Good morning. It’s Tuesday, June 18, 2013, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
ESPN is hitting Wimbledon this year with 140 live hours on ESPN and ESPN2 as well as highlights and encores of finals on ABC and nine screens on ESPN3. Coverage starts Monday, June 24 and runs through the Ladies’ and Gentlemen’s Championships, Saturday, July 6, and Sunday, July 7, respectively. Chris Fowler will call matches and serve as studio host along with Mike Tirico, while Hannah Storm hosts Breakfast at Wimbledon. After debuting “cross court coverage” a year ago, ESPN HD and ESPN2 HD will again both be live for three days to start the second week as ESPN spotlights Centre Court while ESPN2 carries matches from Court One and elsewhere. On June 30, ABC offers a three-hour review of the first week at 3p.
Sunday night’s Game 5 of the NBA Finals generated an 11.4 overnight rating for ABC, off 9.5% from a 12.6 score on a Thursday night a year ago, according to Nielsen. In local markets, Game 5 drew a 37.6 metered market rating in San Antonio and a 28.8 in Miami. Game 6 is set to take place tonight at 9p on ABC.
Saturday night’s Stanley Cup Final Game 2 averaged 3.964 million viewers on NBC Sports Network, per Nielsen, to make it the most-watched NHL game in the network’s history. The matchup, which drew a 2.0 household rating, ranks as the second-most watched event ever on NBCSN, trailing only the U.S. Women’s Soccer gold medal match at the London 2012 Olympics. Locally, Boston led all markets with a 22.5 rating, followed by Providence (15.8) and Chicago (15.6).
The final round of the US Open on NBC on Sunday handed the network with a 6.1 overnight Nielsen rating, off 8% from last year’s west coast (and easy coast prime time) telecast but up nearly 20% from the 2011 Open that took place in Maryland (5.1).
Meanwhile, ESPN reports that its coverage of the US Open last Thursday ranked as the second most-viewed Thursday telecast of the event ever on the network and the highest-rated since 2002. In addition, its live telecast of Friday evening’s play was the highest-rated east coast venue Friday prime telecast since 2002. Thursday’s coverage drew a 1.9 household rating, with an average of 2.2 million viewers, according to Nielsen. Friday delivered a 2.0 score with 2.45 million viewers.
Wrapping up the ratings for the day, Univision Deportes announced that its coverage of the opening soccer matches of the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup saw a triple digit spike on Univision and UniMas compared to the opening matches of the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup. The opening weekend of the games averaged 1.8 million Total Viewers 2+, 1.1 million Adults 18-49 and 547,000 Adults 18-34, marking increases of 215% , 215% and 151%, respectively versus the opening weekend in 2009.
NBC has recruited NFL front office veteran Scott Pioli as the newest member of the Football Night in America family. Pioli will also appear regularly on Pro Football Talk.
HBO made it official, announcing that it will once again team up with NFL Films and the Cincinnati Bengals for the newest edition of Hard Knocks. The reality series will kick off its five-episode eighth season on Tuesday, Aug. 6 at 10p on HBO. For the series, a 24-person NFL Films crew will follow the Bengals will hold camp at Paul Brown Stadium, shooting more than 1,250 hours of footage shot over the course of the series.
ESPN announced that it has chosen Rio de Janeiro’s Clube dos Marimbas, a sailing club on the southern tip of Copacabana Beach, as its production headquarters for the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil. Overall, more than 280 original hours of coverage will run across ESPN’s English-language networks ABC, ESPN, ESPN2, ESPN3, ESPNEWS and WatchESPN in the US from June 12 July 13. ESPN will build two studios one for ESPN Deportes and ESPN International’s game-around-the-game programming, and the other, a multi-purpose studio for ESPN’s English-language U.S. networks.
Coverage of the 100th Tour de France is set to begin with the Tour de France Preview Show hosted by Todd Harris tonight at 7p on NBCSN. p.m. ET on NBC Sports Network. The show will take an in-depth look at the 100th edition of the Tour de France, the race route and include profile features on competing cyclists. In addition, the show will include look-backs to historical moments in the Tour de France. All 21 stages of the race are set to run from Saturday, June 29, to Sunday, July 21.
Boxeo Telemundo on Friday at 11:35p with a card anchored by Mexico’s Julian “Chicano” Rivera and California native Matthew Villanueva at the Plaza Condesa Auditorium in Mexico City with the WBO Latin Super Featherweight Title on the line. Major League Baseball Properties and Chevrolet announced that the vehicle brand will be the title sponsor of the 2013 Chevrolet Home Run Derby, which will be held Monday, July 15 at Citi Field and televised by ESPN at 8p. The Chevrolet Home Run Derby will also continue to raise funds for charities including Boys & Girls Clubs of America as well as MLB’s Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities (RBI) program.
The San Francisco 49ers inked a fantasy football and social media deal with Yahoo!, according to the San Jose Mercury News, that allow fans to upload photos to Flickr during the game and possibly see their pics on the stadium’s big screen. Fans can also visit a Yahoo Fantasy Football lounge inside the stadium.
Digital Fields
Sporting News Media released their third annual survey into US sports media consumption. The report, dubbed US Sports Media Consumption Report 2013 and produced in conjunction with Kantar Media and TV Sports Markets, surveyed over 1,000 American adults aged 18+ in February 2013, and found over a third of sports fans use smartphones to access sports content. Of those fans, 36% access sports content via their mobile device at least once per day and a quarter of US sports fans are now using social networking platforms to follow sports. The majority of social fans follow sports on Facebook (77%), followed by YouTube (47%) and Twitter (33%).
LiveU announced a partnership with leading live cloud and social video editing, publishing and distribution platform SnappyTV. The partnership is designed to offer a “streamlined solution for lightning-speed posting of clips from live events, while the event is still taking place.” The New York Giants are using the alliance to post real-time video clips from team events.
