CYNTHIA TURNER’S
CYNOPSIS

06/08/04

Good morning. It’s Tuesday, June 8, 2004, and this is your first early morning briefing.

Fox officially launches it year round programming initiative tonight with the premiere of The Jury 8pm, with a episode #2 at 9p (and a scheduled repeat on Fridays at 9p).  Several other programs will debut this month include North Shore (20th) on Tuesdays at 8pm beginning June 14 (repeats scheduled Thurs at 8p); The Casino (Mark Burnett Prods) also on June 14, at 9p; Method & Red (Regency/20th) on Wednesdays as of June 16 at 930p (scheduled repeats on Tuesdays at 830p); sitcom Quintuplets (20th/Imagine) kicks off on Wednesday night at 830p as of June 16 (repeating Sundays at 930p); The Simple Life 2 (20th/Bunim-Murray) premieres on June 16 at 9p.

Premieres:
The Jury – Fox at 8pm (second episode at 9pm)
Last Comic Standing – NBC at 8pm (2-hr premiere)

President Reagan’s funeral coverage will include live broadcast of the President’s body being moved from the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in California and begins its journey to Andrews Air Force Base in Washington (approx 11am ET). Coverage picks up again as the plane lands at Andrews (approx 5pm) and for the funeral procession to the Capitol via horse drawn caisson at 1600 Constitution Avenue. Coverage continues that evening with the State Funeral in the Capitol Rotunda.  On Friday, June 11, live coverage will pick up again in Washington at approx 10am as the body is brought by motorcade to the Washington National Cathedral for the national service, and then to Andrews AFB for its departure back to the Naval Base Ventura County in Point Mugu, CA, for a private burial.  The broadcast networks will interrupt regular programming for their coverage, while more extensive and sustaining coverage will come from the cable news nets.

Tributes to President Reagan in upcoming days include:
History Channel’s Ronald Reagan: The Man They Knew, June 10 from 8-11pm
Turner Classic Movies: 24 hour movie tribute with 15 films on June 10 beginning at 8am

ABC‘s coverage of Game #1 of the NBA finals drew a 5.3/14 A18-49 rating according to fast nationals from Nielsen Media Research.  That number increased in the male demos with a 6.7/18 among M18-49, 6.3/19 M18-34, and a 6.7/16 among M25-54.  Overall, from 9-11pm ABC averaged 11.3 million viewers, winning the time period in all mentioned categories.

Fox‘s season finale of Arrested Development which is scheduled to return next season, delivered a 2.5/7 A18-49 rating according to Nielsen Media Research, with its highest demo numbers coming from Men 18-34 who posted a 3.9/13.

Mark Burnett is on the prowl, in search of not just a singing Idol, but of a Rock and Roll Star who can step in as an established rock group’s lead singer.  Armed with former Idol supervising producer David Goffin as exec prod, Mark Burnett Prods is expected to pitch the networks with the concept next week, according to Daily Variety.  Given Burnett’s obvious displeasure with Fox (remember Fox is launching a direct competitor to The Contender), you gotta wonder how many seasons do you think The Casino will last on Fox?

Two of the MTVN networks – MTV and VH1 have announced new programming slates. MTV’s announcement include the green light for a dozen new pilot.  Among the VH1 series scheduled to launch this summer are:

  • A2Z – Pop icons and anecdotes can make a powerful and compelling combination, at least that’s the hope with this show which will focus on the likes of Johnny Depp, Nick & Jessica, Pam Anderson, Angelina Jolie, Donald Trump, and P. Diddy. Premieres Monday, July 12
  • Smokin’ Hot Talk (working title) – according to the VH1 description, this show will take a funny, honest and revealing glimpse into America’s libido and emotional ethics.  Premieres Mon., July 26
  • Wack TV Passport – is six 30m eps of amazingly wild footage from around the world, commercials to ‘real’ video. Premieres Monday, August 16
  • Totally Obsessed – Explores the strange, sometimes freaky world of people who have a passion for the extraordinary.  Premieres Monday, August 23

During the 2004 Movie Awards, Eminem mooned the audience, a sight you won’t get to see.  Not that that’s necessarily a bad thing.  When the show airs on Thursday night on MTV, a still stinging from the Superbowl network will make sure there are no eruptions from the stunt.  It just seems a little overly cautious since we’ve been seeing butts on TV for the last decade – in NYPD Blue alone.   At this point, would the FCC penalize a cable network for a butt shot, when precedence allows it?

Starz named Minneapolis-based Fallon Worldwide as its media agency of record. Fallon Worldwide is a Publicis Group division.  The agency will handle the network’s 13 digital movie channels’ strategic media planning and purchasing (including Starz on Demand and STARZ! HD). Starz is continuing with TBWAChiatDay as its creative agency of record.

The China Movie Channel (CCTV-6) and the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences signed a multiyear licensing agreement to broadcast the Primetime Emmy Awards starting this year on September 19.  Grace Ip, the Academy’s consultant for China, negotiated the agreement which was announced at the 10th Shanghai Film Festival.

Amsterdam-based Zone Vision’s Reality TV channel will be reaching out to 80 million Chinese homes as soon as this July. The international media corporation inked a 5-year deal with Travel Satellite Television (TSTV) for carriage of Reality TV.  TSTV will broadcast a branded programming block daily dubbed in Mandarin during primetime hours that will be ad supported.  This new agreement is part of TSTV’s relaunch.  Reality TV was first introduced in 1999 in Europe.

Yeah Tampa Bay Lightening!

MediaCom U.S announced the upping of Kris Coontz to President/Grey Entertainment and MediaCom Los Angeles, from EVP/Entertainment Marketing. Karen Bloore, former SVP/Entertainment Marketing, will succeed Coontz as EVP. Kris will oversee all operations for two divisions in California: Grey Entertainment and MediaCom Los Angeles. In addition, he will continue to lead the Warner Bros. account.

Karl Lewis has been named SVP/Advertising Sales at Oxygen Media.  The announcement was made by Gina Garrubbo, Oxygen’s EVP/Advertising Sales.  Karl will be based in the Chicago office where he will oversee all of the company’s regional sales offices including Chicago, Detroit and Los Angeles.

Several exec changes at NBC Universal Domestic Television, the syndication arm of NBC-U.  You know Barry Wallach will head up the division as President, and has since named Linda Finnell as head of programming, with Sean O’Boyle overseeing all first run domestic sales.  Arthur Hasson, formerly EVP/Sales at Universal, will be responsible for off-net and cable sales as well as oversee sales to Canada.  John Hookstratten has been named EVP/Business Operations.  Leaving the arena is Universal’s former programming head Lisa Hackner.
