Cynopsis: Sports

Good morning. It’s Tuesday, July 23, 2013, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.

FOX Sports revealed details for its own take on a college football pregame show on FS1 with FOX College Saturday. The pregame show will run on Saturday mornings from 10a-noon on the newborn channel. Erin Andrews hosts with former college football players Eddie George, Joel Klatt and Petros Papadakis. The series will debut on Saturday, Aug. 31. Gus Johnson and analyst Charles Davis once again serve as the lead play-by-play team for games this season with sideline reporter Kristina Pink. The trio will make their season debut on Sept. 7 with West Virginia/Oklahoma at 7p.

On the broadcast side, college games will be preceded by a 30-minute edition of FOX College Saturday with Rob Stone as host and George and Klatt as analysts. Stone also hosts pregame coverage leading up to Thursday evening games on FOX Sports 1, with analysts Coy Wire and Ryan Nece.

On the Air

ESPN made it official, announcing plans for Nate Silver’s move to the company, along with his website FiveThirtyEight.com. According to the release, the site’s new incarnation will “allow Silver to return to his sports roots while expanding his approach to numerous disciplines, including economics, culture, science and technology, and other topics.” Silver will serve as the editor-in-chief of the site and will add a slew of journalists, editors, analysts and contributors in the coming months with the goal of maintaining an independent brand sensibility and editorial point-of-view. Silver will also be featured on ESPN’s television and other ESPN platforms, as well as on ABC News outlets.

Meanwhile, ESPN’s coverage of the final round of The Open pushed the network to a high score, according to Nielsen Fast National data. The network drew a record-tying 3.1 rating for the live telecast of Sunday’s event with an average of 4,372,000 viewers. The numbers tie the ratings record set in last year’s final round for the highest-rated cable telecast of the tournament and set a cable viewership record for the event, eclipsing last year’s mark of 4,227,000.

The Yankees and Red Sox rivalry always delivers, with weekend games scoring season-high ratings for FOX and ESPN on Saturday and Sunday respectively. FOX drew a 2.5 for a 39% jump over week 16 numbers a year ago while ESPN drew a 2.1 for a 50% spike.

NFL Network is ramping up for the new season, announcing plans for a record live 13 preseason games and 65 overall. The channel will feature Inside Training Camp Live starting tomorrow and running through Tuesday Aug. 6 at 10a with a three-hour Training Camp Today set for 8p. Joining NFL Network’s training camp coverage will be Terrell Davis and LaVar Arrington who will also contribute as analysts Mondays on NFL AM throughout the 2013 NFL season.

CBS Sports Network also takes on the pigskin by launching a series of five college football preview shows, Inside College Football: Summer Special starting tomorrow at 9p. Topics are set to include offseason headlines, predictions for the 2013 season and a countdown of the preseason Top 25. Adam Zucker hosts and is joined by analysts Aaron Taylor, Randy Cross, Adam Archuleta, Brian Jones, Houston Nuttand Ron Zook.

WNBA rookies Brittney Griner, Elena Delle Donne and Skylar Diggins are propelling the league to higher viewership, attendance and merchandise sales, according to the AP. Since moving from college to the pros, household ratings have doubled on ESPN2 compared to 2012 numbers with the three rookies landing the league’s top selling jerseys, with Griner at the top.

NBA TV carries NBA Real Training Camp: USA Basketball today at 3p, offering a live behind-the-scenes look at a full USA Basketball Men’s National Team’s practice. Matt Winer hosts the two-hour special with analyst Dennis Scott and reporter David Aldridge. In addition, the network will spotlight the 2013 USA Basketball Showcase Presented by Nike  the “Blue/White” intra-squad game  on Thursday, July 25at 9p. Kevin Calabro calls the action courtside with analyst Isiah Thomas with Clyde Drexler reporting.
CrossFit, Inc. and ESPN announced that ESPN2 will deliver the first-ever live telecast of the CrossFit Games Finals on July 28 at 7p. In addition, ESPN3 will showcase at least 30 hours of coverage starting Friday to determine which male and female athletes will be named the Fittest on Earth.

NBC, NBC Sports Network, and Universal Sports Network are set to offer more than 24 hours of the Asics World Series of Beach Volleyball from Long Beach starting Thursday. The tournament is the first Federation Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB) sanctioned Grand Slam event with coverage beginning Thursday, July 25 at 8p on NBC Sports Network.

ESPN kicks off the high school football season with a weekend marathon top teams and recruits playing live on ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNEWS, ESPNU or ESPN3 from August 23-25. Twenty-six teams, 13 of which currently hold state championship titles, will compete in the 13 games scheduled for the 2013 ESPN High School Football Kickoff beginning tonight at 7:30p on ESPN3 with a battle of South Carolina teams Gaffney and Northwestern.
