computers while the rest of the world hates theirs.  But if you send me your resume in a Mac specific format, I’ll trash it.  Get over it. Get Word.

When I open my emails, and it says, Dear Recruiter or anything else other than my name, it’s tossed.  If you don’t have the time or the intelligence to find and then write my name in the salutation, I have no time for you.  And if I get a whiff that your email is part of a mass mailing, buh bye.

If you do send me your resume as an attachment but write nothing in the body of the email, how rude.  Talk to you, never.

We need some ground rules here, I am not your buddy, I am not your pal, I don’t want to hear your sob stories.  You are a potential commission to me, you are my business.  So listen to me as if I was your boss, and if you do, we can help each other.

Good Economic News

Managerial jobs got a boost this month with three out of four managerial levels showing significant increases.  The CareerCast.com/JobSerf Employment Index indicated that only Director Level jobs fell in February by a modest 3 points.  However, C-Level positions increased by 10 points to 70, Manager Level increased 16 points to 89 and VP Level jumped an incredible 29 points to 77.

Geographically, the Northeast has shown the greatest recruitment activity while the West still lags behind the rest of the country.  The total index has improved by 33.8 points from February 2009.

Many of the nation’s smaller cities had the most significant improvement, led by Cincinnati (+39%) and Cleveland (+37%).  Tony Lee, publisher of CareerCast.com said, “The Index shows the beginning of a hiring rebound.”

~ ACTIONABLE EXPERT ADVICE ~
The Time to Start Networking is when you
Already have a Job
by Joel Garfinkle

How important is networking to finding a new job? According to the U.S. Department of Labor, only five percent of people find jobs through the open market, usually through help wanted ads, internet job boards and so on. Another 24 percent find jobs by contacting companies directly while 23 percent are successful thanks to employment agencies, headhunters and college career-services offices. The remaining 48 percent — almost one of every two job-seekers — find employment through referrals from others.

That’s why networking should be your number one job-search strategy. This article about career planning provides you with the key networking tips while you are currently working.

But, even if you have a job, I encourage you to develop your personal networks and networking skills. In today’s troubling economy, no one’s job is totally secure. If you should suddenly find yourself unemployed, having a well-established network will give you a distinct advantage over your competitors.

Here are five easy ways to jumpstart your networking efforts:

Join professional organizations.
According to Katharine Hansen, author of the book “A Foot in the Door: Networking Your Way into the Hidden Job Market,” professional organizations are the number one venue for networking.

Volunteer.
Hansen says volunteer work is the second most effective way to expand your network. Plus, you’ll gain the satisfaction from helping those in need in your community

Be active in other organizations or activities that expose you to new people.
This could be your church, your school’s alumni association, local chamber of commerce, service clubs like Rotary or Kiwanis, Toastmasters, a book club, bowling league or bridge club. Avoid only socializing with people you work with. Constantly strive to expand your circle of friends and acquaintances.

Religiously keep names, titles and contact numbers of people you meet.
Even if it’s a one-time phone conversation with a vendor, that person might someday provide you with a valuable job lead. So keep track of contact and other information that may help you reconnect with the person in the future. For example, make a note on his/her business card that reminds you that he/she is “active in animal rights work, daughter JoAnne attending Harvard Law, etc.”

Look for ways to keep in touch and to build a positive impression with people you meet.
For example, when an acquaintance wins an award or is mentioned favorably in an industry trade journal, send him/her a note or email of congratulations. Or forward a sales lead, news article or web site that you think would be of interest to that person. He or she will be more inclined to help you if you have gone out of your way to help them.

~ ASK THE EXPERTS ~
Questions from our Readers
Answered by Joel Garfinkle

I’ve been with a media company for a little less than a year, and had a very positive performance review last month. During the review, I said I felt I could handle more workload, and my boss seemed to agree. Yesterday I found out that a co-worker (with the same job title) had gotten promoted– only a year from her last promotion. She earned it, but I’m wondering how to ask for the a similar opportunity to prove myself. I feel I should have been more aggressive in my initial review. Her promotion is unrelated to my own performance, and I’d like to ask for larger-scale projects and work without seeming like I’m jealous. Any suggestions on how to handle this?

If you want to get promoted, you need to share your aspirations with your boss. You can start by discussing the “more workload” conversation you had previously and then make it clear that you want to get promoted. Don’t be shy. Ask your boss what it will take to get promoted. The more clarity you have on the specific steps to get promoted, the easier it will be for you to take action and achieve your goals. Over the next three to six months, schedule time (every 2-4 weeks) to discuss your progress. .

Here are some questions you should ask:

  • Why kind of data or information can I provide you to document my progress?
  • What do I need to be doing over the next 3-6 months to get the promotion?
  • What larger-scale projects can I own right now?
  • How does the promotion process work?
  • Do I need to increase my visibility with other decision-makers to improve my chances for promotion?
  • Be aggressive in following-up.

A friend told me to buy an expensive looking watch for job interviews. I currently own an Ironman watch. Can a watch truly hurt my chances of getting hired? What about my belt or shoes?

The key issue here is how your appearance affects the job interview. The old cliche is true: first impressions are lasting ones. When the employer first meets you, they are judging the first thing they see  your personal appearance. It’s extremely important that you don’t do anything that would undermine how you are viewed.

Before a job interview, I advise my clients to write down three adjectives to describe how they want to be perceived. For example, one client listed “professional,” “experienced” and “energetic.”

Everything they say or do during the interview should reinforce these adjectives, INCLUDING every aspect of their appearance. From their shoes to their belt to their haircut. And, yes, even their watch. (A “Mickey Mouse” watch doesn’t exactly say “professional,” does it?)

Here are some other things to consider:

  • Dress appropriately for the type of company and position you are interviewing with.
  • Firm handshake.
  • Avoid anything that brings too much attention to your outfit.
  • Clean shaven face.
  • Minimize the amount of skin showing.
  • Eliminate unusual hairstyles.
  • Tattoos and body piercings covered or removed.

Regarding the Ironman watch, I doubt it’s a “show-stopper.” It’s not unusual for someone to wear that type, unless, of course, you’re interviewing for chairman of the board. But, if you have any doubts, borrow another watch from a friend or relative.
