Cynopsis: Classified Advantage
06.11.13

Good morning. It’s Tuesday, June 11, 2013, and this is your weekly issue of Cynopsis: Classified Advantage!

Welcome to Leadership Lessons, the regular column that focuses on conversations with senior managers and leaders in the TV world, speaking candidly about their professional journeys and how that informs what they look for when hiring new employees. Today, meet Charley Humbard, President & CEO of the UP network.

When was the first time you were in a leadership position?
At a production company in Atlanta called Crawford Productions. It was the first time I led a team, first on the production side and then on the sales side.

What was an early leadership lesson for you?
I had to understand that I was there to serve my team, and not just think that my staff was there to take care of me. The best leaders are humble.

Tell us about a management decision you wish you had handled differently.
When I was building a staff, I’d look at it like a family, thinking, That person is someone I’d love to hang out with. But I had to realize we’re not a family – we’re a team. You have to look at who has the strengths you need; who are your high performers? You need to be like a coach, to think about how you can help your people excel, and move positions if that’s necessary. And you need to be aware of how your needs change as your business evolves. You have to have a different set of standards when you look at it as a team rather than a family. And you know what? It’s lonely at the top.

What qualities do you look for when making a hire?
We’re building a business and a brand. So I look for people who reflect our brand of value-based entertainment. I interview everyone from who will be at the front desk to the most senior jobs. And when I do that, it’s not necessarily for their expertise. It’s to see what makes them tick. Are they smart? Are they driven? Do they share our values?

And what’s been the result of that mindset?
We have had four people at our front desk. They’ve all been promoted into positions in digital, programming, production, and marketing. We have made it a point that no one gets in who doesn’t have the potential to be a leader. It’s worth it.
