Good morning, it’s Tuesday, January 8, 2008, and this is your first early morning digital briefing, coming to you from the CES convention in Las Vegas.
Yahoo! CEO and “Chief Yahoo” Jerry Yang unveiled two major initiatives brewing at the portal, one currently in beta and one still in the works. Yahoo Go 3.0 represents a major upgrade of the company’s mobile web surfing platform that will improve navigation and interoperability and open up the platform to third party developers. MySpace, MTV News and eBay have already agreed to develop widgets using Yahoo APIs. Further off is an initiative to also open up Yahoo Mail to third-party developers.
Jeopardy! aims to be the first nationally syndicated show to be taped at CES this week as the Sony Pictures Television quiz show gears up to celebrate its 25th anniversary. SPT is constructing a special stage on the show floor where at least ten episodes will be taped before a live audience, including the annual Tournament of Champions show and a special celebrity edition.
SPT also signed an agreement with YouTube to launch a selection of ad-supported channels on the video sharing site, featuring classic TV episodes, outtakes and other goodies. The condensed-format Sony Minisode Network is first up to launch.
CNBC and The New York Times struck a deal to share digital content in the areas of business and technology, including finance, economics, money management and personal finance. CNBC will provide content and multimedia features from CNBC.com to NYTimes.com and The New York Times will provide print and online coverage from the newspaper and its Web site to CNBC.com.
ESPN launched a channel on the wireless and broadband MobiTV platform featuring live simulcast sports events, breaking sports news and mobile-exclusive programming. ESPN Mobile TV also sources content from ESPN staples such as Mike & Mike in the Morning, First Take, Pardon the Interruption, Rome is Burning and Around the Horn .
Verizon Wireless, Warner Bros. Television and Fox have put together an ambitious multiplatform marketing campaign to promote Fox’s Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles. The campaign includes exclusive videos and a mobile game on Verizon’s V CAST service as well as a Terminator microsite on Fox.com. Verizon and Fox will also host a red carpet event at the ArcLight Cinerama Dome in Hollywood on Jan. 9.
CNBC.com launched a new “CES Stocks to Watch” feature profiling 95 companies, the stock prices of which may be affected by news released at this year’s show. The site is also offering extensive CES coverage, including a blog
by The Big Idea host Donny Deutsch.
BusinessWeek.com has launched its new Lifestyle Channel featuring Autos, Real Estate, Travel, Executive Health and Living Well sub-channels.
Multiplatform network BlueHighways TV is now available on the faith-based Sky Angel IPTV service.
A group of impatient investors led by Jana Partners and including Alex Interactive Media, Spark Capital, Velocity Interactive Group are seeking to wrest control of online tech publisher CNET Networks. Citing underperformance, the group plans to nominate 7 new CNET board members and increase the size of CNET board from 8 to 13 seats. CNET issued a statement claiming such a move would violate company bylaws.
A new socially oriented music technology standard called Jook was unveiled at the show yesterday, enabling iPod users to interact with and share playlists & recordings with users of rival MP3 players such as Microsoft’s Zune. Jook is a subsidiary of Carlsbad, Ca.-based Razer.
EchoStar announced plans to counter DirecTV’s HD push by launching three new satellites in 2008 to give it the capacity to offer 100 HD national channels as well as local HD feeds in up to 100 local markets. EchoStar also announced a new partnership with interactive TV developer BIAP to deliver Glassbooth Interactive Political Content to Dish subscribers through the “Dish Decision 2008” election portal, polling subscribers on key issues.
Panasonic unveiled a new portable DVR product that Comcast has signed on to offer to its subscribers, giving cable subscribers portability and media playback capabilities in a single device. The small DVR/DVD player features a 60 GB hard drive, a 8.5″ folding LCD screen and stereo speakers. Panasonic is saying the first units will be ready to roll out in early 2009.
DivX announced an agreement with D-Link to launch an HD Media Player in the U.S., delivering videos, photos, music and other online content from a PC to a home TV. DivX also signed 4 new content partners to its DivX Connected Platform: Veoh Networks, Jaman, Vuze and Next New Networks.
A new custom study by NielsenConnect found that 64.6% of 18-34 year old “technologists”  consumers who define themselves as early adopters  engaged with Sony properties. NielsenConnect combined existing database information from both the National People Meter (NPM) and Local People Meter (LPM) services, website visitation information from Nielsen Online, cellular and wireless information from Claritas’ Convergence Audit and high definition usage and behavior from Nielsen’s HD Study to obtain a comprehensive view of Sony’s reach.
The fastest growing online retail category during the 2007 Holiday Season were video games, consoles & accessories, according to ComScore. Sales jumped 129% vs. the 2006 holiday season, with popular consoles like Nintendo Wii and Sony PlayStation and games like Halo 3 driving sales in the category. The heaviest spending week during the season was the week ending December 16, with $4.7 billion in online sales, edging out the week ending December 9, which saw $4.6 billion.
Former VP of ESPN Digital Media Sales John Zaccario joined GSN as SVP/Advertising Sales. He will oversee advertising sales for all of GSN’s media assets, including its 66-million subscriber television network and its online games portal, GSN.com.
Reality production company Evolution Media (Formerly Evolution Film & Tape) formed a new multiplatform division, promoting Alex Baskin to the newly created position of VP/Development & New Media. He will continue to report directly to President Douglas Ross and be based in the company’s Burbank offices.
David Sheehan has joined the CNN News Services executive team as VP/CNN Content Licensing and Sales. He will oversee CNN ImageSource, CNN Worldwide’s content and stock footage licensing business.
Gary Krakow, formerly of MSNBC.com, has joined TheStreet.com‘s editorial team as Sr. Technology Correspondent. He is filing videocasts from CES.
WCBS-TV upped Dan Shelley to Director of Digital Media, effective immediately. In this new post, Dan will oversee sales and editorial content for WCBSTV.com and the station’s other digital content delivery platforms.
Digital multiplex network .2 Network appointed Lee Leddy as SVP/Network Sales; Marlynda Salas Lecate as VP/Network Sales; and J. Stuart Stringfellow as Network Sales Consultant. The company also announced it would make its first appearance at NATPE this month.
Sweden-based Stardoll named Shant Tutunjian to the position of Integrated Marketing Manager.
Here are a couple of CES blogs for harried show-goers. Boothtruth.com describes itself as the CES Undercover Blog, featuring nuts and bolts advice including transportation tips, free swag pointers, aftershow party tips and hints of where to find free WiFi access. Even NBCU got into the blogging act with its NBCUatCES.com/blog, produced by NBC Agency Manager of Digital Media Jon Accarrino, right from the NBCU booth.
Correction: The Nielsen SoundScan report cited yesterday pegged overall music sales at $1.37 billion. This should have read 1.37 billion units (including almost 845 million digital tracks.) Also the “n” was left off of Engadget.com (although the hyperlink was correct.) We regret the errors.
