Good Morning, it’s Tuesday, June 26, 2007 and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
Public interest group Electronic Frontier Foundation urged a California court to overturn a lawsuit brought by a group of major studios against peer-to-peer download site TorrentSpy, claiming users’ privacy is at stake. The suit, filed by Columbia, Paramount, Fox, Universal and others, accused TorrentSpy of copyright violations, enabling illegal downloads of protected movies and TV shows. Last month a federal judge ordered the company to turn over server log data containing the personal IP addresses of its users. The EFF says this would open a Pandora’s Box that could eventually make every keystroke on every digital device stored in RAM subject to discovery laws.
~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~
AMC will provide cable affiliates with both standard and high definition VOD content of promotional programming to go with its new original drama Mad Men, set on Madison Avenue in the 1960’s. Several MSOs will offer outtakes, interviews and exclusive behind-the-scenes content to be put up on VOD or to be offered on the MSOs’ broadband portals, leading up the show’s July 19 premier.
MTV Networks‘ AddictingGames.com developed its first web application for Facebook, offering viral pop-culture games such as “Paris Stamping” (an original from VH1 Games), “Dress Paris in Jail” and “Dress Up Hillary” and “Stunt Dirt Bike.” Facebook users can embed up to 75 games on their profile pages, which will be swapped out regularly.
NBC Universal launched its third multiplatform AST Dew Tour with tons of HD, VOD, and mobile action sports content. NBCU will offer cable/satellite/telco operators standard def or HD on demand highlights and broadband clips to go along with 33 hours of coverage on NBC and USA Network. An additional 23 hours of coverage is being simulcast for the first time on NBC2Go, Verizon V CAST channel powered by MediaFLO.
HGTV will offer episodes of the second season of Design Star on demand, beginning the day following the Design Star Casting Special airing July 22 at 10 pm ET/PT. On demand viewers can also access previews of upcoming episodes and behind-the-scenes footage.
LifetimeTV.com‘s fast-growing casual games component is partnering with Large Animal Games to create a new fashion-themed game to be available across multiple platforms this Christmas, including online and mobile. LifetimeTV.com has launched a dozen web games since 2005.
Yahoo! Telemundo launched “Gana Mi Casa,” its first made-for-broadband home improvement series sponsored exclusively by GMC. The series features a different Hispanic family each week rewarded with free room makeovers and includes bloopers, makeover tips, online surveys and Spanish-language message boards.
Bravo has added several interactive extensions with this season’s Top Chef series, enabling live voting via WAP-enabled phones, iTV polling and trivia for Dish customers and access to all the recipes enacted on the show via Bravotv.com‘s food portal. BravoTV is also featuring several new features around Hey Paula, the reality show kicking off the network’s third night of original programming this Thursday.
Hubbard Media‘s movie-centric multiplatform service ReelzChannel unveiled a new summer line up of programming. New shows include comedy series What I Learned About (Blank) From the Movies, premiering July 8 at 8 pm; Movie Takes, featuring short form man-on-the-street interviews; and Miscasting, animated interstitials that ask what if so and so were cast in a given role they’re obviously ill-suited for.
Fitness portal ExerciseTV founded by “Body by Jake” Global relaunched to enhance its social networking tools and better integrate with the company’s TV-based on demand offerings. Users can search for workout videos by category, save their favorites and rate the videos and trainers.
~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~
Video search start up Blinkx signed a deal with RealNetworks to become the video search engine for the new RealPlayer. Users will be able to search Blinkx’s index of more than 12 million hours of online video. Blinkx also announced partnerships with InfoSpace and Lycos to offer video search capabilities to their network of sites. Infospace runs metasearch engines Dogpile.com, WebFetch and WebCrawler. Lycos operates the “Lycos Mix” service that enables users to compile personalized video playlists from YouTube, MySpace and other video sites. Finally, the Blinkx AdHoc platform launched in beta format yesterday, allowing advertisers to buy key works spoken or contextualized within video content.
Professional social networking site Linkedin is planning to follow Facebook‘s lead and provide an open source platform for developers within the next nine months. Let’s hope it’s sooner – 9 months is like 5 years in the digital world.
Next New Network‘s fashion destination Threadbanger announced a new summer series “How-To Tuesdays”, launching today at 12 pm ET and running for 8 straight weeks. The show features practical DIY projects including tutorials on “How to make a sun visor from recycled materials” and “How to make board shorts from business suits.” The series was spawned by a successful run of how-to webisodes on YouTube.
Photo sharing service photobucket unveiled a new version of its image and video hosting plug in allowing users to search for content without leaving partner sites. Photobucket’s media plugs in are used by sites such as RockYou, which offers slideshow, text and voicemail widgets to enhance blogs and personal profile pages.
Ohio-based Massillon Cable TV pitched the NAB an interesting idea to help ease the digital transition, according to Multichannel News. It suggests having cable operators provide free basic service to homes for the first 7 years, so no tuner boxes will be required to receive digital broadcast signals. Cable operators would agree to carry local broadcasters’ signals in exchange for not having to pay retransmission fees during that time.
Aegis Group acquired the ad serving business of Bluestream.com for $12.5 million. The company, which specializes in delivery of rich media content online and through email, will be folded into Aegis’ digital marketing company Isobar.
Microsoft named Reprise Media to manage search marketing across all of its products, working with Interpublic Group’s McCann WorldGroup to run search campaigns integrated with current online and offline strategies. Reprise Media was recently acquired by Interpublic and has already begun working on marketing campaigns for Office, Zune and Vista.
Time Inc. named online ad firm Quigo to manage digital advertising for all its web properties, including Time.com, People.com, CNNMoney.com and SI.com. Quigo’s AdSonar technology allows advertisers target specific pages of website in order to better contour ad placement. Time had been using Yahoo for several of its sites prior to the deal.
Digitalsmiths, creator of broadband video contextual ad firm VideoSense, raised $6 million in Series A funding led by The Aurora Funds and Chrysalis Ventures. Digitalsmiths will use the money to expand its sales and marketing ranks and speed the deployment of the video-indexing and contextual ad-matching solution.
Apple’s iTunes was the #3 music retailer in the U.S. during the first quarter, according to The NPD Group, passing Amazon.com and Target in units sold to garner a 9.8% market share. Digital sales have been the one bright spot for the retail music business, which has seen CD album sales decline 16% to 212 million units so far this year, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Sales of digital songs are up 49% during the same period.
There’s a class divide between Facebook and MySpace, according to a new study from the University of California-Berkeley. Facebook users are more likely to be Caucasian, college educated and well off. The MySpace community tends to be more working class, with little or no college. Seeing as how Facebook started as a student-only service, this isn’t that surprising.
Online social radio network BlogTalkRadio hired Lisa Padilla as VP/Marketing, to be based in San Francisco. She has been working as a consultant to clients such as Yahoo! and Philips Electronics.
Tivo announced CFO Steve Sordello is leaving the company after less than a year on the job. He said he will stay on to assist with the transition until a replacement is found.
Digital post production house fluid hired freelance composer Ryan Lott as its newest in house composer. Ryan has been commissioned to write scores for several major dance companies and museums including a recent series featured at the Guggenheim.
Multiplatform LGBT network here! promoted Billy Cogar to Director of Development, reporting to Meredith Kadlec, VP/Original Programming.
DietTeleivsion launched yesterday with a wealth of free dieting tools and social networking functions. Build a personal profile and the site will recommend recipes, exercise regimes and meal/food shopping plans. Text meals from your cell phone to update your meal log. “Link up” is the social networking part, where members give each other stars for supporting each other. There’s even a ticker that scrolls across the bottom that lists the calorie counts of snacks and foods to avoid such as the Dairy Queen’s Large Chocolate Malt (1320 cal).
