Good morning. It’s Tuesday, July 1, 2008, and this is your first early morning briefing. The current contract expiration came and went at midnight last night while both Screen Actors Guild and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers continue to negotiate. An offer was made by AMPTP to the actors union, which the producers say is “consistent with the four other labor agreements already reached this year … [and] … our offer addresses issues that SAG identified as being of utmost concern to its members, including tailoring our new media framework for SAG in areas such as feature films and significant gains for working actors.” SAG responded that the offer “does not appear to address some key issues important to actors. For example, the impact of foregoing residuals for all made-for-new-media productions is incalculable and would mean the beginning of the end of residuals.” AMPTP and SAG are scheduled to meet again tomorrow, but the producers say they will not accept any counterproposal. Tonight’s Premieres: ~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~
Just after the first episode was shot, NBC ordered seven additional episodes of the half-hour comedy, Kath & Kim produced by Reveille/Universal Media Studios, per THR. The mother-daughter series, starring Molly Shannon and Selma Blair, will launch this fall with 13 episodes ready and production is scheduled to start up again next month. Spike TV bought season one of the unscripted series Real Vice Cops Uncut, produced by Associated Television International. The series was shot on location in Memphis and Orlando and follows local police vice squad members as they capture real-life criminals. The six 30m episodes will premiere August 6 at 10p. After airing on Spike TV, each weekly episode will be available on Spike.com. Three syndicated crime series, Da Vinci’s Inquest, Cold Squad and ReGenesis all distributed in the U.S. by Program Partners, have been renewed for another year and cleared in more than 90% of the country. The new season for all three will premiere this fall. Da Vinci’s Inquest is produced by Haddock Entertainment and Barna-Alper Productions, and ReGenesis is from Shaftesbury Films. Outdoor Channel introduces two new series to its Friday Night Fishing programming block on July 4:

Film actor Tim Roth will star in his first U.S. TV series called Lie to Me, a one-hour drama from Imagine and 20th Century Fox TV. FOX is taking the drama to series with 13 episodes set to debut in early 2009. Tim will play Dr. Cal Lightman, a scientist who invented the field of deception detection where he can read the human face, body and voice to uncover the truth for criminal and private investigations. The science featured in the show is real and based on the research by Dr. Paul Ekman. The pilot will be shot in August with Brian Grazer, David Nevins, Imagine TV President and Sam Baum, writer/creator executive producing. Starring mostly in films throughout his career including the recent Funny Games and The Incredible Hulk, Tim did appear in several British TV dramas early on in his career. AMC and ITV are partnering to remake the late 1960s TV show The Prisoner, into a six-part miniseries with Ian McKellen and Jim Caviezel in two leading roles. The program is slated to air next year. Jason Schwartzman joined HBO‘s comedy pilot Bored to Death in the lead role about an alcoholic writer living in Brooklyn who pretends to be a private investigator, according to THR. This casting appointment lifts the contingency on the project and production begins in New York this September. ~ ELSEWHERE IN CYNOPSIS ~
