CYNTHIA TURNER’S
Cynopsis

06/06/06

Good Morning. It’s Tuesday, June 6, 2006, and this is your first early morning briefing.

Leading the broadcast network upfront negotiations, or perhaps stalling the start to the upfront negotiations?  DVR ratingsABC has attempted to lead the broadcast fight to include ratings from shows recorded and watched later on. If this sounds familiar, it’s based on Nielsen’s Live + Seven Day numbers.  But advertisers are standing tough, willing only to acknowledge (and pay for) live ratings, and won’t consider numbers for shows recorded and played later on in the same 24 hour period (aka live + same day numbers), much less played within the same week.  ABC has decided to cool its jets on this issue for now, agreeing to sell time based on live ratings only, tho did release this statement: “The ABC Television Network continues to believe strongly in the worth of the ‘Live Plus’ viewer, and will continue its efforts to include this audience.”

Tonight’s Premieres:
Bravo:  Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D List at 9p, Queer Eye at 10p
Oxygen:  The Janice Dickinson Modeling Agency at 10p

* MORE GOOD STUFF *

FX has ordered up a seventh and final season of The Shield with 13 new episodes, set to premiere in late 2007 or early 2008.  When The Shield completes its final season, it will have 88 episodes in the can. If you’re wondering when the 6th season kicks off – you’ll have to wait until early 2007, and that season is just 10 episodes long.

Court TV and MSN will partner for the first time to premiere the two opening episodes online of Court TV’s new series Haunting Evidence.  The program premieres first on MSN on June 12 at http://tv.msn.com/tv/hauntingevidence, and then follows on Court TV June 14 at 1030p. Similarly, episode two the following week will premiere two days ahead of its network debut. Along with each show MSN will provide editorial content and email blasts on their TV and Entertainment pages. In addition, Court TV will sponsor a multi-media campaign both in the New York region and nationally to support the partnership and the premieres.

The Tribune Company will sell WATL/Atlanta to Gannett Co. for $180 million. The sale will close pending regulatory approval. Currently a WB affiliate, WATL as of this fall is the new MyNetworkTV in Atlanta.

Blockbuster movies such as Troy, Miss Congeniality and The In-Laws will now be seen on the Hallmark Channel. The network has acquired 39 feature films from Warner Bros. Domestic Cable Distribution, including the U.S. television premiere of March of the Penguins (if you haven’t seen it yet – you’ll want to mark this down) which will air during the holiday season. Other titles in the movie package include Phantom of the Opera, New York Minute, Felicity: An American Girl Adventure and Samantha: An American Girl Holiday.

Food Network star Dave Lieberman will showcase a second original series for the network’s broadband channel available at www.FoodNetwork.com/DaveDoes. After the success of Eat This, Dave will host Dave Does premiering August 14 with 13 five-minute webisodes. Each of the shorts will feature new food trends, gadgets and insider restaurant locations at the various stops in Boston, Philadelphia, New York and Portland, OR. Sprint and Saturn will sponsor the online series.

here! has been added to several Time Warner Cable (TWC) systems.  The subscription 24/7 premium network for TWC’s digital customers will pick up new carriage in Lincoln, Nebraska and Rochester, NY with expanded platforms for Time Warner customers in New York, New Jersey and Syracuse. In addition to the premium channel, here! subscribers in New York and New Jersey, Syracuse, Rochester and Lincoln will also receive the networks’ video-on-demand (VOD) service.

Nielsen Sports has unveiled a Comparative Analysis, based on the company’s Sponsorship Scorecard service, which will allow sports franchises and sponsors to evaluate the effectiveness of sponsor-placed media in four major sporting events in the last year. The events include NASCAR Daytona 500, U.S. Open Men’s Final, NFL Super Bowl and NCAA Rose Bowl, and the top three sponsors of each event were ranked by average number of television impressions per hour among A25-54 (Nielsen defines an impression as the number of individuals exposed to an advertisement). Sponsors can measure their return on investment by matching impressions across different sports. For example, the top sponsor of the U.S. Open Men’s Final, JPMorgan Chase achieved 162 million impressions per hour, while the Super Bowl’s biggest sponsor, Motorola, achieved nearly the same amount at 157 million. Furthermore, franchises and sponsors can evaluate which in-stadium locations provide the largest number of impressions. Nifty tool, huh?

* PRODUCTION / CASTING / DEVELOPMENT *

Showtime‘s The L Word has added Cybill Shepherd to its fourth season cast for appearances in 11 of the 12 eps. Cybill’s character, a married mother and Jennifer Beals’ character’s boss, will begin to question her sexuality.

* EXECUTIVE MOVES *

Alfred Haber Distribution, Inc. will expand its operations to include a west coast division. Leading the new Los Angeles office will be Ron Glazer as VP/Business Development and Christiane Nicolini-Glazer as VP/International Sales.

Benjamin Tatta has been appointed SVP/Business Development for Rainbow Advertising Sales Corporation, effective immediately. Based in New York, Benjamin will report directly to David L. Kline, President/COO.

Tanya Lopez has been named Director/Corporate Communications for mun2 based at the network’s headquarters at City Walk, Universal Studios in Los Angeles. In this newly created position, Tanya will head the daily supervision of both business/trade and consumer/programming for external and internal communications, and manage the company’s brand positioning and reputation. She will report both to Alex Pels, GM for mun2 and to Alfredo Richard, VP/Corporate Communications for Telemundo.

Bob Greene has been promoted to the new position of EVP/Advanced Services at Starz Entertainment Group LLC. Reporting to Robert B. Clasen, President/CEO, Bob is responsible for all new media including broadband and cellular.

* RATINGS *

Friday – A18-49 Analysis: NBC took the lead Friday night in a very tight race with 1.8/6 A18-49, according to fast affiliate ratings from Nielsen Media Research. NBC’s Dateline with 1.8/7 stated off with a win at 8p. It was a three-way tie at 9p for first with CBS’ Close to Home rerun, the first hour of NBC’s Last Comic Standing encore and FOX’s second hour of the rebroadcast movie Lara Croft Tomb Raider all delivering 1.7/6. Then at 10p, it was a two-way split for #1 between ABC with 20/20 and CBS with a repeat of Numb3rs, both grabbing a 2.0/7. NBC’s final hour of Last Comic Standing was right there, too, at 2.0/6.

The History Channel presents This Day in History:
1944 – Allied Forces in World World II launched the largest amphibious attack in history as they stormed the beaches of Normandy France.  Their troops included nearly 175,000 soliders, 6,000 aircraft and 6,000 naval vessels. Their goal was to win a beachhead in France in the effort to defeat Adolph Hitler’s Nazi Germany. There were nearly 5,000 Allied casualties, but the campaign was considered one of the great successes of the war.
