Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Tuesday, June 19, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing.

Making the move from tentative list, Kids’ WB on The CW revealed The Spectacular Spider-Man is the tit official title of the upcoming Marvel animated series from Culver Entertainment.  The series is slated to bow Saturday mornings on Kids’ WB in early 2008.

Aardman Animation has revealed its current feature film development slate, on the heels of its new multi-year first look pact with Sony Pictures. Aardman Animation’s movie line-up includes, The Cat Burglars, a project penned by Matthew Graham and Ashley Pharoah with director Steve Box.  Additionally, Peter Lord, a co-founder of Aardman, plans to direct a feature film version of Pirates, which is based the kid’s book series by Gideon Defoe.  A holiday movie project, Operation Rudolph, is also in development with Peter Baynham announced its slate of animated features.  Additionally, Nick Park is working on a yet to be announced movie … and no it isn’t another Wallace & Gromit movie.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Nickelodeon US has picked up a second season of 26 episodes of the preschool series Wow! Wow! Wubbzy!  Produced by Bolder Media, in association with Starz Media, Wow! Wow! Wubbzy! is set to bow on Discovery Kids Latin America, Cartoon Networks in India and the Philippines, PT Lativi Media in Indonesia, OTC in Benelux and RaiSat in Italy.  The series currently airs on in the US on Nick Jr. and Noggin, and on Nick Jr. UK and ABC and Nick in Australia, as well as on mobile phones via Verizon and sprint and VOD on Comcast, Charter, Cablevision, Verizon FiOS and COX.  The weekly Wubbcast podcasts continue to be available via iTunes.

This summer Disney Channel will premiere new episodes of the preschool series Little Einsteins.  The new episodes, which will debut on Monday June 25, July 30 and August 20 all at 8a, will introduce viewers to noted composers and artists throughout history from around the world.

Taffy Entertainment has sealed a deal with MCM to bring the anime TV series Bleach to France, beginning September 2007.  Targeted to teens, Bleach premiered in the US in fall 2006 on Cartoon Network.  Produced by TV Tokyo, Dentsu and studio Pierrot, Bleach is based on creator Tite Kubo’s manga that was serialized in Shonen Jump.

PorchLight Entertainment has inked a deal with The Canadian Broadcasting Company to premiere the CGI animated series Animalia (40×26′) in Canada in fall 2007.  The Canadian debut of the series follows its premiere in the UK on the CBBC.  Distributed internationally by BBC Worldwide and in North America by PorchLight Entertainment, Animalia will be broadcast on PBS (US) as well as on Network Ten and Nickelodeon (Australia).  Produced by Burberry/Lux Monkey/DoubleBase Productions in association with PorchLight Entertainment, Animalia series is based on the picture book of the same name by Graeme Base.

The stop-motion animated series Miffy & Friends (21×30′) will debut on public TV stations in the US from July 7.  Based on the books by author/illustrator Dick Bruna, WLIW New York is distributing the series to public TV stations. 

PBS Kids is set to debut the mixed animation/live-action series Mama Mirabelle’s Home Movies (26×30′) from September 2007.  Starring Vanessa Williams as the voice of Mama, the series is a co-production of National Geographic Kids Entertainment, BBC/CBeebies and King Rollo Films.  Mama Mirabelle’s Home Movies features a group of baby animal characters, including a cheetah cub, zebra foal, elephant calf, and monkeys who gather with Mama Mirabelle (a maternal elephant) each episode to watch videos of various animals in a range of environments, with Mama there to answer questions.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Lots of licensing news as the Licensing Show gets underway in New York City

Walden Media has appointed 20th Century Fox Licensing & Merchandising as its worldwide licensing agent for Walden’s future movie projects, as well as those of its sister company Bristol Bay Productions, divisions of Anschutz Film Group.  Under the pact, Fox Licensing will develop licensed merchandise and retail programs for movie produced by Walden Media.  Upcoming projects for which Fox Licensing is developing merchandise programs include The Dark is Rising (opening October 5, 2007), Nim’s Island (opening April 25, 2008), City of Ember (opening October 10, 2008) and The Tortoise & the Hippo.

Entertainment Rights’ Big Idea is launching a licensing campaign in support of its 2008 Universal feature film release, the Pirates Who Don’t Do Anything  A VeggieTales Movie.  Products based on the movie, from new licensing partners, are slated to begin rolling out October 2007: Blue Box (bathtub toys, pirate ship playset); Manhattan Toy (finger puppets); Pint Sized Productions (collectible plush); Talicor (puzzles); Crossroads Apparel (toddler/youth sized T-shirts); Publisher – Thomas Nelson (six new book titles and curriculum for the titles based on the movie).

HIT Entertainment has entered into a deal with Chapman Entertainment to serve as the rights manager for the preschool properties Fifi and the Flowertots and the upcoming series Roary The Racing Car in North America and Japan.  Under the deal HIT will handle rights across broadcast, licensing and merchandising, publishing, home entertainment and strategic partnerships across North America and Japan for both properties. 

Granada Ventures, the merchandise/licensing/publishing unit of the UK broadcaster ITV, has inked a deal with Hidden City Games to license Bella Sara consumer products worldwide, excluding Scandinavia.  Granada Ventures will be responsible for all product categories except collectible cards, for which Hidden City Games retains sole rights.   Targeted to Girls 5-12, Bella Sara is a fantasy-horse focused property that features trading cards and an integrated website ( http://www.bellasara.com ). The trading card game debuted in the US in March 2007.  Originally created by Denmark-based Conceptcard, Hidden City Games is the exclusive licensor of Bella Sara for worldwide distribution outside of Scandinavia.

Disney Interactive Studios unveiled plans to release video games based on Disney Princess brand beginning fall 2007.  Designed for and targeted specifically to younger girls, Disney Princess: Enchanted Journey will debut for Wii, PlayStation 2 and Windows PC systems, while Disney Princess: Magical Jewels, also bowing fall 2007, will be available for Nintendo DS.  Enchanted Journey is published by Disney Interactive Studios and developed by Papaya Studio and Magical Jewels is developed by 1st Playable Productions, the latter also features multiplayer modes. All of the titles will carry a rating of E for everyone.

FremantleMedia Enterprises has inked a raft of new licensing deals for its classic kids’ brand, DangerMouse.  Deals in the UK include, Simiffy’s (kid/adult costumes and accessories); and renewing its deal is Bravado International Group (men’s T-shirts, hoodies, headwear) – these products will be available in music and online stores in the UK (e.g. HMV, Virgin, MVC, ENVY, Urban Outfitters and play.com and truffleshuffle.co.uk).  Additionally, Global Licensing Limited (men/women’s t-shirts and sweatshirts) products will be available at UK retailers (e.g. Tesco, Asda, Topshop, New Look, Woolworths and John Lewis), and PMS International will produce plush toys and key rings.

JAKKS Pacific, Inc has inked a North American Master Toy License deal with Big Tent Entertainment for The Wiggles brand.  According to the terms of the deal Child Guidance, JAKKS’ preschool division, will develop, manufacture and distribute a line of toys and related products based on The Wiggles in categories including plush, preschool toys, musical toys, role play, electronic, bath toys, foam puzzles, playsets outdoor products and craft and activity sets among others.  JAKKS plans to launch it’s The Wiggles line in fall 2008.

In other Miffy news, Big Tent Entertainment, the North American licensing agent for Miffy and Friends and Play Along are partnering to launch a new tween-targeted Miffy plush line that will be available beginning fall 2007.

Bolder Media has inked a new group of licensing deals for Wow! Wow! Wubbzy!, which it produces with Starz Media.  New license partners include Ty, Jakks Pacific, University Games, Accessory Innovations and Little Kids.  Bolder Media handles worldwide licensing and merchandising for the property.

Busch Entertainment Corporation (BEC), parent company of SeaWorld, has entered into a partnership with marine life artist Wyland to help further its goal of making “blue” the “new green.”  Together SeaWorld and Wyland are developing products aimed at helping to conserve waterways and marine life.  Additionally, the artist’s work/products are featured in specific areas within retail stores at BEC’s parks including Busch Gardens, Discovery Cove and SeaWorld.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Marvel Entertainment, Inc. is cultivating the product development and merchandising of its consumer products categories with the appointment of JoAnn McLaughlin as EVP/Merchandising and welcoming Susan Fields to the company as VP/Merchandising.  They will be responsible for overseeing the merchandising arena for Marvel, with McLaughlin focusing on hardline categories in the US and toys, games and related products internationally, and Fields will focus on Softlines in North America.  The two women will also be key in Marvel’s direct-to-retail efforts, helping to merchandise and develop licensed product lines that reflect the company’s overall brand strategy. A 15-year veteran of Marvel, McLaughlin most recently served as COO/Marvel Toys division.  Prior to this Fields was Chief Marketing, Merchandising, and Operating Officer, Scott Evans Consulting.
