1/02/07

Good Morning, it’s Tuesday,  January 2, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing of the New Year!

When 2007 became official at 12:01a Monday, Court TV pulled itself off the DISH Network satellite service due to an issue over rates. No word as of yet, if the network will be reinstated on DISH at a future date.   This statement was provided by Court TV:   “We were unable to reach an agreement with Echostar and, as a result, we had no choice but to discontinue their carriage of Court TV. They were unwilling to pay the standard industry rate for a popular network that is currently ranked in the Top 20. We are disappointed with their decision, and hope that we can reach resolution, but in the meantime, our cable operator partners and DirecTV are able to provide this network to Court TV fans.”

Tonight’s Premiere:
FX:  Dirt at 10p

~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

The syndicated series Judge David Young, from Sony Pictures Television, has added stations owned by Lin, Pegasus, Meredith, Raycom and Grant, taking the clearance mark up to 75% of the country. The series will launch in national syndication for the 2007-2008 season. Clearances to date include Fox O&Os in New York (WNYW/WWOR), Los Angeles (KTTV/KCOP), Chicago (WPWR/WFLD), Dallas (KDFW/KDFI), Washington, DC (WDCA/WTTG), and Houston (KRIV); CBS O&O’s in Philadelphia (KYW/WPSG), San Francisco (KBCW/KPIX), Boston (WBZ/WSBK), Atlanta (WUPA) and Detroit (WWJ/WKBD); and a handful of Sinclair markets including Baltimore (WBFF/WNUV), Raleigh (WLFL/WRDC), Cincinnati (WSTR) and Milwaukee (WVTV/WCGV).

In case you didn’t hear this last week when Cynopsis was on vacation, Bravo has acquired nine episodes of the off-HBO series Taxicab Confessions, and began airing the show last Friday night at 11pm with three back to back episodes.

IFC will premiere a new anime block beginning January 5 with two new series:

  • Gunslinger Girl at 11p – the government is using its Social Welfare Agency as a ruse when in reality it takes little girls, with terminal illnesses, and teaches them to become assassins. Thirteen half-hour episodes.
  • Basilisk at 1130p – a love story between the two young heirs of warring clans in feudal Japan. Twenty-four half-hour episodes.

TV One will debut an eight-episode one-hour series that explores the psyche of black men in Black Men Revealed on January 14 at 10p. During each episode, four guys from different backgrounds will come together and ask each other questions and discuss myths and facts about themselves, along with host and comedian David Arnold. The series is produced for TV One by MacVision, Another Bright Idea Entertainment and King Artist Management.

The perennial syndicated game shows Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy! have been renewed through the 2011-2012 season. So far, the shows have cleared in about a third of the country with stations signing up from ABC, CBS, Post-Newsweek, Hearst-Argyle and Sinclair. When this new deal ends, Wheel of Fortune will have completed 29 seasons and Jeopardy! 28 seasons. Both shows are produced by Sony Pictures Television and distributed domestically by King World Productions, Inc. and internationally by CBS Paramount International Television, both divisions of CBS Television Distribution.

~ PRODUCTION AND DEVELOPMENT ~

ABC has ordered up a pilot based on the film Mr. and Mrs. Smith, about a couple who are both hired assassins.  The film’s director, Doug Liman, is on board to direct the pilot. The film’s writer, Simon Kinberg, has also written the TV script. The project is from Regency TV and Fox TV Studios.

Two projects in the works from writer Josh Safran and Warner Bros TV, per Variety:

  • ABC has ordered a script for a drama about a woman who goes into the family business, which happens to be the Secret Service. This project will be exec produced with McG and Wonderland Sound & Vision.
  • At Fox, Safran has a private eye/adventure drama with a sci-fi twist — two detectives help their clients go back in time to change things they now regret.  Fox has ordered a script.

Casting Call: The producers of Chef Gordon Ramsay’s newest show Kitchen Nightmares are looking for restaurant owners who are in urgent need of some free advice and help from the man himself. Gordon will come to the establishment no matter how big or small the operation and offer his best management secrets and techniques to help turn the business around. And, apparently he won’t be dispensing his trademark fiery language but will be there as a consultant and to support the owners. To be considered, in the text of an email to [email protected], send your full name, restaurant name and location, contact numbers and a description of the situation – the good aspects of the business and the negative, as well as a list of all owners, chefs and the roles of each in the business. Also, mention what type of restaurant it is, its size and specifics on how Gordon can help.

Casting Call: NBC and BBC Worldwide are hosting open casting calls for a new show called Fortune (wt) where average Americans will pitch a panel of wealthy philanthropists for a chance to receive money to fund their dream. The show’s producers are open to any and all requests – funding for inventions, an engagement ring to charitable donations and business start-ups. Interested participants need to have a one-minute story ready and know how much money is needed and explain how it will be life changing. The open casting calls begin this Friday in New York City from 9a to 6p, and in a bulk of other cities as well.  For more information go to www.nbc.com/Casting or contact [email protected] .  Good luck!
