Apple is reaching for the (virtual) skies and a post-PC world, with Steve Jobs announcing a new service called “iCloud,” which allows Apple product owners store documents and music on the Internet instead of on their own computer hard drives or mobile phones. Jobs showcased the service, as well as the company’s new mobile and Mac operating systems in his keynote presentation at the 2011 World Wide Developer Conference in San Francisco.
The iCloud will now replace MobileMe and its central apps, including Contact, Mail, and Calendar, with a completely rewritten version designed to store data remotely as well as sync it with Apple devices. That will now allow all of a consumer’s Apple devices such as iPhone, iPad and Mac computers to sync wirelessly using iCloud and allow users access to their apps, documents, pictures, appointments and email from any location, rather than just on a specific device.
Apple’s new OS for laptop and desktop computers will be named Mac OS X Lion and will be available next month for $30. Lion will feature new multitouch gestures, and a LaunchPad system for easier browsing and use of apps, among other upgrades.
Meanwhile, the company is bolstering its mobile operating system as well, launching iOS 5. The iOS 5 beta release includes more than 200 new features that will be available to iPhone, iPad and iPod touch users beginning this fall. New features on the system include: Notification Center; iMessage (a new messaging service that lets consumers send text messages, photos and videos between all iOS devices); as well as Newsstand, which organizes newspaper and magazine subscriptions. With the new PC Free feature, iOS 5 users will be able to activate, set up and update their iOS device at any time without the need of a computer.
“iOS 5 has some great new features, such as Notification Center, iMessage and Newsstand and we can’t wait to see what our developers do with its 1,500 new APIs,” said Jobs. “Perhaps iOS 5’s paramount feature is that it’s built to seamlessly work with iCloud in the Post PC revolution that Apple is leading.”
Following Sony’s recent cyber attack targeting its European subsidiary, London-based Sony Europe Ltd. the company’s share price dropped more than 3% to a two-year low on Monday. The company confirmed the company’s website was illegally breached though no confidential data was stolen or published. Sony Europe identified the hit on Saturday morning saying even though the data accessed was open for anyone to view the hacker broke into the website via an illegal path. Also on Saturday, US-based Sony Pictures Entertainment released an apology because of a personal data breach by hackers involving the theft of more than one million passwords, email addresses and other information. Japanese game maker, Nintendo further said its US division server was hacked a few weeks ago also driving its stock shares down.
Maybe it was Bowser. Nintendo has become the latest victim of a string of cyber-attacks by hacker group Lulz Security. No customer data was accessed during the attack, which took place several weeks ago, according to a statement Nintendo of America sent to Reuters. LulzSec wrote on Twitter that it had only accessed a configuration file and that they “<3” the company. Other recent attacks by organization include PBS.org and Sony.

Leap Year, a new web-based scripted comedy series commissioned by US small business insurer Hiscox, premieres this week on Hulu. Designed to market its direct and online business insurance, the Leap year series follows the ups and downs of five friends that make a ‘leap’ into the world of entrepreneurship after being downsized, as they compete for funds to start a new business. A new episode of the 10-episode series will debut every Monday on www.leapyear-hiscox.tv, Hulu, YouTube, Inc.com and iTunes, as well as via connected TVs and Blu-ray players, gaming consoles, set-top boxes and mobile devices via the Hulu Plus subscription service. Hiscox teamed with The Young Entrepreneur Council (Y.E.C.) to provide exclusive columns for the Small Business Hacks section of the Leap Year website, which also features content by a number of business founders.
FremantleMedia Enterprises and Syco TV partner with Barcrest Group to develop two Britain’s Got Talent-branded land-based slots games. The games will feature images and video clips of noted acts from the past seasons of Britain’s Got Talent as well as additional audio and visuals, including the series theme music. Created by Simon Cowell and produced by Syco TV and talkbackTHAMES, a FremantleMedia company, Britain’s Got Talent airs in the UK on ITV (www.itv.com/talent).
Beginning today, consumer internet company Meebo offers a way to discover New York culture and history through its new True New Yorker Quest. The Quest is launching as part of Internet Week New York where Meebo is a premiere sponsor. Tribal Fusion has entered the Arabian market, opening offices in Jeddah and Riyadh in Saudi Arabia. The digital marketing company targeted the area in order to position the Saudi market as a regional leader in online advertising and marketing. Tribal Fusion recently opened branches in both Egypt and Dubai and now has plans to expand to more Middle-Eastern countries.
FocusVision is adding to their tool shed, announcing the release of InterVu 2.0, which will now feature a new project management portal and marking tool. InterVu 2.0 will provide researchers and agencies with access to all of the company’s standard capabilities which include: marking, clipping, chat, archive, video-synchronized transcripts, and audio podcasts, as well as enabling FocusVision technicians to more effectively manage each InterVu project. The new portal will allow the company to automate respondent webcam fulfillment and testing as well as provide real-time status into respondent progress.
Video management platform Ooyala is announcing a new partnership with online video ad specialist YuMe this morning to enable Ooyala customers to tap directly into the YuMe ACE for Publishers (AFP) ad management platform to improve monetization and ad optimization efforts. YuMe’s Relevance Engine matches ads to relevant audiences across multiple platforms including PC, mobile, or connected TVs. The turnkey integration makes YuMe advertising inventory available to all premium accounts from the time the account is created.
San Francisco agency Dimensional Branding Group is launching a new and expanded suite of client services that focus on promotion and business development, signing clients that include the popular Angry Birds game for promotional programs as well as global game publisher MINICLIP. As part of its upgrades, the company is unveiling a new motto, “taking brands to new dimensions”, an updated logo as well as a website on June 12th.
Online video technology company Tremor Media is undergoing a rebrand and will now be known as Tremor Video. The new name is designed to reflect the growing popularity of streaming video as well as the company’s ability to help marketers reach these consumers through various platforms. The company recently launched Video Hub, an ad console that helps marketers measure, track, report and deliver on the signals actually driving performance of their video campaigns.
Paradigm Sample will debut a consumer research smartphone app this July for IdeaShifters, its US panel of P18-34 specifically recruited for receptivity to and usage of mobile devices. The app allows panelists to use their iPhones, and later this year Android users, to provide timely and location specific data through tailored surveys and information based on where they are at that moment and as they are making purchase decisions. The way it works is that an icon will pop up on their iPhone to signal that a questionnaire is available when a panelist goes to a specific retail location. If a panel member records a negative retail comment, store managers will be immediately notified so that they can theoretically remedy the issue. The app also lets panelists check out their account status for incentives for participation, and redeem points.
File and process management app ASTRO File Manager has broken the official 10 million download threshold, averaging more than 25,000 downloads per day. The free app is used for managing photos, documents, music and videos on Android smart phones and tablets, and recently upgraded to include support for networking, Bluetooth, and text searches.
As the summer vacation season heats up, iQapps, developer of the travel app Trip Journal brought out a new Trip Viewer travel app for the iPad. Trip Viewer was unveiled at the Mobile App World 2011 and gives iPad users a media-rich and interactive way to relive and share their trips through photos, videos, notes and more via the iPad.
NBCUniversal upped Hilary Smith to the newly created position of SVP/Communications for the Entertainment & Digital Networks and Integrated Media (E&DN/IM) portfolio. In this capacity, Hilary adds communications oversight of Fandango, DailyCandy, Swirl, Television Without Pity, and the recently announced Hispanics at NBCU initiative to her existing areas of communications responsibility which include: iVillage, Women at NBCU, Green is Universal and Healthy at NBCU. She will report to Nicholas Lehman, President of Digital for E&DN/IM and Cameron Blanchard, EVP/Communications, E&DN/IM.
Otto Berkes joins HBO as SVP/Consumer Technology, reporting to Bob Zitter, HBO’s Chief Technology Officer. Otto oversees HBO’s technology group focusing on interactive consumer technology, including products like HBO and MAX GO, the company’s online streaming services.
Bitcentral hired Lee Roquet as VP/Client Services, reporting to Gary Coats, COO. Among his duties, Lee will work with purchasers of Bitcentral’s most recent product, Bitcentral Create. This broadcast newsroom workflow extends the story package creation and editing process out to the scene of breaking news, a process implemented with a standard laptop and a high-speed wireless connection. This workflow is often paired with Bitcentral’s archiving and content sharing solution, Oasis, which enables new production collaboration, whether it is within newsroom teams or among stations in groups.

The Submarine Channel, an eclectic site produced by the Submarine production company based in Amsterdam, showcases title designs in films and TV shows in its blog Forget the Film, Watch the Titles, – a little-recognized art form that has really blossomed since the 50’s when the American graphic designer Saul Bass was doing some of his best work for directors such as Alfred Hitchcock, Otto Preminger and Stanley Kubrick. The site features title sequences from films around the world and accompanies them with information and sometimes interviews with the designers. Opening sequences like this one from Singapore TV comedy Love in A Cab from Mojo’s Cindy Liu (who hails from Taiwan) can serve as great fodder for art designers and graphic artists around the world – her own inspiration was Japanese convenience stores and Asian supermarkets. The group has also just released a 2-DVD set and 36-page companion booklet featuring title sequences posted on the site for the past 6 years, available on the site or via Amazon.
