Cynopsis: Classified
Advantage
07/05/11
Good morning – it’s Tuesday, July 5, 2011, and this is your weekly issue of Cynopsis: Classified Advantage!
A couple of weeks ago I saw your article in Cynopsis. I am the boss of a mid-sized company and would like to respond to your list of requests.
First, times are tough and I appreciate your understanding this and yes, I am very grateful that you stuck it out with us and I genuinely hope that you stay once the economy becomes healthy again. But I would like a little gratitude also. I’ve had to make some very hard and serious decisions in the past three years, and one of those decisions was to keep you on. I don’t want applause, just some acknowledgement that you still have your job because of those decisions I made.
Also, I am a firm believer that if there is extra money, it’s yours. I feel you know how to spend your money better than I do, so I won’t hold back money for a company picnic, or movie night at the office.
I would love to give you greater benefits and training, but that costs money, and that’s what we don’t have. We will try to train you the best that we can, but going back to college isn’t in the cards right now.
The discount on our products, done. Good suggestion and effective immediately, all our retail products will be available to you at a significant discount.
More vacation time also sounds like a good idea, I think it helps recharge people and that creates better work from happier workers. Effective immediately, I have changed two personal days to six, four of which can be used for anything, though the other two are to be used for doctors visits and such. Unfortunately, these personal days cannot coincide with existing company holidays.
Gym membership? Unless the health insurance companies give us a break on the premiums, sorry, we can’t do that, too much money.
You want my tickets to the Giants game? No way. I love the Giants and I love going to the games. Besides, I have 200 employees, that’s a lot of tickets, again too much money.
If you want a new title, tell me why you deserve it. If I agree, you got it, along with new business cards.
If you would like to join our cell phone plan on your dime, great, let’s make it happen. But only if we get enough people who would switch to make it worth the paperwork.
If your department wants the company to pay for a working lunch once a month, that is something I can get behind. But with a few rules: no alcohol, I will provide a list of acceptable restaurants and something must be accomplished. If any of these rules are neglected, it’s the end of company paid lunches.
A raffle sounds like a good idea, and I will pay for the prize. It won’t be anything extravagant, but hopefully will be something fun. Once a week for an okay prize or once a month for a much better prize? Employees can decide.
Summer hours, let’s give it a try. I will start a pilot program but if work slips, it stops, immediately.
The best computers go to the people who need them most. Our creatives. If your job requires mainly word processing and emailing, you are the last one to get a new computer. Sorry but computers are expensive.
Twenty minutes a month to meet with me, sorry, do the math. 200 employees? I can’t do it. But what I can do is institute quarterly departmental meetings where all ideas will be listened to, but no promises. I will look forward to these meetings, because every company can use good ideas.
I wish I could give you more, but understand what it is to be the boss. Everyday is a tightrope between employees and owners. My job is not only to run the business as efficiently as possible, but also to try to keep everyone’s morale up. Though not mutually exclusive, it’s close.
Also you must understand that every decision I make, some people are going to be happy, others, not. It’s true with every decision, I don’t like it but it’s part of my job. Your understanding this, is greatly appreciated and remembered by me.
Next Issue: The Grab

Sometimes you think you know how you come across to others but you don’t. You may think you rock in your presentation skills, or present a cool and calm presence or think you are a superstar when it comes to nailing a job interview.
When was the last time you went on a job interview and what was the outcome? I thought so! If you’ve been pounding the pavement and think you are just doing fine networking your butt off then think again. If no one has offered you a job or even given you a second look, chances are you are not the picture perfect job candidate you may think you are.
Maybe it’s time for a lesson or two on how to objectively see yourself as others see you. We all think we know ourselves and we may even play twenty questions in front of the mirror admiring ourselves along the way. But do you really know what others think about you when you have just interviewed for a job? Do you ever ask for feedback and get a nervous response or a noncommittal answer? Do you leave the interview not quite sure what the other person thought or, had the perception you nailed the interview only never to hear back from the recruiter again?
It’s not uncommon for recruiters or hiring managers to dodge the proverbial bullet when offering up feedback particularly if your interview did not go as well as you expected. That doesn’t mean they are a bunch of liars it just means most people, under pressure, don’t necessarily respond with honesty and directness. That’s not a judgment on you or the other person necessarily, but it does place the burden on you to become more self-aware and really understand how you are coming across.
So what is a mock interview and how can it help you polish up your interviewing skills? A mock interview is just that, a fake, role-play exercise where you can practice how you present yourself in front of others. You can do this with another person as the interviewer, or you can do this in front of your laptop and record yourself before you go live in front of your next job interview. Here’s how to set up your mock interview:
1. Pick a comfortable setting like your living room, office, etc. (avoid the bedroom because you don’t want to look too comfortable).
2. Sit in a hard chair so that your back is straight and you have a good angle in front of the laptop, which you will place in front of you.
3. You will have already prepared or have asked someone else to prepare a list of 5-10 questions that you will answer in front of the camera.
4. Remember to wear something you would on an interview and prepare questions that you might be asked on an interview so that you are recreating as close to an actual interview you’ve experienced as possible.
5. If you can invite someone to ask you the questions off screen that’s fine, but you should begin the response to the question by incorporating part of the question in your answer. You can respond something like, “That’s a great question, how do I rate my overall job skills compared to my peers …” In this way, you can follow how you responded to each question when you go back to replay your interview.
6. Now the hard part, ask someone other than yourself to review the mock interview BEFORE you look at it. Choose someone you trust who will give you honest feedback. Write down, or have them write down the specific areas of feedback for each question you answered so you can have this to review when you view your recording.
7. Next, review your recording and have the list of feedback in front of you to go through when you critique each of your responses to the questions asked. The hardest part here is to try to look at yourself objectively.
8. When reviewing your mock interview, try not to focus on the details, if your hair was not in place or you were sitting slanted in the chair. For your first pass, focus on how well or not you verbally responded to the questions.
9. List out your own feedback, such as, did you hesitate often, did you use many “um’s” and “ah’s” when you answered the questions. View how quickly or slowly you spoke and focus on the timing of your responses.
10. Lastly, go back and critique your visual queues, appearance, posture, eye contact, any nervous habit you may not have noticed you had. Write down ALL of your observations so you have a complete list of how well you did and where you might need to improve.
When you complete your mock interview, create a Good/Not So Good list and put your feedback and that of the other person reviewing your recording down so you create a side-by-side comparison. You should wait a few days before you go back and look at your mock interview again with fresh eyes to see if you pick up anything else you may add to your list.
Now that you have an “objective” observation you can critique your interviewing skills and hone up on areas where you may not have performed as well as you once imagined.
It’s not a bad idea to use this to practice on your responses and come up with another list of questions and repeat the same process again in a week to see how well you improved.
Remember that you are the best judge of your how well you come across and represent yourself to others. Next time you go on an interview, you’ll know exactly how someone sees you and whether or not you really “nailed” it.

I sometimes feel like I’m a step behind my colleagues (and possible competitors for a new job) because my alma mater is a small state school that’s not well-known outside my immediate locale. How important is having a “name brand” school on your resume, and when does it stop becoming an issue (i.e. how far into a career)?
There is no secret that having graduated from a well known or Ivy League school does have its advantages when it comes to leveraging your career network, but it really depends on your degree level (BA, BS, Masters, etc) and who you are lucky enough to be interviewing with.
If you are applying for specific positions that require a certain degree level, then yes, the school from which you graduated as well as your academic accomplishments are important assets and should not been seen as an “issue” or impediment to your career advancement.
Many times what makes an interview successful is bonding with the recruiter or hiring manager. This happens when common interests are formed. When you and the recruiter or hiring manager have worked for the same employers, or have mutual professional acquaintances, have volunteered for similar organizations or associations and of course have graduated from the same school (regardless of the locale), all of which can help you make a connection.
It’s important not to feel the pressure because you may or may not possess the competitive advantage over your peers when it comes to your educational background. Remember ALL of your accomplishments whether they be professional, educational or volunteer need to be in your career-tool chest when arming yourself with what it takes to land your next job.
You never know which one of your many accomplishments will make the recruiter take notice. It could be as simple as the Animal Rescue Shelter you volunteered for, or the fact you graduated from East Central College in Ada, Oklahoma.
I have been actively job searching for a while now with very little success. Recently I found a position that is exactly what I want to do. I emailed the company my resume and even hand mailed them my resume personally just to reach out. I know that sounds obsessive, but I really want to work for this company.
Is it too forward to call them to check the status of the position or to at least try and set up an informational tour/interview? I feel even if I don’t get the position, which I hope isn’t the case, that I’d still get to talk with people at the company because I’m really passionate about joining their team and learning more about them.
Finding anyway you can to accomplish your goal of securing a job in one of the toughest job markets in recent history is nothing to feel “obsessive”about. One of the biggest mistakes many job seekers make is that they believe by emailing, phoning and even hand delivering a resume is enough to ensure that the “recruiter” receives it and that they are in the recruitment pipeline. Not the case.
In order to make sure you are noticed and even seriously considered for a position, your need to have exemplary follow-up skills is required. It’s okay to email, call and even show up at the reception desk of the company you want to work for if you think it will work.
However, finding and leveraging all of your contacts will ensure you’ve covered all of your bases. Leveraging your professional network can mean finding someone who works directly for the company who can make an introduction on your behalf to the hiring manager or recruiter.
Locating and establishing internal referrals to help you network within the company is always a smart way to ensure that you get an exploratory or an in-person meeting. Being creative about how you use your network of contacts, whether it be as a referral source or as a direct internal contact will at the very least help you get a foot-in even if you don’t leave with a job offer. In this job market, there is no room for being shy or hesitant-you’ve got to pull out all the stops (short of stalking that is!)
