Panel measurement has long been criticized for skewing online measurement results, conflicting with internal server logs and fomenting doubt among media buyers. ComScore unveiled a new “panel centric hybrid” online measurement methodology that combines the company’s 2 million-person global panel with server metrics to try and provide a more granular level of reporting and finally account for 100% of a Web site’s audience. comScore clients can choose to implement hybrid measurement for their own sites by embedding “beacon” calls on user-requested content. comScore says it has built out a robust infrastructure to handle the requests and has partnered with Akamai to use their Web Application Acceleration Solutions to deliver fast response times. comScore also announced it is launching a new “universe report” system to  provide visibility into access of web sites from mobile devices and computers outside of home and work, (i.e. internet cafes, schools, libraries, and other non-private locations.)

Google discussed plans at New York’s Book Expo to introduce a digital book publishing platform to compete directly with Amazon and the Kindle, per The NYTimes. Publishers welcome the move as a way to lower the initially high pricing of the nascent format. The e-book retail program would be separate from its public domain book-scanning project, which is currently the focus of a Justice Dept. inquiry.
E! signed a deal with away-from-home platform IdeaCast to provide live programming to the company’s Health Club TV feed, installed in nearly 1,000 health clubs nationwide. Featured programming will include excerpts from E! News, The Soup, True Hollywood Story and Girls Next Door.
Nickelodeon’s casual gaming site AddictingGames is hosting a TV/web gaming showdown on June 27 showcasing the site’s most popular games. Users themselves will vote online from 10 categories of games beginning June 3 and the winners will be revealed during a primetime event “Showdown” that will air on Nickelodeon and stream on AddictingGames.com. The site posted its best month to date in April, registering 11.6 million uniques according to ComScore.
Original Crackle series Angel of Death starring Zoe Bell, Lucy Lawless and Ted Raimi is being packaged as a 90-minute feature film, to be broadcast on Spike TV on July 25 and released by Sony Pictures Home Entertainment on DVD on July 28.

Cinedigm Digital Cinema Corp is hosting a live virtual Q&A for a screening of The Narrows in cinemas equipped with its satellite-based digital broadcasting systems. Audiences will be able submit questions to cast members of the mob-themed movie including Vincent D’Onofrio, Kevin Zegers and Sophia Bush via text message and Facebook during a special opening night screening of the film in New York on June 19. Moviegoers in 17 cities will be able to participate in the event.
London-based online secondary ticket exchange Seatwave closed on $17 million in fourth round funding led by Accel Partners. Seatwave, which allows fans to buy and sell tickets for sporting events, music or theatrical performances, is the top European ticket exchange according to comScore, attracting 1.9 million visitors in March 2009.

Absolut Vodka is launching a multiplatform ad campaign with IFC and Sundance Channel to celebrate Gay Pride Month in June. The centerpiece of the campaign is a short-form series, produced exclusively for Absolut by IFC and Sundance, called “I’m Coming Out,” consisting of 4 one-minute vignettes that highlight “coming out” stories. The vignettes, which will air on both networks alongside gay pride-themed programming, will also be available online at IFC.com and Sundancechannel.com.

Disney Online closed on its acquisition of the Mom-oriented web sites of Kaboose Inc. including kaboose.com, babyzone.com, AmazingMoms and ParentZone. The merger, which will combine Disney’s 2.6 million uniques footprint with Kaboose’s 3.6 million member audience, will make up a new division dubbed the Disney Online Mom and Family Portfolio, headed by Emily Smith, VP of Disney Online.
Taiwan-based electronic screen maker Prime View Entertainment acquired Cambridge, MA-based E-Ink, the e-paper technology provider used by Amazon, Sony and others.

Sony is set to unveil its new smaller, lighter version of its PlayStation Portable (PSP) portable gaming device at E3 today, details of which were leaked during a interview on Qore, Sony’s online gaming magazine featuring Veronica Belmont. (Here’s the June edition on YouTube.) The “PSP Go” will have a 3.8-inch screen, weigh 43% less than the current PSP, support Bluetooth, contain 16 GB of internal flash memory and take additional memory modules. Sony hopes the new PSP, due out this fall, will become a Trojan Horse through which to sell games, movies and TV shows through the PlayStation Network. Yet typical to Sony, it’s loaded with propriety restrictions; for instance PSP Go users can only download content via WiFi by connecting through the PS3 console.
T-Mobile will release the HTC Magic smartphone as its next Google Android-compatible device later this year. Although it’s not that much smaller than the G1, it sports a much sleeker look and feel and exchanges a physical keyboard with a larger screen that will feature a new iPhone-like on-screen keyboard – a first for the Android platform.
The new National Geographic Games banner unveiled its first slate of games for the consoles, online, mobile and virtual world markets via partnerships with game publishers Black Bean Games, Smart Bomb Interactive and RealNetwork’ RealGames. Italy-based Black Bean games will develop 8 console games with NGG that incorporate themes of ancient and lost worlds, wildlife, geography and natural wonders. Smart Bomb Interactive’s NGG titles will target kids 5-11 focusing on animals, geography and exploration. The RealGames’ titles will be immersive casual PC games released globally via Real’s distribution channels.


NBCU‘s Jean-Briac (JB) Perrette has been promoted to President, Digital & Affiliate Distribution and Content Distribution Strategy from his previous role of President, Digital Distribution. His expanded duties will include oversight of NBCU’s broadcast distribution relationships, working with John Eck, President of NBC Network and Media Works. He will also work to develop new multiplatform content distribution strategies. JB will continue to report to Jeff Gaspin, President and Chief Operating Officer, Universal Television Group.
Discovery Communications appointed Brent Spitzer to the role of VP/Digital Advertising Sales, Eastern Region. He will be based in New York and report to Kathleen Kayse, EVP/Digital Advertising Sales.
NetShelter Technology Media hired Anne Marie Miller to the newly created position of VP/Strategic Accounts. Based out of NetShelter’s San Francisco headquarters, Anne Marie will be responsible for relationships with the company’s central marketing partners including Microsoft, HP and Intel. She will report to Michele Sweeney, Chief Sales and Marketing Officer of NetShelter.
Online gaming studio Turbine named Beau Paradowski as its new CFO, responsible for overseeing worldwide financial operations of Turbine and its franchises. He reports to Jim Crowley, President and CEO of Turbine, Inc.
Adify has appointed former Turn Inc. VP Glenn Fishback as SVP of Media Sales; Lee Hoffman as Eastern Region VP of Media Sales; and Jonny Byrne as UK Commercial Director, to build out the sales team for Adify’s new division, Adify Media. 
Comcast SportsNet Chicago named former Universal Sports marketer T.K. Gore as its Director of Digital Media, a newly created position. He will report to James J. Corno, President of Comcast SportsNet Chicago.

That means library songs from The Boss, The Clash, Johnny Cash and OutKast. eMusic, which offers a Zune-like subscription model, was one of the first online music distributors to selll DRM-free tunes, so eMusic tracks play on virtually any MP3 player. The site combines a clever hybrid of curating and crowdsourcing to point users to new songs. Sony hopes to get listeners interested in its songs as users stumble upon famous artists that are cross-referenced with indie groups. eMusic is also a godsend for music lovers who are on a budget, with pricing plans that average between 40-50 cents per song.
