Good morning. It’s Tuesday, January 24, 2012, and this is your weekly issue of Cynopsis: Classified Advantage!
10 Great Answers to 10 Tough Questions
Tell me about yourself.
This can be a disastrous question if you are not prepared, this is where your practiced elevator speech comes into play. But it has to sound spontaneous and unrehearsed, and you can achieve that by rehearsing this a lot.
Why should I hire you?
Tell the interviewer that you are the best person for the job. Then tell them why. This can’t be an unexpected question so tell them you are the best and then back it up with passionate examples. A lot of enthusiasm will serve you well.
What is your long-range objective?
You want to work for a company in a job with every increasing responsibility. This will show ambition and loyalty.
What is your greatest weakness?
Select a true weakness that is not central to the job you are applying for, and explain what actions you have taken to overcome this weakness.
Have you ever had a conflict with a boss and if so, how was it resolved?
Saying no might seem unrealistic, so only say so if it’s really true. Having a conflict with a former boss, isn’t a bad thing, in fact, it’s very natural and often productive in the long run. Why you had a conflict is going to be key issue. When I have been asked this question, I respond, “I understand the boss/employer relationship very well. The boss makes the decisions. I have only had problems with bosses who have crossed into a non-professional areas, and when that has happened, I asked to schedule a meeting with that boss, away from other workers, and then calmly explained why I was troubled by their behavior. This method has always served me well and the problems were solved almost instantly and without hard feelings.”
What type of decisions do you have difficulty making?
This question is usually asked not for a specific answer, but to determine if you are decisive and can make tough choices. One of the best responses is, “deciding between two ideas that seem equally valid.” Follow up with that you met with all those involved, studied the pros and cons together and as a group came to a decision that everyone may not have been completely happy with, but they respected both the result and the process.
Are you a team player?
A simple yes will hurt you. Say yes, if true, and then give specific examples.
What qualities do you feel a successful manager should have?
What you want to stress here is leadership, and someone who has a great sense of the future of the company and its employees.
If you had to live your life over again, what one thing would you change?
This is not the time to bring up any personal mishaps. This question is about how you would better your career. Though I do know one HR manager that was impressed with the response of “If I get this job, then, nothing.”
What would you do with an employee that is constantly late?
This one I learned from actually seeing it happen. A past co-worker of mine was late at least 2-3 times a week. Always between 15-30 minutes. Instead of getting mad, the boss simply put this employee in charge of something that needed to be accomplished first thing in the morning. The boss treated it almost as a promotion. The employee was so pleased, they were never late again. Brilliant.
Every HR employee is different, and what is a great response to one, may leave another unimpressed. Try to get a sense of what is working and what is not. And understand that you have to put your own unique spin on all these responses, but the basic ideas should serve you well.

Whether you are out of work or in a job that makes your life miserable, life can feel pretty uncertain. We never seem to know what will happen next. Uncertainty overload brings stress and confusion, and while most of us would be quick to say that we want less stress and more certainty in our lives, what we really want is less of a stress reaction to what life is throwing our way.
We can’t always choose what happens to us but we can choose our responses to the situations we encounter.Here are five different responses that people have to stressful situations. Think about how you respond and how you might want to consider responding in the future.
1. Be a victim to it – people who respond this way don’t take action. Things happen to them and though they may complain and be generally miserable about it, they don’t do anything about it. This way of responding is certainly not recommended; eventually it takes its toll on one’s physical and mental health.
2. Accept the situation – and get some perspective on it. Someone with this response may say “so what,” or perhaps ask if it will it matter in a year or a week or even in a day.
3. Take steps to change the situation – taking action to bring it to resolution (or at least move toward resolution). This is a very powerful response, and one that many effective leaders employ.
4. Avoid the situation – people responding this way make a decision not to get involved in a situation they don’t see as concerning to them, or upon which they can’t make an impact. For example, someone may choose not to get involved in a dispute going on within their office if it doesn’t directly involve them.
5. Alter your experience of the situation – when we look at a situation differently, the experience itself changes. Changing perceptions is probably the most challenging of the responses, because we tend to be stuck in our own way of looking at the situation, but it is also perhaps the most powerful of all.
Remember, what one person sees as stressful, another person barely notices, or sees as exciting and full of opportunity. It’s your choice!

Is there a good or professional way to ask for a salary advance, or is this a career killer and/or an outdated practice?
The first step would be to contact the HR department and ask if they have a policy for salary advances. If they do not, you need to prepare a proposal in writing describing how you think the salary advance could work to the company’s benefit as well as yours.
I would suggest that you have a solid reason to be asking for a salary advance and clearly specify the amount and timeframe for repayment. While this is not a common practice, there are some companies who would be open to it. However, the best thing is to use this as a last resort, as it is always better to keep your personal financial affairs private.
With the economy still being bad, and understanding that I am lucky to still be employed, but how do I tell my boss that he is giving me just too much to do. I am working 10-14 hours a day and at least three hours a day on Saturday and Sunday. Should I just shut up and be glad that I’m getting a paycheck, or should I bring this matter to his attention?
It is imperative that your boss is aware of the amount of time that is required to do your job. Working this type of schedule will lead to “job burnout” and then both you and your boss lose. I am assuming your job didn’t always take this many hours to complete each week and is probably requiring these hours because others have lost their job and you assumed their responsibilities.
Take the time to put your current responsibilities in writing, detail how much time is dedicated to tasks and include any other relevant support information. Schedule time with your boss and share the document with him/her and ask if they have any suggestions on how to accomplish the work more efficiently in less time or how to get support or assistance. Most people will listen if you are explaining and not complaining.
This can also serve as a way to continue to build your relationship with your boss and to co-create ways in which both you and your boss can work even smarter.

Raycom Media, Inc. bought the assets of New York-based Tupelo-Honey Productions and the deal includes fifty percent of My Tupelo Entertainment. Cary Glotzer will remain as CEO of Tupelo-Honey as well as the Managing Partner of My Tupelo Entertainment which is headed by Partner, Michael Yudin.
A+E Networks elevated Nancy Alpert and Maggie Reilly-Brooks to SVPs/Legal and Business Affairs. Both Nancy and Maggie additionally hold the titles of Deputy General Counsel.

Weigel Broadcasting Co. appointed Maura McDonough Cope as VP of the Me-TV Network. Presently, Maura is the GSM of the Milwaukee-based Weigel stations and starting immediately she will transition to her new position at Me-TV.
