Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Tuesday, July 15, 2008, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Blueprint Entertainment gets the go ahead from Teletoon (Canada) to produce a new tween-targeted mixed live-action/animation hybrid series titled Go-Girl (26×30).  Slated to begin production in Canada in late fall 2008 for air in fall 2009, Go-Girl revolves around Becky (15) and her class project that winds up getting her elected as the mayor.  The series will feature a corresponding website that will also feature express their opinions and get involved in making a difference.  Blueprint’s John Morayniss and Frank Saperstein will executive produce the series along with creator Wilson Coneybeare (Timeblazers, Monster Warriors), with Alyse Rosenberg (Braceface, Ready or Not) serving as head writer and showrunner.  The series will be distributed worldwide by Blueprint’s Oasis International.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Napster has partnered with Walt Disney Records to launch a new Best of Disney radio station for kids/tweens/families.  Best of Disney will feature a range of digital music content from Disney TV shows, movies (including Disney/Pixar films), and theatrical cast recordings.  Additionally, Napster subscribers can also create their own playlists, and subs and non subs can buy individual tracks and albums from Napster’s new MP3store.

This fall 2008 Astral Media’s Family Channel will continue to offer Disney Channel programming including the Canadian premiere of The Suite Life on Deck, which follows the misadventures of Zack and Cody as they spend a semester at sea.  The rest of the new 2008-9 season looks like this:

  • New episodes of other Disney series will include season three of Hannah Montana, season two of The Wizards of Waverly Place and a second season of Cory in the House, as well as a behind the scenes version of Camp Rock.
  • Another new Disney series comes in 2009, with the debut of J.O.N.A.S., starring the Jonas Brothers.
  • Original Canadian series for fall include the fourth and final season of Life With Derek, the second season of The Latest Buzz, and the premiere in 2009 of the new series Overruled!
  • This fall on Astral’s preschool channel Playhouse Disney will include the Imagination Movers, followed in early 2009 with Special Agent Oso, featuring the voice of Sean Astin.

MARKETING/LICENSING

As your read this item the sixth book in author Eoin Colfer’s Artemis Fowl series, Artemis Fowl: The Time Paradox, published by Disney-Hyperion Books, will be flying off of bookshelves.  To support the release, Colfer takes to the road here in the US on his multi-city Fairies, Fiends and Flatulence tour today.  Borders stores will simulcast Colfer’s tour at 10 of its stores nationwide this evening of July 15.  The tour features Colfer, a funny and great storyteller, talking about his books, characters and his childhood.  The author starred in a tour of the same name that made its way across the UK in 2006, which coincided with the release of the previous Artemis Fowl book, and a stint on London’s West End.  You can check out a teaser for the show and the book at www.artemisfowl.com .

Penguin Young Readers Group and Walden Media launch a multiplatform promotional campaign to support the eBook release of author Ingrid Law’s young adult novel Savvy, published by Dial Books, which is an imprint of Penguin Young Readers Group.. This week, through July 20, readers can download the entire novel for free at www.penguin.com/savvy/, as well as on sites including AOL’s Be Red, Book Loons, Ally Katzz, Kids Read, Book Divas and Girls Life.  Dial Books initially published savvy in hardcover on May 1, 2008.

VIZ Media teams with Portland Trail Blazer center Greg Oden to promote literacy and the US launch of Japan’s basketball themed manga series titled Slam Dunk (rated T for Teens), which also encourages kids to read.  Created by Takehiko Inoue, Slam Dunk will be released in North America on August 11.  Each volume features a profile of an NBA player (stats, signature game move), with the first volume looking at Cleveland Cavaliers’ LeBron James.  Slam Dunk, the literacy campaign and Oden will be featured at the upcoming 2008 Comic-Con International.  Additionally, another of Inoue’s manga series, titled REAL (rated T+ for Older Teens) about wheelchair basketball releases today.

Cartoon Network Enterprises teams with the National Basketball Association (NBA) to create a joint consumer products and promotional campaign based on Cartoon Network‘s animated series Ben 10: Alien Force.  Set to launch at the 2009 NBA All-Star Game in Phoenix, the youth-targeted products (t-shirts, hoodies, sweatshirts etc.) will feature characters from the series with NBA league and team logos and mascots.  The line will be available initially at the NBA Store inside NBA All-Star Jam Session presented by Adidas and the NBA Store in NYC, a well as at www.nba.com and www.cartoonnetworkshop.com.  The deal builds on the 24-year-long Turner Broadcasting and NBA relationship.

Club Penguin and Disney Interactive Studios will extend the online game play of www.clubpenguin.com with the release Club Penguin: Elite Penguin Force on Nintendo DS for holiday 2008.  Published by Disney Interactive Studios and developed by 1st Playable Productions, the new game is expected to carry an ESRB rating of E for Everyone.

STONE SOUP

Design Squad, the PBS engineering/design competition series, and Intel are partnering with By Kids For Kids (BKFK) to give kids the chance to participate in Trash to Treasure competition, which challenges kids to take everyday discarded or recycled items and repurpose them into useful products into one of three categories: mobility (e.g. moving people); environmental (help protect the environment); play (something kids can play with).  Trash to Treasure launched in April of this year and the deadline has been extended to August 31, 2008, with the winner announced and prizes awarded this December 1.  Check out the competition at www.bkfk.com .
