CYNTHIA TURNER’S
Cynopsis

01/24/06

Good morning. It’s Tuesday, January 24, 2006, and this is your first early morning briefing, coming to you from the NATPE Convention in Las Vegas:

Fox will move forward with a new late-night comedy series in the fall called Talk Show with Spike Feresten (working title), airing on Saturday nights from 12-1230a, following MADtv.  This series will employ the traditional elements of a talk show, peppered with irreverent comedy sketches.

*MORE GOOD STUFF*NATPE Updates:

  • 20th has fast-tracked its launch of the English-language telenovela trilogy series Desire, now set to debut this June.  The property has already been sold in 65% of the US, including the Fox O&O station group.  The most recent clearances include KICU/San Francisco, WRBU/St. Louis, WTTV/Indianapolis, WPGH and WDWB/Pittsburgh, WTTE/ Columbus, WLMW/Milwaukee, KVWB/Las Vegas, WTTO/Birmingham, WUXP/Nashville, KRRT/San Antonio, KOCB/Oklahoma City, WRDC/Raleigh and WMMP/Charleston.  Desire is built as a 65-story arc, airing Monday-Friday for 13 weeks, with a weekend encore episode highlighting the previous week’s storyline. 20th plans a minimum of three such story arcs in Desire’s first year.  The show is being sold on a Cash + Barter basis, with 3-1/2 minutes sold for national within each 60m episode.
  • Program Partners has cleared its new Crime Watch block in more than 60% of the US, including several major group clearances as well as the WB 100+ Station Group.  The two-hour block includes Cold Squad and Stone Undercover.
  • Tribune Entertainment‘s American Idol Rewind has been cleared in 65% of the country, including 24 of the top 25 markets, many of the Fox O&O stations, Tribune’s WPIX/NY, WGN/Chicago, KLTA/LA, KCPQ/Seattle and KTXL/Sacramento.  Sinclair stations clearing the weekly series include WGPH/Pittsburgh, WTTE/Columbus and KRRT/San Antonio.  Among the Fox-owned stations carrying the show are WJBK/Detroit, WJW/Cleveland, KMSP/Minneapolis and KSAZ/Phoenix. The show is available on a straight barter basis, airs weekly with a double run, and starts this Fall.
  • Pinnacle Entertainment‘s movie package, Pinnacle Power 2, has been cleared in more than 65% of the country, with a start date of Fall 2006.  Films in this package include Avenging Angelo, Hard Cash, among other.  None of the titles within this package have aired on cable or broadcast TV in the US.
  • As expected, Warner Bros. came out with two announcements – The Tyra Banks Show is back for a second season, based largely on her W18-34 ratings thus far this season.  To date, Tyra has been cleared in 60% of the country. The second is a first run strip series, The Dr. Keith Ablow Show, cleared on the Fox O&O station group, and cleared in 90% of the country.  Dr. Keith provides much of the same insight as King World’s Dr. Phil, but with a different style that Warner Bros. believes will be compelling to viewers.  The show has cleared 47 of the top 50 markets, and will be available for single run.  Both shows are firm go’s for the Fall 2006-07 television season.

Discovery Health Channel has picked up seven more episodes of its forensic science and medical mystery series Skeleton Stories, from producer Atlas Media Corp.  The show originally launched on Discovery Health back in December when it got a 13-episode order.

VH1 will launch a new series in conjunction with Entertainment Weekly called The World Series of Pop Culture, with host Pat Kiernan.  The show is expected to launch this summer and will be a pop culture competition designed for teams on the topics of music, television and film.  If you think this may be right up your alley as a contestant, check out VH1.com.  Auditions will commence next month in five cities.

Showtime Networks has picked up Season #2 of Masters of Horror, produced by IDT Entertainment. Set to debut in the Fall of 2006, the order is for 13 one-hour episodes, and concentrates on the most prominent directors in the horror genre.

TNT Sports will provide mobile phone users access to TNT NBA Thursday via Txtstation TV, a marketing solution for interactive television. Txtstation will be implemented during TNT’s live sports broadcasts. To get a better idea of how the technology will work, plug this into your web browser:
