Cynopsis: Classified Advantage
03.27.12

Good morning. It’s Tuesday, March 27, 2012, and this is your weekly issue of Cynopsis: Classified Advantage!

Things that Interviewers do to Make You Nervous

There are many philosophies on how to interview a person, to get to their core.  Understand that the interviewer’s job is at stake, make too many bad hires, and the interviewer is out of a job.

Many interviewers want to see what you are like under pressure, therefore being able to predict how you will act under pressure while on the job.

Here are some of the most common methods.

Make you wait.

You’re called into the interviewers office, but they are on the phone or busy doing paperwork, they ask you to sit as they continue their work.  This can last for up to ten minutes.  One of the best ways to handle this is take out a pad and pen, and start doing some of your own work.  Once the interviewer sees that you will not just sit awkwardly and sweat, this tactic usually stops quickly and the interview begins.  Plus you have demonstrated that you do not waste time.

Don’t speak back.

You’ve been asked a question and you answered it completely and to the best of your ability.  The interviewer looks at you, as if he is expecting you to speak more on the subject.  He doesn’t say a word.  Two ways of handling this, first, smile and look back at him confidently, not puzzled or wondering what to do or say, or secondly, ask a question yourself.  For example, the interviewer asks you what you think about the prospects of the industry as a whole, you answer the question, if the interviewer does his thing by not responding, simply and politely ask him, “What do you think about the prospects?” Some interviewers will respond, “I want to hear more about what you think of the subject.”  This can be unnerving, because you already have answered to the best of your ability.  “I’m sorry, I thought you meant the industry in general, if you want me to be more specific about a particular sector of the industry, I’d be happy to.  Which sector would you like me to discuss?”  If he continues, it just gives you a chance to show your knowledge, just keep the conversation going.

Seem disinterested.

During the interview, the interviewer seems distracted, looking for something on his desk while you are answering a question.  It’s rude, but rude with a purpose.  The interviewer wants to gauge your reaction to his bad manners.  Simply stop what you are saying and ask the interviewer if there is something you can help him find.  Even stand up by his desk and help to look. This will make the interviewer feel uncomfortable, and the interview should continue with you passing this test with flying colors.

Question you answer.

The interviewer asks you a question and is shocked at your unsophisticated response.  This is the interviewer’s acting at his best.  He doesn’t just disagree, but actually seems upset at your answer.  What ever the interviewer says, handle it in a calm and confidential manner.  Asked if he would like some clarification, if not, don’t offer any.  This is simply meant to rattle you, don’t allow it.

Ask questions with no right answer.

Which would you rather be, an orange or an apple?   Some interviewers will ask questions like this as if they have some significance. Answer it.  “An apple, I like apples better.”  Keep your answers concise and clear.

Interrupt you.

Some interviewers will ask an involved question, and as soon as you seem on a roll, they will interrupt.  They want to see if you can keep on task, even when outside influences are present.  Wait for the interruption to resolve itself, and continue.  Try to avoid, “As I was saying…” or anything that might be received as confrontational.  Just continue.  If the interviewer needs you to back up, he’ll ask.

Remember, all these tactics are meant to rattle you.  Knowing about them before they happen will give you a tremendous advantage in staying calm and on task.

Next Issue: Questions that will be asked

~ ACTIONABLE EXPERT ADVICE ~
Don’t Overlook the Most Important Step to Finding Employment: Developing a Job-Search Plan
by Joel Garfinkle

One of the most overlooked aspects of the job-search process is planning.

Most job seekers ignore this important step and focus instead on polishing their resumes and sending them to as many prospects as possible. They look at finding employment as a “numbers game.” If they have 100 resumes in circulation, they figure their chances are significantly better than a competitor who has only mailed out 30 or 40.

Having worked as an executive coach and career consultant for more than a decade, I’ve learned that just isn’t the case.

People who take the time and make the effort to develop a plan will not only find employment faster, but are likely to find a job that is better suited to their needs and career goals.

Here are five steps in building a strong foundation to enhance your job-search efforts:

1. Make a personal commitment.
If you’re unemployed, looking for a job is a full-time job. Make the commitment that you’re willing to invest the time, energy and discipline required.

2. Develop a list of goals.
This should be more than just “I want a job.” Think about what would be your ideal job. What would make you most happy? What industry would you work in? In what city of part of the country would you like to live?

3. Develop a marketing strategy.
Think of yourself as a product and you are the product manager. What is your competitive advantage? Why should someone hire you? What can you offer that others can’t?

4. Focus on your target market.
Develop a list of companies you would like to work for that would be most likely to hire someone with your specific skill set.

5. Do your homework on each target company.
Read their annual reports or news releases. Find out as much as you can about their needs and challenges and how you can position yourself to help them meet their goals.

Once you’ve taken these steps, you can then tailor your resume and cover letter to match the specific needs of the targeted organization.

Questions from our Readers
Answered by Joel Garfinkle

Are pay (expensive) job search sites worth it, do they really have job opportunities that no one else has?

It is unlikely that job search sites that require job seekers to pay a fee to join have a significant number of jobs not found elsewhere. The reason for this is the employer has one goal  to fill their open position with the best candidate possible. Limiting their candidate search to a site like this would be counter-productive.

Your time and money will be much better spent on a career coach. A career coach will help you target the exact industry and job you want, avoid the mistakes job seekers make, network to identify key insiders who can hand-deliver your resume and close the deal during the interview.

If I was making about $175,000 annual salary prior to being laid off, and have been out of work for ten months, what salary range should I be shooting for? Is there some kind of equation that demonstrates the amount of time you’ve been out of work to the drop in salary you need to take?

To negotiate a higher starting salary you must clearly communicate the value you’ll bring to the company. First, it’s important to understand the length of your job search is affected by so many factors  the economy, the demand for your particular skills, the vitality of your industry, and more.

Although the figure that a job search takes approximately 1 month for each $10,000 in salary is unsubstantiated, it does illustrate a general point that higher salaried positions are often less numerous than lower salaried positions, which may result in a longer job search process. However, there is no magic sliding scale that adjusts salary based on the length of your job search.

Instead, look at the prevailing market conditions. For instance, if you’re seeing positions that seem to be a good fit for your area of expertise and experience, but the salary range is $125,000  to $150,000, then you may need to adjust your salary expectations. The same is true if you’re getting offers for lower salaries, then the market conditions may simply be such that your position is not currently worth $175,000.

In your new position, demonstrate how valuable your skills are to your new employer, and I’m sure you’ll work your way back to your previous salary and beyond.
