Good Morning, it’s Tuesday, March 20, 2007 and this is your first early morning digital briefing – the VERY first digital early morning briefing!
Legendary showrunner Steven Bochco (Hill Street Blues, L.A. Law) joined the ranks of multiplatform producers with a new series Cafe Confidential, a 44-webisode series consisting of teens and twenty-somethings sharing semi-autobiographical stories. The short-form videos, shot close-up, are taken from interviews of more than 100 people talking about memorable moments. The clips are featured on Metacafe.com, one of the first sites that offered to pay producers for their content. Metacafe is also sponsoring a contest around the show, offering prizes for top home-made submissions.
YouTube is hosting its own user-generated awards show. Categories include most creative, most inspirational, best serial entertainment, best comedy and best commentary. Videos can be submitted at www.youtube.com/ytaawards through March 23. Winners will be posted on March 26.
Gumby‘s fifty, dammit! Episodes of the classic TV series will be streamed on sites such as Google Video, AOL/In2TV and on the DMGI channel of YouTube ( www.youtube.com/dmgivideo ) to celebrate the golden anniversary of The Gumby Show TV premiere. Over the next few months all 200+ digitally remastered episodes will be distributed to the sites. Classic Media owns the rights to Gumby and digital clearing house DMGI has signed a deal to distribute the series digitally.
Multiplatform content brand Lime launched its “Live the Change” campaign, encouraging Americans to take simple steps to live a healthier, greener life. To encourage people to walk more, users are asked to log onto www.lime.com/walkout and input the number of minutes they walked each day. An algorithm converts minutes to miles, calories burned and the number of new trees that would have to be planted to offset carbon emissions created had they driven. The Lime community is asked to share videos, blogs and essays about how they’ve changed their lives.
Comedy site SecretFunTime.com announced its beta launch with a selection of on-demand sketches and live comedy and musical performances. The site was founded by Tyler Malin and CSI’s Eric Szmanda, who plays lab tech turned field investigator Greg Sanders. Szmanda can be seen in shorts such as “Dope Ass Warrior” created for the launch of the site.
NBCU’s thechrismatthewsshow .com is relaunching later this month with a new design, new polling and interactive features and daily political updates. The site will also offer show transcripts and feature more information about the show’s panelists.
AOL kid service KOL ( www.kol.com ) debuted Taiwanese puppet series Wulin Warriors: Legend of the Seven Stars. The action/comedy animated series is a spin off of the traditional action series, mixing traditional Budashai glove puppetry with a plot driven narrative. Wulin Warriors has spawned a TV channel, a line of licensed products and feature film in Taiwan.
Discovery Channel‘s Canadian site ( http://discoverychannel.ca/) relaunched with a fresh design and new features. It features a wider, cleaner design and improved integration between on air and online video content. For instance, a click on the window promoting the nightly show Daily Planet brings you to a screen that allows you to watch last night’s episode, read the producer’s journal, view exclusive supplemental video material or take the “mindbender” quiz, which has an on air component every Wednesday.
NBCU’s iVillage.com introduced a group of new social networking tools to enhance the community experience of the woman’s site. IVillage Connect allows users to create profiles, set up blogs, upload photos and invite friends and family to join. It will also help integrate the site’s 1,000+ message boards with personal profiles.
EA Mobile launched a service give users access to ringtones, wallpapers and the latest news about EA Sports games. The company plans to add interactive gaming to the platform in the future, allowing players to challenge each other the wireless network.

This Website of the Day was submitted by Matt Caldecutt of Trylon SMR, New York: Calling itself “the People’s Media Company,” www. associatedcontent.com is a user-generated site that is trying to share the wealth and expand upon the upload-your-own-video craze. Some 50,000 registered users upload 20,000 pieces of text, audio, video, or image-based content each day on a countless amount of topics. Users can search by type of content, genre, creator or community, or view works in terms of newest, most page views, most buddies or most referrals. Top-rated content appears on the home page, along with a selection of featured videos. Publishers get paid $1.50 per-thousand page views of content.
A new website will be featured here everyday for you to check out. Some are TV-centric, some creative, some just plain strange. Email me your suggestions at [email protected] and if I include the site you mention, your name, company and city will be credited. Only one mention per calendar week, to make it fair.
