Hacking into or “jailbreaking” your iPhone used to be something of a legal gray area only hardcore geeks did, as Apple made it clear that futzing around with the OS means that you’re on your own if anything goes wrong. New government rules will now allow iPhone users to “jailbreak” their phones to allow it to run apps not approved by the App Store. The ruling could lead to a new legit black market of apps sold outside of the carefully controlled App Store, which developers have long criticized for its seemingly random and draconian rules. The decision is one of a handful of new exemptions from a 1998 federal law issued by the Library of Congress that spells out similar copyright exemptions for DVDs, computer programs, video games and eBook editions.


Comcast’s G4 network is powering up with four new interconnected anime series next year based on Marvel Comics characters. Produced by Madhouse for Marvel Entertainment and Sony Pictures Entertainment Japan (SPEJ), the shows will feature characters from “Iron Man,” “X-MEN,” “Wolverine” and “Blade,” with interlinked storylines and shared guest characters.
Already in its 16th year of operation, Scripps Networks’ HGTV.com has completed its latest makeover, adopting a new navigation scheme allowing users to browse for content by room or area of the home. (Wave your mouse over the “Rooms” or “Outdoors” tab at the top to access drop down menus and sub menus.) A handy Episode Search guide allows you to search for content among episodes of specific shows, but don’t look for full episodes.
PBS’ multiplatform Sprout network is planting the seeds for its first long-form original series featuring arts, crafts and cooking activities for preschoolers. Premiering Saturday, Sept. 25 at 9 am ET, Noodle and Doodle (26 x 11′) will become part of Sprout’s signature morning block “The Sunny Side Up Show.” A companion website with sharing galleries, how-to videos, games, etc. will be available at SproutOnline.com after Sept. 25.


Sul Set is a new community film site designed to provide filmmakers and other curious souls insight into the film editing and post-production process. Registered users will be able to watch and interact with the editors and filmmakers at work, beginning with live streaming shot during the editing of “Grooming Giselle.”
Hoping to capitalize on the sudden popularity of all things Nordic (this just in: Daniel Craig is playing the journalist in the Hollywood remake of  “Girl With the Dragon Tattoo”), IPTV channel ScandiTV announced plans to launch pay service in the U.S. on Aug. 1. New releases and library titles from Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden will be available to broadband subscribers who buy a $132 set-top box, with monthly programming rates ranging from $18-$22.
Spectra Magazine is a new digital-only Sci-Fi magazine from Pure Square Go and Andrews UK launching on Sept. 1 on a variety of eBook platforms, including the Apple App Store, WH Smiths, Amazon, Kobo, OmniLit and the Android Marketplace. (Subscriptions run $11.99 for 6 issues.) To ensure that writers will have some skin in the game of marketing the issues, the magazine is offering accepted short stories 1.5% of the magazine’s total revenue across all platforms for the first 6 months.

Ad networks: if you can’t beat ’em, join ’em (or rather, form your own).  NBC Universal announced it is pooling together ad inventory from all 21 of its websites to allow advertisers to target audience segments across its network of sites, including NBC.com, USANetwork.com, BravoTV.com and NBCSports.com. Data providers including BlueKai, Nielsen and Quantcast will help advertisers to drill down by demo, behavioral patterns, geographic location and purchase intent. NBCU says the interface will also connect with major holding company trading desks, including Adnetik, Cadreon, Omnicom Trading Desk and VivaKi to streamline the ad buying process. The Universal Audience Platform will include display ad inventory for sites that reach close to a collective 60 million unique users/month.
Glam Media, which built its empire on targeting women, is going after men with the new “BrashSports” vertical, delivering fans, participants, and social fanatics across all sports. Glam has also acquired San Francisco-based men’s sports vertical Sportgenic to help fill out the offering, publisher of sites such as SportsFanLive and Bloguin.


iTV vendor Ensequence announced that shopping channel QVC has selected its services to deliver an interactive TV remote control shopping experience to its customers.


By 2014, the number of US online video viewers who watch full-length episodes online will represent 77% of all internet users thanks to greater availability and technological advances, according to new eMarketer forecasts. But less revenue will come from ads and more from subscription revenue, as services such as Hulu Plus become the norm. UBS estimates that 77% of all online video revenues ($5.4 billion) will come from paid online video by 2012, with the remaining 23% ($1.6 billion) coming from ads.

Apple is rolling out the iPhone 4 in 17 more countries on Friday, July 30, including Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, New Zealand, Singapore, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland. The device’s launch in South Korea, which had been on the list originally, will be delayed as Apple awaits government approval.
Google, which reportedly made a bid to acquire local review site Yelp last year, has introduced a new feature to its Google Maps mobile app allowing users to drag a “Places” icon onto a map when looking for local businesses. Android-powered phones with Google Maps 4.4 will include a new Places app that will pull up local Coffee houses, Bars, Hotels, Attractions, ATMs, and Gas Stations.
Thumbplay, the only major label music service available for all 3 leading smartphone platforms, has updated both its BlackBerry and Android music streaming app to include offline downloads – a feature touted on MOG’s new subscription music service. Thumbplay’s $10/mo. Android app has also added a widget to allow you to control music while accessing other apps. The start-up says the caching feature will also soon be available for the iPhone.
Eighteen-year-old Shawnee State Univ. student Dan Sluzt’s Rhythm is the winner of the “Invent-A-Game Challenge” sponsored by Best Buy, EA Games, the United Inventors Association and By Kids for Kids. Use a megaphone to convert drones back to music loving teens and re-power amps to bring music and color back to the world.

has been upped to President from Group President, Consumer Marketing at Conde Nast as part of a realignment to put more emphasis on digital media. Chuck Townsend remains CEO, reporting to S.I. Newhouse, Jr., Chairman. Louis Cona, currently EVP, Conde Nast Media Group (CNMG), will become Chief Marketing Officer, charged with integrating company’s print, digital, social, e-commerce and consumer insight marketing divisions.


Location-based social networking darling Foursquare isn’t as good at marketing places to new users as it is rewarding loyal customers who were going to patronize their establishment anyway. The same can be said for NBC’s new Fan It affinity program, which rewards fans of shows with prizes and one-of-a-kind perks and privileges the network hopes the winners will brag about via Facebook and Twitter. Users rack up points for watching videos, participating in casual games or tweeting or posting about NBC shows on Facebook, MySpace or Foursquare (in other words, doing all the things they’re already doing anyway.) Prizes include a walk on role in the upcoming new show “The Event,” Red Carpet bleacher seats for the Emmys and various goodies signed by NBC stars. The idea is reminiscent of Microsoft’s “Cashback” program of bribing users to use Microsoft search. The company abandoned the idea after it failed to win over new users.
Clarifications: Kantar Video is not using Anvato’s technology for copyright infringement purposes. Rather, they’re implementing it to better track video assets, with the intent of offering more accurate metrics and insights. Also, Brendan Condon, Calvin Lui, John Marshall and Tom Sipple have joined TagMan’s Board of Advisors, not its Board of Directors.
