The online video company that could do no wrong has finally disappointed investors. Blaming its recent ill-received price hike, Netflix predicted weaker-than-expected revenues for the current quarter, pegged at between $800-$828 million. Customers have already started to drop off after more than 80k customers left less-than-glowing comments on the company’s Facebook page about the price changes. Netflix expects to end the quarter with close to the same number of U.S. subscribers it had at the end of Q2  24.6 million  with 10 million and 75% of all new subs opting for its $8/mo. streaming-only plan. No mention was made about the company’s widely-reported streaming output deal being finalized with DreamWorks Animation.


iOS reading apps from Amazon , Barnes & Noble, Borders and others have officially began the process of updating their apps to remove links to online retail outlets outside the reaches of the App Store, following an edict from Apple. Apple keeps 30% of the proceeds from all digital content sold through its devices and seeks to eliminate circumnavigation of its share.

Music rights licensing firm BMI completed deals with both Spotify and turntable.fm to bring more than 6.5 million covered works to the online music services.

CBSSports.com’s RapidReports service is expanding its coverage to college football campuses, deploying a network of 40 correspondents to ferret out news from the top 40 college football programs. Each writer posts multiple Twitter-like news items each day.


Cloud-based audible Facebook and Twitter posting service ShoutOMatic is now allowing TV networks to embed QR codes within printed media. The idea is to get smartphone users to scan codes found in magazine ads, billboards or even TV shows or commercials to hear personalized audible messages from cast members.


Above-the-fold ads (shown within a browser’s first screen) are seven times more effective at generating click-thrus than ads delivered below-the-fold, according to new research from ad network Casale Media. Its analysis of nearly 2 billion impressions also found that users are much less likely to notice a banner ad after the second ad during a user’s session, but that ads shown five or more times were 12-14-times more effective. Other findings include:

  • Campaigns often suffocate from reduced share of voice on cluttered web pages
  • Ads are ignored when surrounding engaging content like photo galleries
  • Ads may not be seen when displayed on a site that inflates impressions through auto-refresh mechanisms

Video ad network YuMe has signed digital radio service Slacker as a client. Slacker will utilize YuMe’s Ace for Publishers platform to serve video ads across multiple connected devices including iOS, Android and BlackBerry.

Hulu continues to lead in the number of video ads shown, according to ComScore. Hulu featured 1 billion video ads in June reaching 8.6% of the U.S. population, with the average video viewer seeing 38.8 ads. That’s down from May, when it showed 1.3 billion ads to 9.2% of the population. Tremor Media Video Network ranked second overall (and highest among video ad networks) with 753 million ad views, followed by Adap.tv (678 million) and BrightRoll Video Network (629 million). The duration of the average online content video was 5.4 minutes, while the average online video ad was 0.4 minutes.

The NAB released a study yesterday warning that implementation of the FCC’s proposal to reallocate broadcast TV spectrum in order to expand wireless broadband capacity could lead to the demise of at least 210 full-power TV stations in the U.S, including 73 stations within the top ten TV markets. “Northern border” stations in large cities such as Seattle, Detroit and Buffalo could also be at risk, according to the NAB.

Japan became the first Asian nation to make the switch to digital broadcasting, ending 58 years of analog television broadcasts. Less than 300k homes were not equipped for the switchover as of the end of June, according to government statistics.

Portland, OR-based video processing specialist Elemental Technologies and thePlatform have developed a joint solution for the processing and management of large, dynamic video content libraries for delivery to IP-connected devices.


Another survey has been released indicating that the fear of cord cutting may be overblown. Only 8% of U.S. households subscribe to broadband internet services and no multichannel TV service, according to a new report from N.H.-based Leichtman Research Group surveying 1,500 households. And just 5% of this group doesn’t subscribe to a multichannel video service because they can stream shows online. Only 2% specifically mention Netflix as a reason for not subscribing. Some 19% with broadband and no multichannel video service watch online video daily, and 55% weekly, compared to 17% daily, and 48% weekly among those with both. Another 41% with broadband and no multichannel service rate the ability to watch video online as very important in their decision to get broadband , compared to 37% of those with both services.


Hidden HTML5 code of the long awaited Facebook iPad app embedded within Facebook’s latest iPhone app has been uncovered by the folks at TechCrunch. The look, navigation system and menus are re-imagined for the larger screen device.

Microsoft released a new app for the Kinect Xbox 360 controller that enables users to create a personalized Avatar that can virtually hang out with up to 7 friends at a series of “stages” ranging from a late night talk show set in space to a sports tailgate party. Kinect Sparkler, set to launch later this week, enables players to use their fingers to draw sparkling lines that whirl glowing, gold stars in front of, behind, and around 3-D photographs of themselves.

Check out the free Futurama “Head in a Jar Creator” iPhone app , unveiled by Comedy Central during Comic-Con. It allows you to cook up your own heads, Matt Groening-style, and share them via email, Facebook or Twitter. You can choose the species, head, eyes, nose, hair, scene and other extras.


Discovery Communications has tapped former Turner digital executive Guhan Selvaretnam as SVP/ Product, Content and Operations for Discovery Digital Media. Guhan is charged with developing and executing programming and product strategies and assisting with ad sales across all of the company’s digital properties.

Former Comcast SVP of User Experience and Product Design Gerard Kunkel has joined Microsoft‘s Interactive Entertainment Business (IEB) division as Media Strategy Advisor.

Integrated marketing specialist Debra Goetz has been named Gannett‘s next VP/Marketing overseeing brand development, consumer and trade advertising and integrated strategic marketing. She reports to SVP and CMO Maryam Banikarim.

Q.  McElroy has been named Digital Director for Cox Media Group Ohio, made up of three radio stations, four daily newspapers and other information products. She will be responsible for building audience and revenue for all of CMG Ohio’s digital products.

TidalTV hired a trio of new sales staffers: Todd Ralph joins the company’s Detroit office as Sales Director; Chris Robertiello will serve as Account Executive out of Los Angeles; and Mary Gray comes on board as Sales Director, Northwest Region, based out of TidalTV’s San Francisco office.


One of the slickest iPhone apps I’ve stumbled upon in recent months is Tour Wrists from Spark Mobile, a 360-degree virtual tour app that has released its API for free to developers and has already accumulated over 20k scenes from hotels, travel destinations, restaurants, photographers and other businesses. It’s similar to the virtual tour apps you see on real estate company websites, but the photography looks stunning on the iPhone screen and the device’s accelerometer enables you to turn physically around to expand your view instead of clicking on a button. Tour Wrists’ business model includes offering paid extras to enhance businesses’ marketing reach including links to web pages and marketing materials and custom ad spaces distributed to third party tours. CEO and Founder Charles Armstrong sees the platform as the next social platform, doing for panoramic photography what YouTube did for video.
