The competitive back-and-forth between Microsoft and Google continues as Redmond announced that its Google Docs-like, browser-based Office suite would be available for free to users from 2010. (Private beta testing began yesterday.) The software will tie in multiple functions including video editing and new collaboration tools across Word, PowerPoint, Excel, OneNote and Outlook, becoming a lynch pin for multiple Microsoft products and programs. Long a cash cow for Microsoft, giving Office away for free became inevitable after numerous cheap or free alternatives hit the market.
Fox Latin American Channels launched a new online video portal featuring more than 800 hours of premium ad-supported long form content in Spanish and Portuguese. The geo-restricted site, powered by Brightcove, is one of the first premium sites to feature U.S.-based TV programming in Latin American offering full episodes and clips of shows such as 24, Family Guy and Burn Notice from multiple News Corp. properties including 20th Century Fox, Fox, FX and National Geographic.
Comcast‘s authentication software must be coming along nicely if HBO is convinced it is secure. HBO and Cinemax announced it will be contributing some value-added content to Comcast’s On Demand Online trial accessible via Comcast.net and Fancast.com. The package will begin with 750 hours of movies and originals including full-length episodes of True Blood, Hung, Entourage, The Wire, Curb Your Enthusiasm and The Sopranos.
Lifetime Digital announced that daily traffic to myLifetime.com increased by 19% since the launch of its new Project Runway minisite last week. The site features home tours of the show’s designers’ studios, digital portfolios and a sampling of the more than 500 video clips that will posted from the new season, premiering on Lifetime on Aug. 20.
As part of a promotional campaign for season 3 of AMC’s Mad Men, Variety.com has launched a preview of its digital archives service, providing pdf versions of several issues from the years 1960-65. (Ronald Regan is lauded for helping to end a SAG strike on the cover of the April 19, 1960 edition.) The daily is in the process of scanning and digitizing its entire back catalogue and will launch a pay service early next year, searchable by keyword and date.
DIY Network is breaking ground on its third season of Blog Cabin on Aug. 20. Nearly 4 million votes were cast since January to determine the design of the mountainside vacation home.
BBC Two is marking the 20th Anniversary of the founding of the web by producing an “open source” documentary with World Wide Web inventory Sir Tim Berners-Lee. With a working title of Digital Revolution, the project will utilize crowdsourcing techniques to give users early access to rushes, planning and content. The 4-part series, a co-production with Open University, is slated to air next year on BBC Two. Speaking at a BBC-sponsored event called to announce the project, Berners-Lee called for a renewed openness for the web. He said the internet should be “like a white piece of paper,” not be controlled, censored or intercepted by government, media or corporate interests.

Microsoft is pitching its digital ad agency Razorfish to the five major agency groups WPP, Omnicon, Publicis, Interpublic and Dentsu as way to strengthen its relationship and popularize usage of its software and services, per the WSJ. The company is promoting a deal that would include a long-term commitment to utilize Microsoft’s technology, software and advertising assets. One of the last remaining major digital agencies available for acquisition, Razorfish is seen by the holding companies as a way to significantly boost digital revenues.
Following the rapid proliferation of smartphone-based rich media advertising, the IAB released its first-ever Mobile Buyer’s Guide providing a concise overview of the current U.S. mobile advertising market. The primer, which concludes with a handy directory of the IAB Mobile Committee Members who worked on the guide, includes:
- audience breakdown and specific advertising options for reaching those segments
- key definitions in mobile display and messaging campaign metrics
- an overview of how to buy mobile display and messaging campaigns
- an explanation of common short codes and methods for activating mobile campaigns from traditional media campaigns
- a series of examples across different types of mobile advertising executions
MySpace and Fox International Channels struck a multi-territory partnership under which FIC will manage local advertising, marketing, and promotion across a number of territories including Argentina, Brazil, Spain, Italy, Poland, Mexico, and Turkey. MySpace advertising and local sites in Brazil, Argentina, Spain, Italy, Poland, Mexico, and Turkey will remain active through the partnership.
Shares of Netflix increases by over 7% on Monday on rumors that Amazon may purchase the company to shore up its position in digital content distribution. Netflix, which both rents physical DVDs online and streams content to PCs and other devices via the web, is no stranger to such rumors but is no longer a cheap target.
ION Life signed a web-exclusive content deal with How-To video portal Howcast.com to share short form digital videos.
As advertisers and media buyers call for better measurement standards and practices on the web, Nielsen announced that it has dramatically beefed up its web measurement panel – increasing its sample size by more than 8 times. Nielsen says it is now able to report on 30,000+ sites to provide more accurate measurement of individual demographic groups such as Hispanics, cell phone only households, teens, etc. Internet audience measurement data reflecting the new panel is now available with the July 11 “data of record” release of Nielsen’s NetView, VideoCensus, search and online retail measurement services.
Interactive marketing will near $55 billion and represent 21% of all marketing spend by 2014 as marketers shift dollars away from traditional media and toward search marketing, display advertising, email marketing, social media, and mobile marketing, according to a new Forrester Research study.

That was fast. TwitVid, one of the start-ups that provide video services to Twitter users, launched its own iPhone app for the video-enabled 3GS model yesterday. Record and post videos, insert a tweet then instantly post your message to your Twitter account.
Another popular Twitter client, Seesmic, launched a web-based version of the Seesmic desktop application featuring support for many of the same features including the ability to view threaded message conversations in your direct message interface. The start-up also added a couple of new features to the client version, including an improved interface that enables use of the sidebar to toggle between accounts, userlists and searches.
South Korea-based LG Electronics will launch an online app store today initially focusing on the Asian market per Reuters. The company plans to expand it to Europe and South American by year end but has no plans to open it to U.S. users.
Internet TV services provider Move Networks, the company powering the video player in Comcast’s On Demand Online trial, named former President and COO of DirecTV Roxanne Austin as its new President and CEO, effective immediately. Since 2004, Roxanne has been President of Austin Investment Advisors, a private investment and consulting firm focused on new media and technology.
NBCU’s iVillage named Susanna Schrobsdorff, Charlie Rogers and Elizabeth Zack to key posts on its editorial team. Susanna will take the post of Executive Editor; Charlie assumes the role of Managing Editor; and Elizabeth will serve as Editor for iVillage’s Family-themed content. All three will report to Chief Content Executive Angela Matusik, who recently joined iVillage from People.com.

Now trade journalists aren’t the only ones who may feel compelled to get up early on Emmy Nomination day. The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences will stream the 61st Primetime Emmy nominations live on its new consumer-oriented website Emmys.com from 5:40 am. PT on Thursday, July 16. With Emmys.com, designed by digital agency Playground Group and web development firm Metal Toad, the Academy finally has a public destination that can serve as a year-round resource for news, history and fun assets like behind-the-scenes footage at awards shows the group has collected for years. Social media feeds publish updates to Twitter and Facebook and links to Emmys.tv and the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Foundations’ emmytvlegends.com will integrate a wealth of interviews with past legends. The site is the result of the Academy’s conscious decision to go beyond what the alternating networks do each year and take a more hands-on approach to marketing the Emmys itself, according to Brian Seth Hurst, Second vice Chair of the Television Academy Board of Governors and current head of its marketing committee. The Academy also plans to look into streaming the awards themselves after the current broadcast agreement expires in 2010.
