Cynopsis: DIGITAL
03/25/08
Good morning, it’s Tuesday, March 25, 2008, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
After losing out in the FCC’s spectrum auction just days ago, Google is already pressing the FCC to utilize TV “white space” to provide cheap nationwide wi-fi internet access. In a letter filed with the FCC on Friday, Google’s Washington telcom and media counsel Richard Whitt reiterated that a vast majority of viable spectrum goes unused or is underutilized. Broadcasters have long complained that white space services would interfere with TV broadcasts and next year’s transition from analog to digital, but Google promises it could work through any problems. Whitt mentions adopting technologies such as “spectrum sensing” to prevent signals from interfering with one another.
Now that the format war is over, the home video industry faces the challenge of getting folks to upgrade their DVD players. Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release its first set of “BD-Live” Blu-ray DVDs on April 8, containing interactive features accessible via broadband connected “Profile 2.0” Blu-ray players. John C. Riley comedy Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story and Schwarzenegger Sci-Fi thriller The 6th Day will be the first titles. Sony is also releasing a firmware update for the PlayStation 3 by the end of the month to enable PS3s to access the interactive content, including downloadable video, ringtones and casual games.
MTV.com debuted a new Flash-based full-episode video player in time for new episodes of The Hills this week, featuring improved streaming quality, color fidelity and resolution. It also offers a full-screen viewing option and automatically adjusts for 16 x 9 ratio video. Better yet, MTV.com also streamlined its design to feature more white space and less clutter.
Fans of the hit Harmonix/MTV Games console game Rock Band will soon be able to play it on their Nintendo Wii. A special Wii edition will go on sale in the U.S. and Canada on June 22 for $169.99, including the software, drums, microphone and wireless guitar.
Emerging network Retirement Living negotiated full distribution on Verizon’s FiOS TV service. The two companies will also work together on subscriber acquisition campaigns targeting 55+ year olds in key Verizon markets.
Hispanic digital network Mexicanal signed a multicast carriage agreement with the Journal Broadcast Group. Journal will add Mexicanal as a digital subchannel at KTNV/ABC in Las Vegas; KMIR/NBC in Palm Springs; KGUN/ABC in Tucson and KIVI/ABC in Boise.
Live webcam “lifecasting” portal Justin.tv celebrated its one-year anniversary over the weekend and looked back on some impressive stats. The free UGC webcaster logged 87 million page views, 24.9 million unique visitors, 28,106 total channels and 356,197 registered users.
The Justice Dept. finally approved the merger between satellite radio providers Sirius and XM, more than a year after the original deal was drawn up. In the end, the companies were able to convince Justice that a single satellite broadcaster will face more than enough competition from emerging platforms to insure aggressive pricing and consumer value. Promising tiered pricing, offering fewer channels at less than the current $12.99/month all you can listen to rate, also helped seal the deal.
The recession is already affecting marketing pitches in the tech world. Comcast picked up on telco Qwest‘s strategy of offering a “price for life” for high-speed internet access. Meanwhile Virgin Mobile USA is offering a bunch of new Pay As You Go plans with “roll forward” minutes, unlimited nights and weekends and unlimited SMS messaging.
Gemstar-TV Guide International signed a patent licensing agreement with Korean set-top manufacturer Humax Co., Ltd., allowing Humax to incorporate Gemstar IPGs in retail set-tops distributed in Europe.
ESPN.com has made the decision not to sell its remnant ad inventory through online ad networks or exchanges, according to Mediaweek. The network is concerned about the commoditization of brand inventory and feels that selling unsold inventory at cut rate prices devalues the power of its content.
This didn’t stop Forbes from forming its own online ad network, made up of about 400 financial themed blogs, powered by Adify.
The California Milk Processor Board’s “Got Milk?” campaign is heading to YouTube, MySpace and various social networks with a series of teen-focused messaging espousing the benefits of milk, reports Mediapost. Goodby, Silverstein & Partners is heading up the campaign, which revolve around a fictional, milk-enhanced rock star named White Gold and his band mates “The Calcium Twins.”
HD Networks will find their way into 65.7% of U.S. multichannel households by 2012, according to a new study from SNL Kagan, up from 18.8% in 2007. A total of 74 HD networks have launched in the U.S. so far. The 25 HD networks tracked by Kagan last year earned only $49 million in gross ad revenue. That total is expected to increase almost ten-fold to $421 million by 2012, but this will still pale in comparison to the $28.3 billion expected from traditional cable networks in 2011.
Packaged goods purchases were about 5% lower in homes with DVRs, according to a three-year study by Information Resources Inc. cited in Ad Age. Results varied among brands, but only about 20% of the marketers measured lost a statistically significant volume of sales in DVR households.
Jeff Sellinger will replace Cyriac Roeding atop CBS Interactive’s mobile division as EVP & GM, CBS Mobile, who is leaving to pursue “entrepreneurial endeavors.” Jeff, who has served as SVP of CBS Mobile since Dec. 2007, will oversee mobile operations across multiple properties including CBS Entertainment, CBS Sports and CBS News. He reports to Quincy Smith, President, CBS Interactive.
MediaFLO USA added two executives to its senior management team. Former CBS Interactive SVP/Entertainment and Disney/ABC vet Jonathan Barzilay joined as SVP/Programming & Advertising. Former Viewsonic president Matt Milne came aboard as SVP/Sales & Marketing. Both report to Gina Lombardi, president of MediaFLO USA.
CTAM named three new members to its Board of Directors: Len Fogge, EVP/Creative, Marketing, Research & Digital Media, Showtime Networks, Inc.; Jonathan Hargis, SVP/Marketing & Advertising, Cablevision Systems Corp. and David Juliano, EVP/Marketing & Product Development, Comcast were elected at the March 12 Board meeting in New York City.
Jumpstart Automotive Media appointed Eve Maidenberg as Senior Director of its new Jumpstart Labs ad division, focused on creative development of digital advertising including web enhancements, user interface analysis and syndication services.
Warning–be prepared to spend the next few hours goofing off and laughing hysterically. The web joint venture between Comedy Central and Matt Stone & Trey Parker is up and running. South Park Studios offers up thousands of searchable, embeddable clips and contains every episode ever made of South Park, for free. The venture, which will also serve as an incubator for new digital projects, is groundbreaking as far as major media goes, splitting ad revenue 50/50 between the Viacom channel and the show’s creators. That kind of rev share should help motivate Matt and Trey to offend people in all kinds of new ways.
