CBS Television Stations is putting local bloggers to work syndicating stations video content in a bold new widget program that shares ad revenue with local blogs and profile page creators. The idea is to give CBS stations additional targeted web locales to sell to, according to Jonathan Lees, President and GM of CBS Television Stations Digital Media Group, while providing additional outlets for locally-produced video content. The widget program, powered by Syndigo, has already launched in Boston, Dallas, San Francisco, Chicago and Denver and The CBS Local Ad Network is having no trouble recruiting publishers to play along. For instance, the popular RedSoxNation.net blog has a sports widget up and running from WBZ-TV, currently sponsored by Jeep.
Nickelodeon attracted more than 25 million unique users to its casual online games last month, according to a feature in The New York Times. That’s nearly 10 million more than its closest competitors Yahoo Games (15.5 million), Electronic Arts and Disney (12 million each,) according to comScore. Nickelodeon is readying the first of 600 new games this week, part of a $100 million investment, which in turn is a subset of the $500 million MTV Networks has earmarked for the genre. By the way, the environmental game The Big Green Help reported here on Friday is actually scheduled to launch in November, not in April as previously mentioned.
TVN Entertainment will provide an outlet for Film Movement’s Film Festival on Demand for multiple years following the extension of a recent deal. The offering features 8 long and short-form films/month which have recently premiered at prominent film festivals including Cannes, Sundance, Berlin, Tribeca, Venice and Toronto.
Nothing sticks out like a standard def ad sandwiched between HD video content. Video Ad network BrightRoll figures the web is actually better suited to deliver HD video advertising. The company is launching a new unit allowing advertisers to get their messages across on “high def ready” publisher sites. BrightRoll is currently working on a HD campaign with Universal McCann.
Yahoo‘s popular photo sharing site Flickr – which celebrated its 4th birthday over the weekend – will launch a long-rumored video site next month, rumor has it.
Video delivery firm Clearleap got investors Trinity Ventures and Noro-Mosely Partners to take a leap of faith with $9 million in first round financing. The company, founded by N2Broadband veterans Braxton Jarrett and John Vecchio, is out to build “a new model that brings the breadth and diversity of internet video to the convenience and quality of TV.”
~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~
Steve Jobs may not like it for the iPhone, but since when did that stop Redmond? Microsoft has licensed Adobe’s Flash Lite software to enable Flash-compatible content to be accessed in the Internet Explorer Mobile browser, as an alternative to its Silverlight framework. Adobe estimates over a half a billion Flash-capable mobile devices have already been shipped. Meanwhile Adobe is preparing to launch its proprietary Adobe Media Player next month, according to NewTeeVee, bundled with its other free players and designed to support live video feeds via RSS.
YouTube is slowly but surely sneaking higher quality formatted videos onto its site, offering users to choice to toggle an “always show me higher quality when available” option on their account page. We’re not talking HD yet (promised by Steve Chen later this year), but with the site now supporting 1 GB uploads, the upgrade is definitely an improvement.
The NBCU Auto Network of affiliated sites just added a new company to its fleet as NBCU acquired a 35% stake in DriverTV, a producer of slick promotional video car advertorials partly owned by TV and ad production outfit Radical Media. DriverTV delivers immersive, HD quality test drive videos featuring 360 degree shots of new car interiors and exteriors to nearly 30 million VOD homes and 500,000 hotel rooms.
CBS Interactive’s new man-on-the-street interview show Moblogic.tv, hosted by Lindsay Campbell of Wallstrip fame, landed Saturn as its first sponsor. The car maker has purchased banner ads, billboard-style visuals and 5-second pre rolls and 30-second post roll ads.

Online video distributor ROO is relocating from New York to Dubai after completing its acquisition of Australian digital marketing company Sputnik. The move is the latest bit of restructuring undergone by the start-up, which let go of 20% of its work force last month and reduced several management layers. Sputnik Managing Director Gavin Campion will serve as President of ROO Group from Dubai, reporting to CEO Kaleil Isaza Tuzman.
Advertising Technology Company Linkstorm added a pair of new executives. McCann-Erickson Worldgroup veteran Lois Condon joins as VP/Advertising Operations and former 24/7 Real Media R&D specialist Gabe Nydick becomes Chief of Infrastructure.
Former Flycell marketer Mark Lehmann was named VP/Web and Mobile Marketing by Island Def Jam Music Group. He will work with the company’s new media team and partners to distribute Island Def Jam artist content through new technologies such as widgets, mobile websites and video players.
Mountain Dew is going to back to the digital content well with a 5-part webisode series from film writer/directors Shawn Papizian and Art Brown slated to launch this June, according to THR. Users will be able to interact with the storyline by choosing from a variety of options that will take the series in different creative directions. In the meantime, check out The Pepsi drink’s ambitious Dewmocracy casual game/movie site co-produced and narrated by Forest Whitaker, which attempts to create a mythology around a series of games.
