Cynopsis: Classified Advantage
07.27.10
Good morning – it’s Tuesday, July 27, 2010, and this is your weekly issue of Cyn opsis: Classified Advantage! This edition includes the top job listings in the Television, Media and Ad Agency markets, professional development advice from national experts, your Q & A’s with our experts, and a summary of executive moves among top companies.
What is in your Briefcase the day of the Interview
So today is your interview, you haven’t slept well and you are nervous. Being as prepared as possible will help alleviate some of your anxiety.
Here is a checklist of what you want in your briefcase on the day of your interview.
First, clean out the briefcase. You want to be able to get to anything you might need as quickly as possible.
You want some Kleenex or a handkerchief. God forbid you get an allergy attack or a sneezing fit during an interview, but it could be worse, you could have nothing to sneeze into.
Mints, not gum. Gum is distracting and too difficult to get rid of, but popping a mint into your mouth before your interview might give you some added confidence.
The name of the company and the interviewer. If you do not know how to pronounce either, call ahead and ask. Write it phonetically if necessary.
Address and directions on how to get the building AND directions for the office within the building.
If you call ahead, make note of the receptionist’s name. “Good morning Ms./Mr. Jackson, I have a 10 o’clock appointment with Ms./Mr. Cobble.” You have already set yourself apart.
At least two available places to park if the company does not supply parking. You don’t want to do everything right, only to be late because the parking garage you’re familiar with is full.
Multiple copies of your resume, cover letter, list of references and letters of recommendation.
Your portfolio, if it applies.
Pen and paper. It’s always a good idea to write down key points of an interview, plus it demonstrates good organizational skills and interest.
Business cards.
The job advertisement and any questions you had about it.
Research and write your own summary of the company; what it does, it’s history and any other information you think is relevant. By writing it yourself, you can discuss the company’s background with more confidence.
Have at least five questions you want to ask the interviewer, but make sure the questions determine how you can help the company, not how the company can help you.
By having all these essentials at arm’s length, you can go into your interview with more confidence knowing that you have prepared as best as you can.
Now get in there and knock it out of the park!
Next week: I Can’t Believe You Asked That!
We are always on the look out for more Experts to advise our readers – if you’re a headhunter, job coach, career advisor, etc., and may be interested in contributing to this edition from time to time, please contact me at [email protected] .
Whether we are job seekers targeting employers or biz dev and sales people trying to reach potential clients we are all trying to get our story heard where it counts.
There are so many ways to get the message out, but which method should we use? Many times we choose to use email, but are we using it thoughtfully and effectively? In a 2009 monograph called The Tyranny of Email, John Freeman tells us that the average office worker sends and receives 200 emails a day and this number is rising. Freeman also tells us that in his book The Gift, Lewis Hyde argues that one of the most effective ways to send a message into the world is to wrap it in a form that only it can possess.
OK, OK I hear you. Tell me something doable, you cry! The idea however is provocative. I myself often rant on about the importance of understanding your target. How do they prefer to receive messages? (For me, as an example, it’ s email, on the whole my business phone is for pre-scheduled calls) Where are they likely to be when they get them: reading them at their desk or on their smartphone screen? What do they care about what words in the subject line will make them open it? Will they respond to the first five words of the message or will they just hit next? Will they bother to click the link? Will they download an attachment (and could they even read it on their Blackberry?) So we will think hard about our reader, but Hyde suggests that we also think about the content of our message and what might be the best form to make the communication successful. Think about this too. I am.
And here’ s another thing. According to the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, we misunderstand the tone of emails 50 percent of the time. And for good reason, Freeman says. There is no face on the other end to stop us midsentence to indicate that what we are saying is rude or not comprehended. Yet we learn to interact with the world by seeing and mirroring others. Some of our neurons fire only in response to the actions of others and these are intimately connected with the parts of our brain that allow us understand the world. With email, we have nothing to mirror but our own words hence the importance of our careful visualization of our recipient and our thoughtful wrapping of our message.
So am I telling you not to use email? Absolutely not. But I am most certainly suggesting that you should be very thoughtful when you create one. And the more you know about the person you are writing to, the more effective your email will be.

I just graduated recently and was hired by a company that I interned for while I was a student. During my interview I was asked if I can stay for a minimum of two years. I told them that I had no intention of looking for another job anytime soon, so it wouldn’t be a problem. It has been less than a year, but a friend has recommended me for a job with another company that would have more responsibility along with more pay. Even though I have not actively sought this new job, I feel as though it would be a betrayal on my part to leave my current job without fulfilling the two years. I don’t want to start my new career with any animosity towards me, but I also don’t want to let this opportunity pass by. Is it fair of me take this new job and break my word? And if so, what will be the best way of informing my current employer so that we can stay on good terms?
The first question to ask yourself is: if you were given more responsibility and pay at your current position would you consider staying? If so then there is a clear case for telling your boss that you have had this offer which is really good but would much rather stay where you are, and would she be able to match it.
If you would actually prefer to move, then I believe that you should tell your boss just what the situation is and see how she responds. You should be clear that you know that you have made a commitment to her, and you didn’ t seek this out, but that this is a terrific opportunity and would she consider releasing you from your obligation. In all likelihood she will let you leave, as she will know that you will be not the happiest of campers if you are forced to stay with no improvement in your situation.
This is a fine opportunity for transparency and honesty – always good qualities. And don’ t forget that she could well improve your current situation, as it will probably be more efficient for her than hiring and training someone new.
I worked for 15 years in a job I left 5 years ago. My two immediate supervisors have retired and the only people still there are co-workers. Is it odd that my references for this job are not supervisors and co-workers only? Is there somewhere I can explain that my supervisors are not able to be contacted?
It doesn’ t seem odd to me as you’ ve explained it. I suggest that when you give your references, you mention your supervisors by name, noting that they are not there any more, and pointing out that you have provided other names who can vouch for you. Seems reasonable to me.
I am a soon-to-be college graduate. I have good grades, a great personality, and a hunger to learn. I have participated in countless community service opportunities, extracurricular activities, leadership positions, and internship opportunities. As a graduate, I understand that jobs for me will likely be entry level positions. Most jobs that I have been researching in my desired field require there to at least be 2+ years of experience. Would my internship experience suffice? If not, would you suggest looking for an entry level position not in my desired field (but one that is relevant and a resume builder) to gain some type of experience? Essentially, what type of advice can you give a college graduate when looking for a post-graduation job?
Firstly, your internship experience absolutely counts as experience. I would certainly start by going for the jobs you want and trying to make the case that you will be really good at it if they like you enough they might find a way to bring you on board.
If you have to go for an entry-level position, why would you not look in your desired field? That makes the most sense to me. Find a position where the experience you get will be as relevant as possible to the job of your dreams. Demonstrate that you are really interested in your chosen field and will do anything to get experience at it.
If you just go off and work in an unrelated field, that could well count against you by indicating that you weren’ t that committed to it in the first place. I would note that the case you make for yourself in your question is all about generic qualifications and attributes. Do be specific and precise about how all this adds up to making you the right candidate for the specific gig you are after.
So to sum up if you know the field you are interested in, do anything you can to get any type of position in that field. Show that you care deeply about it and that is what you want to do.
