Online auction site eBay announced that it is acquiring King of Prussia, Pa-based ecommerce and interactive marketing company GSI Commerce in deal worth $2.4 billion. The acquisition, the next step in eBay’s plan to remake itself into more of an ecommerce platform, will enable eBay to expand its PayPal online wallet service to the world of brick and mortar retail. (GSI already services many of the largest retail brands.) As part of the deal, eBay will divest 100% of GSI’s licensed sports merchandise business and 70% of its ShopRunner and Rue La La chains.
 

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

 
Warner Bros. has added 5 more movie titles to its Facebook movie rental service: the first two Harry Potter movies, “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone” andHarry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets”; Christopher Nolan’s summer hit “Inception”; recent romantic comedy “Life As We Know It;” and kids movie “Yogi Bear,” just released on DVD and Blu-ray on March 22. The three newer releases are renting for 40 Facebook credits ($4) for a 48-hour window, $1 more than what “The Dark Knight: has been going for on the social networking platform. Warner Bros. is also in advanced talks to acquire online movie ratings service Flixter (which also owns movie review site Rotten Tomatoes) for as much as $90 million in cash, according to reports initiated by AllThingsD.
 
Netflix signed a new multi-year licensing agreement with Paramount in Canada that will add over 350 new titles to its Watch Instantly service north of the border, from newer titles such as “The Last Airbender” and “Iron Man 2” to classics such as “The African Queen” and Billy Wilder’s “Sabrina.” 
 
Amazon has struck a deal with New York Times to offer Kindle users free access to the soon to be paywall-protected NYTimes.com.
 
Multiplatform TV channel Sony Movie Channel is introducing new programming blocks, including a Friday night double-feature movie block and a “Mandays” block launching Monday, April 4. The channel’s website is also launching Cinetrivia, an online film-focused trivia game. Sony Movie Channel is available on DISH Network, DirecTV and AT&T U-Verse TV, along with VOD and online platforms.
 
Hearst’s April $3.99 iPad edition of Oprah’s O Magazine, the 4th to come out for the tablet, is dedicated to poetry and features a clever Poetry in Motion feature allowing users to arrange words around to create their own poems. The edition also includes 16 pages of Oprah’s private journals, 11 of which are exclusive to the iPad.
 

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

 
Facebook is departing on a 5-city trial with daily deal site KGB Deals to offer flash deals in San Francisco, San Diego, Atlanta, Dallas and Austin in the coming weeks, according to the local coupon service, now available in 60 markets globally. Facebook’s new deals program involves several partners including ReachLocal, Gilt City, Tippr, HomeRun.com and PopSugar City.
 
Meanwhile, white-label technology provider Groupigg struck a deal with Newport Television to introduce daily deal offers on all 50 of its local TV station sites located in 22 U.S. markets.
 
UK-based media services company Arqiva has published a new website, LiveCinemaEvents.com, allowing rights holders to publish details of their events available for distribution on digital cinema screens. The site features sports, arts and entertainment content from around the world.
 

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

 
Digital retail ad platform MaxPoint Interactive and SymphonyIRI announced a partnership that will allow advertisers to target specific retail locations through digital advertising and immediately measure the campaign’s impact. The neighborhood-targeted solution was built to enable retailers and brands to measure ROI between digital ad spend and in-store product sales.
 
Kraft Foods
announced the integration of the Meebo Bar sharing tool on kraftfoods.com, the brand’s consumer facing food and cooking site. The Meebo Bar is now featured on more than 8,000 websites reaching 40% of U.S Internet users, according to the start-up.
 

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

 
Reality TV producer Endemol UK has acquired a 50% stake in long running celebrity website Holy Moly with plans to expand it to cover TV, music, film and fashion. Founder Jamie East, a former head of BSkyB’s broadband and mobile arms, will continue to run the site and retain a 50% share.
 
Leading 3D digital cinema platform RealD announced that it has surpassed 15,000 installations of its 3D system worldwide, including 8,600 screens in the U.S. and Canada and 6,500 screens internationally. RealD has grown its 3D footprint by 33% during the last quarter ending March 25.
 

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

 
Digital consumption during first two weeks of the NCAA Division I basketball tourney continues to trend upward and 29% of all video streams for Turner Sports, CBS Sports and NCAA‘s March Madness on Demand product from March 15 – March 27 were from the (much improved) iPhone and new iPad apps. The first five rounds of the tournament garnered 12.7 million total hours of streaming video consumed through both MMOD online and the iPad and iPhone apps.
 
Even while attendance fell, in-cinema advertising rose 12.7% last year to $658 million from $584 million in 2009, according to a new report from the Cinema Advertising Council. Regional and national cinema ad sales were up 13.9% y/y, accounting for 80.2% of the industry, with local growing 8.2% and accounting for 19.8% of the total cinema advertising market. More than 90% of revenues were from on-screen ads but off-screen including digital video ads were up by 38.4% on the year.
 

~ GADGETS & APPS ~

 
Viacom’s BET Networks has developed an interactive viewing iOS app for its popular music countdown show 106 & Park, designed to involve the audience in the live daily telecasts (the show airs weekdays from 6-8pm.) Users can pull up the iPhone/iPad app to vote for their favorite videos, appear on the show’s live “Twitter Wall” and scan mobile barcodes to unlock exclusive content and prizes. The show will be promoting the app heavily on air this week.
 
Still waiting to get your hands on an iPad 2? Apple will begin selling them in some 500 Radio Shack locations today according to report in MacRumors. No word on how many they’re getting and they’re likely to go fast.
 
NBC News has launched a special free iPad app to cover the Royal Wedding, including photos, news reports, social features and an interactive royal family tree. Msnbc.com’s Today.com has set up The Windsor Knot minisite to act as the digital hub of NBCU’s multiplatform coverage of the event.

Bravo Media named former Nielsen researcher David Kaplan to the position of VP/Bravo Media Ad Sales Research, a brand new position. David will work with Bravo ‘s advertisers on custom measurement solutions across all network touchpoints including on-air, online, social and interactive.
 
Twitter board member Jack Dorsey tweeted on Monday that he was returning to the company as Head of Product Development.
 
Former CEO of nCUBE Corp. and SkyConnect Michael Pohl has joined iTV technology company BlackArrow‘s Board of Directors. Michael received the NCTA’s Vanguard Award in 2008.
 


~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

 
Sometimes online tomfoolery is more interesting when it’s tied to happenings the real world. National Geographic Channel has turned to digital events specialist Deeplocal to develop an interactive game to promote its Expedition Week series of 13 new documentaries, premiering Sunday April 3. Log on using your Facebook or Twitter account to wait in line to take control of a real life model train equipped with a digital camera. The mission is to search this miniaturized set (based on the settings for some of the featured docs) for renderings of actual rare artifacts. If you find one on your 60-second journey, such as an actual 1888 edition of the Times of London with a headline about Jack the Ripper, take a picture of it through the app and the network will send you the actual artifact. You can only play once every 2 hours, and only one user can control the train at a time. But the idea is to create buzz and a “ripple effect” around the game to drive interest in the shows, according to Nathan Martin, Creative Director & CEO of Deeplocal. The company produced a “Nog Pong” event around the holidays with Saatchi and Saatchi LA, enabling users to aim a virtual ping pong cannon at cups of Egg Nog (sink one and the employees get to down another nog.) Some 65 million impressions were generated from the stunt, according to Mr. Martin.
