Cynopsis: DIGITAL

06/10/08

Good morning, it’s Tuesday, June 10, 2008, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

Steve Jobs didn’t disappoint the faithful, unveiling the 3G iPhone at the Apple developer’s conference keynote, promising a July 11 simultaneous launch in 22 countries. Yes, it will start at $199 for the 8GB model in the U.S. – one third of what the original iPhone sold for. (Sorry, early adopters.) Yes, it will sport of a bunch of new applications – games, blog tools, MLB baseball apps – that take advantage of its newfound speed and GPS capability. Developers from companies such as eBay and the AP took turns demo-ing what they are working on. Business users stand to gain much from the new “iPhone 2.0” software release, including integration with Microsoft Office & iWork and the ability to save emailed images to your photo library. Oh, and it’s coming out in white as well as black. No word yet on what AT&T will charge for 3G data services.

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

ESPN is teeing off its US Open coverage with an ambitious slate of multiplatform programming totaling 15 platforms in all. Highlights include:

  • The addition of a third live iTV feed focused on Torrey Pines’ signature Par 3 third hole,
  • viewable in a combined 25 million homes on DirecTV (in HD where available) and Dish
  • Live mobile video coverage on Thursday and Friday via Verizon’s V Cast service
  • Expanded ESPN360.com coverage including 6 channels of U.S. Open programming. Online viewers can watch live coverage of hole #3 as well as coverage of golf’s marquee threesome: Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Adam Scott

Yahoo launched 4 new Latin American portals: Yahoo! Chile, Yahoo! Peru, Yahoo! Colombia and Yahoo! Venezuela.

You always look better when you’re portrayed in the movies. Leonardo DiCaprio has signed on to produce and star in a project about Atari founder Nolan Bushnell, written by Brian Hecker and Craig Sherman, reports Variety.

CABLEready secured an exclusive deal with Entertainment In Motion to distribute entertainment programming to the worldwide airline market.

Jetix Europe
signed an agreement with Disney-ABC International Television, an affiliate of its major shareholder, for distribution of Jetix channels via cable, satellite, IPTV and PPV across Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

Social networking widget maker RockYou raised an additional $35 million in third round financing led by DCM as it works to keep pace with rivals such as Slide, Gigya and Clearspring. (Slide raised a whopping $50 million back in Jan.) RockYou, an OpenSocial member, says its network of apps now reach 87.5 million monthly uniques accounting for 2.7 billion page views.

MyToons.com upgraded its site to enable streaming of original animated content in HD format, a first for an online animation site.

Sony‘s Crackle announced a line up of 9 original short-form shows including renewals of The Purple Onion as well as three new series launches:

  • The Jace Hall Show is 13-part short-form lifestyle series created and hosted by film, television and videogame producer Jason Hall, now available on Crackle. It offers sneak peeks into the entertainment and gaming world with a mix of stunts and interviews
  • In Take Away Shows music video director Vincent Moon will introduce brand new music videos from bands including Rosebuds, Bodies of Water and Walkmen
  • That Guy, from Matt Vascellaro and Kent Haines, spoofs annoying strangers that get under our skins

Hulu has added full-length episodes of two Comedy Central series – The Daily Show with Jon Stewart and The Colbert Report. Additional new series to be included later on this month come from PBS: such as NOVA, Carrier, Scientific American Frontiers, and Wired Science, later this month.

The lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and ally (LGBTA) community has a new home on the web with FriendsYouKnow.com, a social networking website launching just in time for Pride month.

~ GADGETS & APPS ~

In an interview with the San Francisco Chronicle seemingly timed to counter some of Steve Jobs’ thunder, Microsoft‘s Robby Bach described Windows Mobile as the dominant smart phone platform saying 20 million compatible devices should ship using the software this year alone. He also defended the Zune and its new playlist-sharing site Zune Social, which has grown to 2 million members. Regarding the Xbox 360, one of Toshiba’s charter partners in now defunct HD DVD, he said there was “no plans” to switch to the Blu-Ray platform anytime soon.

Sony Pictures Television launched a new application on Facebook to kick-off the second season of My Boys premiering on Thursday, June 12 at 9:30 p, ET/PT on TBS. “M.A.S.H.” allows users to forecast their future, sharing their randomly determined, fictitious fate with friends.

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

The FCC launched a proceeding on whether to let video program distributors remotely block consumers from recording recently released movies on their DVRs, reports Ars Technica. The FCC currently restricts the use of the Selectable Output Control (SOC) technology that blocks such access but the MPAA is seeking a waiver on the restriction in the case of HD movies broadcast prior to their release on DVD.

Consolidation of the online video sector continues as Toronto-based JumpTV is merging with Plainview, NY-based NeuLion, a start-up that powers online to TV video streaming for clients such as the NHL. The 50/50 deal, expected to close in October, combines JumpTV’s sports and ethnic programming for Hispanic, Chinese, Filipino and Arabic speaking audiences with NeuLion’s IPTV set-top and back end businesses.

NewsMarket
has teamed with Akamai to enable faster accessibility to coverage of the Olympics via NewsMarket’s subscriber portal – for both users in China and around the world. The increased capacity will enable global brands to upload, market and deliver news video content to media outlets in 193 countries as soon as it becomes available.

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

YouTube‘s latest scheme for monetizing its massive audience is to let content creators sell their own ads via click-to-expand overlays that run across the bottoms of YouTube videos, per AdAge. Professional content producers have shared in revenue from ads sold by Google so far on their own branded YouTube channels. YouTube will demand the same revenue split for creators’ own ads. Ad revenues at YouTube have nowhere to go but up. The online video juggernaut is expected to earn just $90-$200 million this year, while Google is expected to take in $22 billion overall.

NBC Universal and branded entertainment ad network NextMedium are partnering to help improve the process for identifying, marketing and fulfilling organic product placement opportunities in a timely manner across several NBCU properties. In the initial phase of the partnership, NBCU will make two shows- Life and Psych – available to NextMedium’s Embed technology platform, a full-service management system that helps connect clients to production-level product placement opportunities within the shows.

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

Mobile web usage spiked 24% during the first quarter with AT&T driving a third of the on deck traffic, according to the first Crisp Wireless Index study measuring mobile usage across a sample of 14 million users who surf via Crisp’s mobile web publishing network. While over half of the traffic – 53% – is still driven by on deck portals, off deck searches including manual URL type-ins and bookmark usage in on the rise, accounting for nearly 40% of the traffic. (iPhone searches using the Safari browser count as off deck.)  Other trends include:

  • Search engine traffic did increase slightly to 7.5% in 1Q08 from 7.3% in 4Q07. Local newspapers and television sites were the biggest beneficiaries, with 27% and 12%, respectively, deriving their traffic from search engines
  • Nearly 30% of the search engine traffic for the average nationally branded mobile web site is driven by users who searched the specific property name (i.e. USA Today, Elle, etc.).
  • The top searched mobile term was Obama during the Q1. American Idol was #10 and Hillary came in at #14

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Eric Berger was promoted to SVP/Mobile Entertainment and Digital Networks, Sony Pictures Television (SPT). He oversees SPT’s mobile entertainment group, which develops, produces and domestically distributes products that include personalization, applications, video services, and mobile games. Eric reports to Sean Carey, Senior EVP, SPT.

EMI Music is hiring Linden Lab co-founder and developer guru Cory Ondrejka to the new position of SVP/Digital Strategy.

Omnicom’s digital marketing agency Critical Mass has appointed Jason Theodor to Creative Director. An avid blogger, lecturer, and industry veteran with eleven years experience, Jason will be based in Toronto.  He previously served as Interactive Creative Director at Ogilvy and MacLaren McCann before joining Critical Mass.

Brad Staten was selected by Titan Worldwide to head up its new San Francisco office as VP and GM. Titan Worldwide was recently awarded the 10-year contract to promote the Bay Area Rapid Transit District (BART).

Discovery Communications appointed Julie Robertson to VP/Domestic Licensing and upped Jo Edwards to VP/International Licensing. Julie reports to Discovery Commerce President and GM Patrick Gates. Jo reports to Caleb Weinstein, SVP/Discovery Enterprises International.

~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

The Tribeca Film Institute partnered with Amazon to create Redframe, a hybrid online outlet for independent, limited release films that have yet to break through to mainstream audiences. Redframe will convert film formats to DVD or digital for affordable rates then sell DVDs and digital downloads to customers, splitting the proceeds 50/50 with the rights holder. (The revenue share for DVD sales differs.) The special sauce here is curation and specialized search functions combining social networking, recommendations from friends and colleagues and other methods to help users discovery good stuff. Reframe curators and bloggers include: John Hanhardt (Consulting Senior Curator for Film and Media Arts – Smithsonian American Art Museum) and Kathy Brew (Curator, Former Managing/Co-Director – Margaret Mead Film & Video Festival). Users will have access to about 500 titles initially, some as rentals, some for sale, but Redframe hopes to have more than 10,000 films digitized by year-end.
