Cynopsis: Classified Advantage

07.07.09

Good morning – it’s Tuesday, July 7, 2009, and this is your weekly issue of Cyn opsis: Classified Advantage!  This edition includes the top job listings in the Television, Media and Ad Agency markets, professional development advice from national experts, your Q & A’s with our experts, and a summary of executive moves among top companies.

In early June we reported that according to CareerCast.com/JobSerf Employment Index, the number of jobs posted in May increased significantly from a low in April 2009. In June the trend continued – the number of jobs posted for Managers, Directors, VPs and C-level continued to grow, albeit at a less aggressive pace. The biggest jump happened with C-level applicants seeing a nine point advancement over May to 74. (74 represents the number of jobs available compared to 100 jobs available in the same month two years ago)

The Midwest jumped 6.9 points this month to an index score of 60.9, the Southwest has the highest national index score of 69.4, while the West has the lowest amount of new jobs posted, with a score of 55.9.

Thursday morning brought sobering news. Jobs lost in June exceeded expectations by over 100,000 jobs. Estimates suggested that 363,000 jobs would be lost due to the poor economy. The actual number, however, was much higher at 467,000.  June is the first month since January that the monthly job losses increased over its previous month. The unemployment rate inched higher from 9.4 to 9.5%. Though the payroll number caused the market to tumble on Thursday, most economists characterize it as a bump in the road. They warn there will be more bumps, but still believe that the economy is ready to rebound in the fourth quarter.

Next week: Thinking about a career change?

Cyn opsis: Classified Advantage is a work in progress, designed with our readers in mind. HOW CAN MY RESUME INCREASE MY CHANCES OF GETTING AN INTERVIEW?

By Peter Roche

Every professional recruiter is a bit like a casting director. He or she is looking for THE perfect “player” for the role they are casting  their reputation depends on them making good decisions. So the job of your resume, like a performer’s portfolio, is to make the casting director’s decision easy, and thereby helping you make the first cut to an interview.

If competition for the job  you want was as tough as making it to American Idol  how ready are you? Have you presented yourself attractively enough to make the cut to an interview? Some questions you need to be able to answer with an unequivocal “YES!”

  • Does your resume have a clear “this is who I am and what I can be counted on to deliver to a prospective employer” as a headline?
  • If your resume was a book cover, will it persuade a potential reader to want pick it up and read it  are there easy to grasp specifics of what you’ve got to offer?
  • Have you spent the creative time translating what you “do” into the value you will provide to a prospective employer so that they “get it” quickly and easily?
  • Do the claims you make about your skills, accomplishments and contribution capture what’s unique about you in a “stand-out” way?
  • Have you included a testimonial, a quote from a performance review or a boss or client that validates what you say about how good you are?
  • Finally, would you be enrolled in auditioning this person if you were the casting director?

~ ASK THE EXPERTS ~
Questions from our Readers
Answered by Eli Davidson, M.A
.

I am thinking about changing fields and was wondering what is the best way to get salary ranges for some of the positions that I have read about or hear about? I make a nice salary now and would be willing to take a pay cut to find something that I like but do not want to take too big of a cut and don’t want to waste anyone’s time if the salary range for that position is below what I am looking for.

Truthfully, it is not the best time to change fields (due to the job market). If you have a nice salary, you might consider staying put. However, in my practice I see that the odds can often be overcome. I would suggest you do the research, test the waters, make some phone calls, reach out to your network etc. The best way to get the inside information on any field you are considering is to put out a request for information to your network and see what the market might yield.

What is the best way to find an experienced recruiter that might be able to help in switching careers but staying within the same field, (i.e., to go from advertising sales to more of an advertising marketing role)?

Again, due to the current market no company is paying recruiter fees unless it is at the “C” level. So finding a recruiter that will be of any true help is slim. LinkedIn.com is the best place to look; there are a lot of recruiters on that site. In today’s market, YOU are most likely going to be your best recruiter. Also, there are a ton of marketing/advertising people unemployed  you may be better off staying in sales until the market changes.
