Cynopsis: Classified Advantage
01/04/11

Good morning – it’s Tuesday, January 4, 2011, and this is your weekly issue of Cyn opsis: Classified Advantage!

“Some people have a way with words, some people have not way.”  –Steve Martin

As any good comedian knows, the use of words, particular words, is very important.  Word choice can make a joke a dud, or a home run. Not convinced?

I was so ugly when I was born, the doctor slapped my mother.

or

I was so ugly when I was born, the doctor yelled disparaging remarks at my mother.

Same when interviewing, you have to choose your words carefully.

Slang is always a bad idea, dude.  Not industry jargon, but slang.  Anytime I go to a restaurant and the waiter approaches by saying, “What can I get youse guys?”, I cringe and despite my better intentions, I make judgements.  So will interviewers, but they won’t cringe.  It is their job to pick the best people possible for the job.  Using slang will make their job easier, by immediately dismissing you, if not physically, certainly mentally.

Before an interview, (I have mentioned this many times before), record yourself answering questions.  Nobody notices the hmms and errs they themselves say, but everyone listening does.  Work on getting rid of them, practice and then practice some more.  Don’t worry about a little silence after being asked a tough question, it demonstrates that you are thoughtful.

Don’t refer to younger people within the industry as kids, it shows a lack of respect.

Even worse, referring to women co-workers as girls!  It may seem harmless to you, but many interviewers will see you as someone who has a problem working with women, even the babes.  See, even a compliment can come off badly!

Make your statement quantifiable.  “I try my hardest,” sounds like a person who just can’t get the job done.  “My sales have exceeded company expectations for the last four quarters,” is a statement an interviewer is thrilled to hear.  Before an interview, write down all your successes, and then write them again, making each one quantifiable.  Memorize and use them.

Never talk negatively about another company or past co-workers.  No one wants to work with that guy.

While I don’t agree that cursing is the surest sign of a lazy mind, during an interview, it is never, ever appropriate.  Some interviewers, while talking tangentially, might curse. Don’t take the bait.  This can be used as a ruse to determine how you will be communicating with other workers.  Keep it clean.

Stay away from high drama words, like crisis.  Unless it really was “reported on the news” crisis, don’t use it.  Use of such words can leave an impression that you don’t handle tough situations well.  Irregardless, stay away from such words.

Oh yeah, and don’t use made up words like irregardless.  It’s not a word.

Don’t use literally, very popular with younger workers, unless you mean, “literally”.  Unless you were at work for an actual 24 hours in a row, day after day, don’t say you literally worked 24 hours a day on a project.

Crossing the Danube? I have a friend who really thought the saying was, ” I have crossed the Danube,” meaning the point of no return.  If you are going to use a metaphor, (or is it an adage or an idiom? I don’t know so I won’t be using it in any upcoming interviews), make sure you use it properly. By the way David, it’s “Crossing the Rubicon!”

Did you know that incline means a change in slant, either up or down?  Therefore a downward slant can correctly be called an incline?  Neither does the interviewer, so don’t try to educated them on the obscure meaning of a word.  You’ll sound pretentious.

On the other hand, you don’t want to use words incorrectly, so;

nonplussed means utterly perplexed,

bemused means bewildered

plethora means too much of something,

peruse means to read with great care, and

pristine means in its original form, not perfect or unblemished.

Make sure you know how to pronounce the words you are using.  I, myself, once said “hyper-bowl” rather than hyperbole.  I know, embarrassing.

The English language is tough, so my best advice, go with what you know.

Defining Career Goals and Making Choices
by Mary Kate Wedel and Diane Allen

Did you ever wonder what it meant to really be empowered? There are so many perspectives on this topic.  Merriam-Webster defines empowerment as: “to give official authority or legal power; enable; to promote the self-actualization or influence of.”

We often think of empowerment as someone else giving something to us. From this day forward, you can change that perspective.  You can empower yourself. If we wait for others to empower us, we are not in control of our destiny.
Henry Ford once said, “if you think you can or you can’t, you will ALWAYS be right.” Let’s make ourselves believe that we can be empowered in all walks of our lives.  Here are four easy steps:

  • Improve Your Confidence  No matter what the topic, situation, or problem, confidence carries you through.  It is much better to have tried and not succeeded quite the way you wanted, rather than never to have tried at all.  Mistakes are really nothing more than opportunities to learn.
  • Make Decisions  If you are usually the one agreeing to everyone else’s decisions and preferences, ask yourself why you are so willing to agree.  If you find that this doesn’t apply to you, then continue what you are doing, but be careful that you didn’t go too far over the continuum to blatant disregard for others.  Consider those affected by the decisions, but keep yourself centered on what is right for you.
  • Practice Assertiveness  Assertiveness is not aggression, force, dominance, or winning-at-all-costs.  Rather, assertive individuals are able to diplomatically and firmly speak up for themselves. They know their boundaries and set them.  When others overstep their boundaries, they can articulate what happened, and confidently correct the situation.  Most importantly, they do so without guilt.
  • Live By Your Belief System  This is the most important ingredient to achieving true self-empowerment.  These beliefs take many forms.  We can believe in our values, our abilities, and our desire to be happy.  Each person’s beliefs are different, just like our fingerprints.  One thing holds true for all  we must understand our beliefs and live by them.

If you find yourself feeling submissive about something unreasonable, recall these empowerment principles.  They should help keep you balanced and in control of your future.

Questions from our Readers
Answered by Mary Kate Wedel and Diane Allen

Are there any new social sites that businesses are looking at now, more than LinkedIn, Twitter or Facebook?

There are many business oriented networking sites in addition to LinkedIn, Facebook, and Twitter. Before you decide on which sites are best for your goals, consider your brand- personal or professional. Whether you are looking to recruit candidates for your business, seeking another position, or if you are a sales professional, be clear on how you want to be known. Part of building your professional brand is to build a presence so that those with whom you want to connect can find you easily online.

Following are several other business oriented social networking sites to consider:

Networkingforprofessionals.com,was started by a group of professionals who saw the limitations of traditional networking. It is an alternative to building business contacts, quickly and efficiently by combining online networking with face-to-face meetings. There are branches in New York City, Los Angeles, Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Phoenix, Miami, Ft Lauderdale, Dallas, San Antonio, Houston, Philadelphia and Long Island and they continue to add more cities.

Ryze.com is a business social networking site with a special focus on the entrepreneur. Individuals can use Ryze to build a personal network and companies can use Ryze to create a business community. Founded in 2001 it was one of the first social networks.

Talkbiznow is a comprehensive interactive business networking site for business professionals. By displaying how each member is connected to any other member, it visualizes the phenomenon of how a social networking site connects members. This site was launched by co-founder and CEO Martin Warner and Executive Chairman Martin Parker. Warner is also a film producer and angel investor and the founder and Chairman of Cabo Films, an independent motion picture and documentary feature company.

Video resumes seemed to be a big thing for a while and then disappeared. Are they still around and are they useful if your looks are not important to the job?

Contrary to its name, a video resume was not your resume on video – it was a sales pitch to entice the employer to take a look at your “real” resume online. Video resumes were supposed to offer both a time savings and a new dimension to candidate evaluation for employers and recruiters- a new perspective to an old face — the paper resume.  From an HR perspective going through videos took more time.

What we have found, like many new concepts the original purpose of the video resume did not work but video did not disappear- its use is just different. Video is more about the second look than the first look.  If an employer is interested in you they may be checking you on Facebook or LinkedIn.  Having a video may be just the added exposure you need to get yourself an interview.

From an advertising standpoint, faces generate more trust. But bad advertising (poor lighting, strange angles, bad acting) can do more harm than good.   With that said, if you think that a video will contribute to helping you get a job (regardless of your looks) – educate yourself to produce as high a quality video as you can and use it to complement your overall  job search tools.
