Good Morning, it’s Tuesday, January 9, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing.
MediaCom is not taking it’s battle with Sinclair Broadcast Group lightly. They have re-filed with the FCC, asking the full Commission to take another look at their petition alleging Sinclair has not negotiated in “good faith.” They are also giving out antennas for those living within a 30-mile radius of their local Sinclair station and according to the Des Moines Register, they’ve already run out of the free antenna kits, and are now ordering more. Des Moines is home to Sinclair’s KDSM and viewers in that DMA also watch KGAN/Cedar Rapids.
When MTV‘s Road Rules 2007 returns on January 30th, it has a subtitled – Viewers’ Revenge. This time, MTV viewers will have full and complete control over the game, deciding who ends up in the MTV Online elimination round, and who from the roster of replacements on MTV.com will compete to replace the Road Ruler. The Viewers Revenge Special airs on Jan 23rd at 10p as part of MTV’s Tuesday night lineup.
Starz has picked up the pay TV rights to four theatrical films, according to Variety, all produced and distributed by Bob Yari Productions. In order of appearance, Winter Passing will first become available to Starz in March and stars Zooey Deschanel, Ed Harris and Will Ferrell in a supporting role. Find Me Guilty debuts in the spring and stars Vin Diesel as a mobster defending himself at trial. The Illusionist kicks off this summer, and stars Ed Norton, Jessica Biel and Paul Giametti. Shortcut to Happiness is schedule to be released in theatres later on this year and stars Alec Baldwin (also this marks his directorial debut), Jennifer Love Hewitt, Anthony Hopkins and Kim Cattrall.
Procter & Gamble is launching two social networking websites, designed to provide market research and give the company an upfront view of their consumers preferences, concerns and what they care about most, per today’s Wall Street Journal. The first was launched in late December in association with Yahoo, called Capessa, a forum for women where they can discuss issues of particular interest including health, parenting, fitness, etc. The site is located in the Yahoo Health section. The other site is tied in with P&G’s People’s Choice Awards and is decidedly more Hollywood – celebrity and fan driven. This site launches tomorrow, the morning after the CBS presentation of the People’s Choice Awards (tonight at 9p).
Comedy Central Mobile will launch the South Park Mobile application across multiple mobile carriers this year. Available to subscribers will be streaming video, episode guides from all 10 seasons of South Park, news and blogs, ringtones, wallpapers, message boards, graphics, etc.
Another SecondLife.com update – this time from Sundance Channel. Tonight at 9p the cable net will screen the indy feature film Four Eyed Monsters at 8pm in the Sundance Channel screening room. Thereafter, filmmakers Arin Crumley and Susan Buice will be available for a little Q&A from the audience. More info at www.sundancechannel.com/secondlife.
Comedy Central’s broadband website, comedycentral.com, will launch a slew of new web-based shows this year. Here’s the quick rundown of the 11 new series, which when coupled with current and/or returning series, will give the site a total of 25 original web shows:
- The Watch List features stand-up comedy and sketches based on the acts of some of the funniest Muslim-American comedians. This is the first show by a major media company to feature an exclusive Muslim-American line-up.
- Judge Fudge is a spin-off of the cable network’s animated series Drawn Together. This show show picks up after Judge Fudge partner is killed and he takes the law into his own hands. From the same guys who created/produce the cable series Drawn Together.
- Guacamole is a character-based comedy centered around a tub of Guacamole and his best friend, a can of Minestrone soup. Written and voiced by Michael Blieden and Matt Price.
- Monsters is an animated series about four monsters that all live in the same castle. The series explores how the monsters deal with the real world… and how the real world deals with them. Super Special Dog is an animated series about a canine superhero that is, well … according to Comedy Central, he’s “special”.
- Window Seat, an animated series about a put-upon business traveler and the various weirdos who sit next to him on the plane. From the animation company Radical Axis.
- That’s My Daughter features music videos from the band That’s My Daughter, who fuse comedy with 1980s-era rock ballads. Produced by Matt Schuler and Levity Entertainment.
- Stephen & Steven is from creators Tim Heidecker & Eric Wareheim, an animated show about Siamese twins who are attached at the groin and obsessed with Internet dating.
- Racist Travel Agents is a live-action show starring the world’s most upbeat and excited team of married travel experts, Dixie and Dante Whiskers, who are also racist.
- Crash Course In Comedy is a lesson by lesson stand-up for beginners and viewers at home. Ultimately viewers will be able to submit/upload their own stand-up set.
- Awesome Friends is about a super hero dog & cat team trying to save the world before they kill each other. Created and animated by Wade Randolph.
A&E has six new scripted drama shows in development, all with a decided crime & punishment bent:
- Johnny the Great is about a defense attorney, his far-from-upstanding clientele, and his own far-from-ideal personal life.
- Dry River is based in a well-to-do Texas town. The local sheriff and his son supply the base of the drama – the son being a newly-assigned federal agent assigned to the border town. The project is from Warner Horizon TV.
- Y3 is about a guy who is working as a “temp” at the local police precinct, who also is solving cases before the uniformed cops can. This project comes from Fox TV Studios.
- The Hunt from Apartment 3B Prods focuses on an ex-LAPD cop who is attempting to clear his name after a scandal.
- From Fox TV Studio, an untitled NYPD anti-terrorist project, set in New York City and a secret unit that tracks terrorist cells throughout the US.
- And lastly, an untitled Steven Bochco project, about a happily married couple who run a successful divorce law practice.
‘Tis the season to order pilots, and four broadcast networks have jumped right in:
CBS has ordered up two pilots:
- Skip Tracer from CBS Paramount Network TV stars Stephen Dorff as a charming finder of people in LA’s darker corners
- A US version of the UK musical series Viva Blackpool from BBC Prods, Seeds Prods, Sony Pictures TV and CBS Paramount Network TV. This project has been retitled for the US – now known as Viva Laughlin, about a guy who is opening a casino in Laughlin, Nevada.

- Women’s Murder Club from 20th Century Fox TV, is based on the James Patterson novels. The stories revolve around four women, a medical examiner, a reporter, a detective and a lawyer, who together track down murderers.
Not to be outdone, NBC has also ordered up a couple of pilots:
- Lipstick Jungle from NBC Universal TV Studio, this one may ring a bell as its been around for a while. This story is from the Candace Bushnell novel, and is described as an decidedly edgier Sex and the City, and revolving around women in their 40’s.

Sunday – A18-49 Analysis: With the help of the New York Giants and the Philadelphia Eagles, and even tho they didn’t win, I’d suggest more help from NY than Philly … Fox led by five share points on Sunday night with an overall 7.0/16 A18-49, according to fast affiliate numbers from Nielsen Media Research. ABC was a nearby second with a 4.8/11. At 7p Fox was clearly dominating, posting a dandy 11.0/27 in the A18-49 demo. Nobody else even made it into double digits. At 8p the glow from the Eagles win kept Fox on top with a 5.4/12, with ABC hot on its heels posting a 5.1/11 for EM: Home Edition. The first hour of NBC’s newest competition show, Grease: You’re the One that I want, earned a 4.3/10. Desperate Housewives led at 9p with a 7.3/16, while Fox was #2, and the final half hour of Grease delivered a 4.5/10. The first half hour of the season premiere of The Apprentice at 930 managed a soft 3.6/8. At 10p ABC held it’s lead with a 4.6/11, tho NBC tied in share with a 4.3/11.
